Radiohead concert was awesome, got ripped off by 5 fakes from a guy w/ a 96% rating on Mercado Libre though...but found a guy selling real ones outside and the show was definitely worth it - i've seen them before a couple times and it wasn't the best of theirs I've seen but was still great.

At this point it's almost certain that I'll be moving to Buenos Aires sometime around the end of July with one, two, or maybe three others. I'm thinking we'll probably make arrangements for the first month in advance, and once we get there we look around and pick out a permanent place to live. I'm assuming that at that time of year there will not be much difficulty finding something that a) we like (good location, etc) and b) doesn't have any days already booked. Right?

If you're just looking for somewhere for a month, you should be fine. With availability. Find a place in the middle of Palermo then for the next house decide where you want to live.

You should be fine. The crisis has definitely slowed down the rate of tourist visitation, and you'll be in the winter here. That said, I have no recent experience.

Hey all,
Just moved here for a month or two, got a place in San Telmo. Hit me up if you're in the area and wanna grab a beer, I plan on coming to the next organized dinner you guys have. Also, spending ski season somewhere in Arg/Chile if anyone else is into that sort of thing...

I'll be driving to Mar del Plata for the LAPT, probably a few days early, if anyone wants a ride.

Just for a few days, they are doing renovations. Hopefully they don't change too many things around.

Hey guys,

So I have this urge to goto Buenos Aires, currently there are cheap flights from NZ that would see me arrive there on the 14th April and leave on the 20th April. This is somewhat last minute, but what are the logistics of this in terms of accommodation and the like. Anything else that I would need to consider? Visas/Insurance would be no worries

For those interested in soccer and dont make it to sunday on LAPT:

April 19th: Boca Juniors vs River Plate derby at "La Bombonera" rated #1 sport event to attend in the world by a prestigious english newspaper.

There are not window tickets for sale since all the stadium capacity is covered by Boca Juniors's fans season seats. Resellers on Ebay starting at u$300.

Well, I have one seat available since my mate will not attend since is expecting a new born around that date. You will go with me in my car will stay with me for the match and I will drop you by wherever you are staying in buenos aires.

Im selling the ticket for u$250. Pm if interested or if you want to ask anything.

You dont have to pay me until we are on our way to the stadium.

First come, first serve.

Loz,

He'd come to your house and do the shopping (you'd pay for it). Details such as days per week/hours per day/$ per hour are arranged according to what you want him to do: he's flexible in that sense.

Regarding his specialities: He's very strong in all kinds of meats and can do varied styles. He's classically trained, and one could say he's at his best with Mediterranean. However he's been around Latinamerica a lot and has strong local influence too. He won't do Sushi, though: that's his biggest disclaimer.

Wow the police are shamelessly corrupt. It was four of us outside hanging out on a terrace with some moderate music on a monday night around 3AM. Two cops show up at our door.

(translated)
police: there's a lot of noise and dicking around going on here...how many people are here?

me: four, but we can go inside and stay quiet

police: Can we come inside (both cops insta walk by me into our house before I even have time to respond and the both start wandering around the house)

police: biiig fine....can we see your DNI or passport

me: ok

police: this is a problem, too much noise and dicking around

me: (shipping it upstairs to find money because the cop is clearly psyched to screw us over...hand him a 100 pesos and thank him for his service as I insist that it's a donation to support the service)

police: ook, you can make noise on friday and saturday but remember to keep quiet during the week (he hands me my passport and after they leave I look inside and notice there is a receipt for a $950 USD fine w/ my passport number on it)

Question: are they seriously going to attempt to fine me if at no point they even mentioned any details about the fine?

Conclusion: clearly they must have looked around our house and charged an amount that would inspire a bribe scenario because I can't fathom that the standard noise complaint fine is anywhere close to 1k USD when Portenos are on average uber rambunctious.

Wow.. that's messed up... what area?

1k USD fine seems complete BS. Are you sure these were real cops and nothing is missing from your apartment? Were you with them or someone watching them at all times?

Something about that just doesn't seem right.

To anyone out there(or Imakefrush),

Is it too late for me to show up tonight to Turandot, maybe you already made reservations? I arrived in Buenos Aires last week, and am staying in Palermo, so it's real close to me...thanks...

Do you think there is a standard noise complaint fine here? Seems hard to believe it exists anywhere in this continent. Did they threaten to arrest you prior to pulling out the ticket pad? I've had a lot of success slow-rolling the cops in the bribe situations, dumbing down my already terrible spanish and making them work for it, frequently ending with "fine, lets go to the station". Sorry to hear about that BS.

That sucks they came in your place and had a look around. When they come back (bc I am sure they will), do all business in front of the house. Don't have any money on you and go along with all their threats of arrest and taking you to the station. I think if yall look like too easy of marks, this could be a completely recurring situation.

If you asked me to make a "worst 10" list about BA, I think the police as an institution takes the first place hands down. I can assure you there's no USD1.000 fine for noise complaints, even when these complaints seem to be taken very "seriously" by the police.

I think imakefrush's advice is pretty solid: the best you can do is not to look as an easy-to-push-around target... though I don't believe they'd have the mental clarity to make a habit of coming after you. I think it's more of a random effect.

Re: River-Boca game - I have been to a number of Boca games and I have a guy who can get tickets for $250 pesos, so if anyone wants to go, PM me for details. I've worked with him a number of times now/ have gone with other poker players before and the guy is 100% legit and will get as many tickets as I ask for. I asked if i could get a discount if I got 10 of them (because I think I know 10 ppl who want to go) and he said in that case he'd sell them for $200 pesos, so I imagine the more I get the less they'll cost.

Also, as far as private cheffing goes, my roommates have been using a private chef and I think I am probably correct in saying he is one of if not the best private chef in Buenos Aires. I'm a former chef who worked in NYC restaurants (he has worked in NYC as a chef for years as well) and he really, really knows his food, cooks great stuff, is fast, clean, and has a huge repertoire. I highly recommend him and you won't find yourself disappointed.

Anyways if anyone wants details on either of these things PM me.

To collect on a $1000 fine... I guarantee they will be back. Most of those guys are making less than that per month. That is probably their combined monthly salary.

Whoever was trying to sell tickets for $250 USD is either a scammer or insane... $200 pesos seems much better as this is THE BEST matchup (Go River!).

Out of courisity... don't need all the details, but what does the chef cost roughly?

I believe at some point in my research I read that Americans can renew their passport via the American embassy in Buenos Aires. Has anyone tried this? Mine expires on Dec 3, 2010 and I'm thinking it would probably be best to just go ahead and renew it before I move.
