Moving to Buenos Aires discussion - Page 106 - The Lounge Discussion and Review on Literature, Arts, Culture

Is anyone here interested in going to Rosario for a couple of days? The biggest casino in South America is there, in the Pullman Hotel. I stayed there last year and it is incredibly nice, a legitimate five star hotel. Amazing place. They have poker cash games but I don't know the details. I can get a room for two nights for around $250 total, that would be $125 a person for two nights in a baller five star hotel/casino. Rosario is about four hours from BA. Looking to go February 22 and 23 (Tuesday and Wednesday nights).

If you play one of their tournaments (1500 pesos buyin) you get a room for 2 for 250 pesos/night including breakfast and if you play in the 1pm shift on day 1 you also get free buffet. One of the best offers around imo.

my plan is indeed to learn spanish-- and I've gathered it's a pretty decent place to do that. I'm then going to BA for at least a month.

Noone knows anyone who lives there/studies there/whatever?

Cordobeses and Portenos don't really get along for whatever reason, FYI. you won't really pick up much of an accent or anything in a month, but i wouldn't tell people in Cordoba that you'll be leaving for BsAs. also if you get too used to the way they speak in Cordoba it could be frustrating for you in BA.

Tournaments are every 2 weeks and last 2 days (sat and sun)

There are loads so if you have something else that you are looking for in addition to just getting drunk at it would be helpful. Some suggestions though

If you are just looking for a simple watering hole: Rock n Beer, which is on Las Heras between Uriburu and Azcuenaga.

On Uriburu on the other side of Las Heras is an Irish pub type place. I forgot the name.

There is an ex pat type place called The Spot. I forgot where it was, I'm sure a google search will turn it up though.

What kind of bar? Expat? Club? Sports bar? Upscale? Toooons of good bars in Palermo, less in Recoleta but there are still some

an expat bar would be cool, upscale is fine as long as its not overly dressy (in the mandatory sense). Basically looking for any type of watering hole existing between the spectrum of cocktail lounge and dive bar. a live music venue would be cool too.

Some bar ideas in recoleta:

- The strip near the cemetery on Vincente Lopez
- The Shamrock
- El Alamo
- Casabar
- Miliones
- The Spot

if you're going alone and want to talk to expats, the alamo is probably your best bet. shamrock is busy every night though

hmm..... dunno, good question. However, I can't recall ever seeing it closed on any day that wasn't a holiday. It won't exactly be bumping with people, but is never really is. It's a good place to get drunk.

possible dumb question, but did the Alamo move to a different location at some point? I haven't been there for a long time but on facebook today I saw a link to an article referring to it being located at Paraguay 1175.

edit: actually that looks like someone just got their countries mixed up since the correct address is Uruguay 1175, so nevermind...

Will be living in Buenos Aires for 5 months and want to visit Brazil at some point during this time. I understand that a tourist visa is necessary (for US citizens) before arrival. Only question is: Unsure of travel dates to Brazil during these 5 months and it seems that an itinerary/proof of purchase of tix to Brazil are necessary beforehand in order to get this tourist visa. Is there any way around this? Planning on visiting the Brazilian Embassy in NYC in about a week or two to get this. Any ideas?

When I applied for my visa in Buenos Aires, they gave me a 90 day visa from the date they returned my passport. I've heard, but can't verify, that if you get the visa in the US, they only give you the visa for the days that you list on your travel itinerary.

Yes.... I applied for my visa with a reservation; at that time I didn't actually purchase the tickets. Still, in his situation, I think the best play would be to get the visa here. It should be pretty easy to find on the internet but the place to apply for the visa is on Pelligrini or Cerrito ( one of those streets alongside 9 de Julio) far on the the Recoleta end of the Oblisco.

Personally, I would recommend getting your visa in the US beforehand. The only problem is that you need to enter Brazil within 90 days of the date of issuance to activate it...if you can do that, you have a shot at getting a 5yr visa, which I'm pretty sure they won't give you in BA. Do some research though, because different embassies in the US are more lenient with the 5yr visas. At least this was the case a couple of years ago. I got mine in Los Angeles.

And I used a printed out reservation that I had put on hold for proof of my flights, as well.

yeah, when i did it in BsAs, the BA consulate (on Pellegrini iirc) gave me a 3 month visa the first time. the 2nd time they gave me a 10 year visa. At neither time did they look at my papers in the slightest, nor did they explain anything about what time I'd be given. They don't exactly hide that they are just trying to make Americans do some paperwork -- btw, the websites explaining that paperwork are frequently out of date or wrong -- and pay some money for retribution purposes.

Visa price is whatever the US charges Brazilians, so I think it was like $130 USD.

btw, I love Brazil, but if you weren't planning on going to Brazil, I wouldn't bother doing all the visa work just to go to the Brazilian side of Iguazu.

oh Chairman Wood -- first visa was around 8/09, 10 yr was around 08/10

Re- Brazilian VISAS for Americans, I got mine in Lima, Peru at the Brazilian embassy, took like 5 business days. I'm sure there is one in BsAs that you can go to to get around the whole flight thing.
