I doubt it but perhaps they would make an exception? As I've written a few pages back I tried to receive a wire transfer that was poker related funds to an Argentine bank account and it was damn near impossible. This was from moneybookers but I doubt stars would be any different. I'm pretty sure they realize the problems that are in Argentina and have dealt with this before. It wouldn't hurt to ask if they have some other kind of solution.

For quite some time, I had a Stars account registered in the US while I continued to play here in Argentina. Perhaps it's possible to set up your stars account in Uruguay and play here in Argentina? Maybe Montevideo just becomes the next hot poker destination?

If you are a US citizen (which I am) you have very few banking options in Uruguay due to the HIRE act passed March 18, 2010. Most banks will only allow very select customers due to increased complicated functions that the US IRS requires. Almost the only option is banco republica which will allow you to open a temporary savings account and you get a Maestro debit card. However many expats have reported that you need proof of economic activity in Uruguay and residency to open the account. Also I saw others report serious headaches and extensive paperwork that needs to be filed to receive bank transfers even from their own foreign accounts. I don't believe I will call them and ask about their internet gambling policy because a move to Uruguay doesn't appeal to me.

I know it's a bit farther away, but according to heresay, it is remarkably easy for a foreigner to open a bank account in Peru.
At least one bank, Interbank, is known to accept a passport and a tourist visa as the only documentation.
If you can then get an international debit/credit card connected with the account you should be able you withdraw money in BsAs.
The balance can be kept in USD since it is equally accepted as the local currency in Peru.
I don't know if it's possible to facilitate transfers to and from poker sites, or if the poker sites will accept a US player living in Argentina with a Peruvian bank account, but it might be worth looking into it.

i was there right after all of this happened in lima (about a month ago). i tried in more than one branch in 2 major cities, (interbank and banco nacional, and a few others) to open an account there. i had cash, passport, other form of ID, and a local friend with me to help with the language barrier. theyre so cold in regards to trying to help an american open an account they didnt want to even speak with me. . they refuse to deal with american customers in my experience. i read the same cheery story as you on google about walking into an interbank with a passport and walking out in 20min with an acct, but it simply isnt true

I doubt that those who are only moving here because of Black Friday would really like it. They're likely to be people who want to live in the US but for a cheaper price. Just go to Thailand.

A couple poker players passed through here last month and said they are living in Paraguay where it was a piece of cake to get residency and a bank account, and once you have the stuff you don't even need to stay there. I unfortunately have no specific details or independent verification of any of that.

I think we can conclude though unless all that you are looking for is a possible change of address and an IP address change, getting set up here post black friday is not that convenient.

Lived in BA from Jan 2006 until about a year ago playing poker full time but slowly realised it wasn't going anywhere long term. Back in London and a freelance web developer again and much happier.

I was able to re-open my Neteller account about a year ago. They kept insisting that I send a copy of a local ID in addition to my US passport, and up until then I hadn't been able to get one in any country I lived in. But then while living in Berlin I discovered that US citizens can get get a German driver's license pretty easily--about 1/2 the US states have a reciprocal agreement allowing for a straight swap--no written or driving test required. Neteller accepted this as local ID and re-opened my account.

So I would definitely check into getting a local driver's license or other form of ID and see if Neteller is willing to accept it. Maybe some kind of student ID would work as well.

If it's not a problem to get a Moneybookers account as an American in Argentina, then why aren't all you guys down there just using a MB ATM card to solve the cashout problems?

I believe moneybookers doesn't offer an ATM card to Argentina. I've seen a few threads of Argentineans complaining about ways to get money off moneybookers.

Drivers license requires a DNI card here.

Confirmed, MB do not offer their ATM card to customers in Argentina.

So how have you guys been doing cashouts down there?

Understand its not an option for everyone but establishing/buying a business in BA opens up quite a few doors. They want your business/money and make it much easier to open an account and receive x-fers. Trying to verify the second part this week.

Neteller doesn't seem to be an option for Americans unless you can get local (Arg.) ID.

Just checked PS.com and FTP.com and neither of them lists click2pay as a payment/withdrawal method. How have you guys been cashing out from PS and FTP?

In Canada now, have my bank accounts setup along with a MB account. So I'm all set with the banking stuff.

My wife and I are planning on heading to Argentina later this year so I can play poker and she can travel (I can only stay in Canada 6 months). Does anyone know if there's been any problems at the border with people saying they are coming to play poker? I'm going to stay there for 3 months and will likely be flying my two dogs there so I don't really want to say I'm just visiting since it will look pretty suspicious (I was detained in Canada for this). Any thoughts/advice?

I may be wrong, but if you are working, they expect you to have a work visa and if you are studying they expect you to have a study visa. I usually say 'Estoy paseando' or, I'm traveling around casually, I guess would be the best translation. The dog thing would be tricky. You could say you are on a hunting trip... that is really common here. They've never asked me how long I planned on staying and even if they did, it wouldnt matter if you lied. So you could also just say you couldnt find a sitter for your dogs. The vast majority of the time they dont say anything and just stamp your 3 month tourist visa. But I think you should avoid saying 'I am working here' or 'I am studying' here at all cost.

I think the dogs thing won't be a big deal at all if you've never visited Argentina before. they'll be happy to charge you the $140 visa and let you on your way imo.

In the Yahoo Group family there's a group called BANewcomers with over 100 posts about dogs coming and going from Arg to/from foreign countries. Yeah, you must join. Also check out www.baexpats.org.

The hunting idea is going to be sweet if his two dogs happen to be poodles or some other lap dog. Try to do some investigating about this before you bring the dogs. FWIW, it may help to say you are going quail hunting in cordoba. Supposedly it is really good there.
