Radiohead concert was awesome, got ripped off by 5 fakes from a guy w/ a 96% rating on Mercado Libre though...but found a guy selling real ones outside and the show was definitely worth it - i've seen them before a couple times and it wasn't the best of theirs I've seen but was still great.

At this point it's almost certain that I'll be moving to Buenos Aires sometime around the end of July with one, two, or maybe three others. I'm thinking we'll probably make arrangements for the first month in advance, and once we get there we look around and pick out a permanent place to live. I'm assuming that at that time of year there will not be much difficulty finding something that a) we like (good location, etc) and b) doesn't have any days already booked. Right?

If you're just looking for somewhere for a month, you should be fine. With availability. Find a place in the middle of Palermo then for the next house decide where you want to live.

You should be fine. The crisis has definitely slowed down the rate of tourist visitation, and you'll be in the winter here. That said, I have no recent experience.

Regarding his specialities: He's very strong in all kinds of meats and can do varied styles. He's classically trained, and one could say he's at his best with Mediterranean. However he's been around Latinamerica a lot and has strong local influence too. He won't do Sushi, though: that's his biggest disclaimer.

Wow the police are shamelessly corrupt. It was four of us outside hanging out on a terrace with some moderate music on a monday night around 3AM. Two cops show up at our door.

1k USD fine seems complete BS. Are you sure these were real cops and nothing is missing from your apartment? Were you with them or someone watching them at all times?

Do you think there is a standard noise complaint fine here? Seems hard to believe it exists anywhere in this continent. Did they threaten to arrest you prior to pulling out the ticket pad? I've had a lot of success slow-rolling the cops in the bribe situations, dumbing down my already terrible spanish and making them work for it, frequently ending with "fine, lets go to the station". Sorry to hear about that BS.

That sucks they came in your place and had a look around. When they come back (bc I am sure they will), do all business in front of the house. Don't have any money on you and go along with all their threats of arrest and taking you to the station. I think if yall look like too easy of marks, this could be a completely recurring situation.

If you asked me to make a "worst 10" list about BA, I think the police as an institution takes the first place hands down. I can assure you there's no USD1.000 fine for noise complaints, even when these complaints seem to be taken very "seriously" by the police.

I think imakefrush's advice is pretty solid: the best you can do is not to look as an easy-to-push-around target... though I don't believe they'd have the mental clarity to make a habit of coming after you. I think it's more of a random effect.

Re: River-Boca game - I have been to a number of Boca games and I have a guy who can get tickets for $250 pesos, so if anyone wants to go, PM me for details. I've worked with him a number of times now/ have gone with other poker players before and the guy is 100% legit and will get as many tickets as I ask for. I asked if i could get a discount if I got 10 of them (because I think I know 10 ppl who want to go) and he said in that case he'd sell them for $200 pesos, so I imagine the more I get the less they'll cost.

Also, as far as private cheffing goes, my roommates have been using a private chef and I think I am probably correct in saying he is one of if not the best private chef in Buenos Aires. I'm a former chef who worked in NYC restaurants (he has worked in NYC as a chef for years as well) and he really, really knows his food, cooks great stuff, is fast, clean, and has a huge repertoire. I highly recommend him and you won't find yourself disappointed.

To collect on a $1000 fine... I guarantee they will be back. Most of those guys are making less than that per month. That is probably their combined monthly salary.

I believe at some point in my research I read that Americans can renew their passport via the American embassy in Buenos Aires. Has anyone tried this? Mine expires on Dec 3, 2010 and I'm thinking it would probably be best to just go ahead and renew it before I move.
