Is Las Canitas actually a different neighborhood than palermo viejo, or are they the same? According ot bytargentina they're the same but I've read that they overlap/different names for same area.

We were actually talking about this tonight at dinner. Las Canitas is technically in Palermo (I'm pretty sure I looked this up a few months ago), but it's not the same as Palermo Viejo. Also, if you asked your average Porteno, my guess is that about half would say that Canitas is in Belgrano. And to be honest, I think the feel of Canitas is more like Belgrano than Palermo.

Geographically Las Cañitas is in Palermo (it's a couple of blocks away from the Hipodromo of Palermo)

Does anybody of you know if its possible to withdraw let's say $1000 with the new Net+ Prepaid NETeller card in cajeros in Buenos Aires? I tried to withdraw small amounts with the old FirstPay card in several banks, but I always got an error message for some reason (and yes, I had money on the account).

2 questions for a high stakes casino player (table games) going to Argentina:

1) How is possible to access large amounts of cash cheaply? Will I have to use credit card cash advances in the casino? I am bringing some cash (maybe $3k) but don't want to bring too much for safety/customs reasons.

Any other ideas? I hear the daily ATM limits are very tiny.

Is there a problem with bringing cash, i.e., not accepted b/c of counterfeiting concerns? I have heard stories that casinos won't take US $100s unless they are crisp and new.

2) What is the best steak in BA, price no object? We are going to Las Lilas one night but wanted other recommendations, too. Thanks. Recommendations for Mendoza also appreciated.

1) You can take out $600US a day (some people can do more) through an atm (in pesos), probably paying somewhere between 3-10% juice. You can't do a bank transfer down here. I say after factoring in the chance of getting robbed, it is still +EV to carry $9,999 on your person. You are not required to declare that amount and they are not going to frisk you or anything.

2) Cabana Las Lilas is good, but it is expensive by American standards. It is literally an expense account restaurant where people think, "F it, I am not paying for it". I guess the single best steak I have consistently gotten here is the medallon de lomo at Soberbia 22. La Brigada and Desnivel in San Telmo cook a decent steak as well imo.

I'm a very low limit player but going to put in a lot of time. What level do I need to be consistently beating to support a comfortable lifestyle in Buenos Aires?

I booked my apartment and will be arriving in about 3 weeks, but am still trying to figure out a few last things.

1. I am not sure which airport I should fly into. I can get flights into BUE or EZE code airports, which one is closer to Palermo Viejo(Thames and Costa Rica), or are they the same? Also, is it best to just take a cab to my place(and if so, how much should it run me)?

2. Do the DVD players in BsAs play DVDs from the US(region 1) or should I bring an xbox if I want to watch them on a tv?

3. Anyone take any jiu-jitsu/boxing/MMA classes here? I found a couple gyms online but if anyone can personally recommend one I will go with that.

4. Should I bring a 2nd camera in case something happens to one, or should I just deal with that problem if it comes up?

My girlfriend and finally have our tickets and a place to stay for a little more than a month (in Las Canitas near an area recommended by a porteno). We're going to see how we like the area and either stay there or find some other neighborhood for the rest of our stay (up to about a year).

Here's a nerdy question I can't find the answer to anywhere -- Is there much of a dietary supplement industry in Argentina? Do they have local places like the ubiquitous GNCs that are in the US. I do consulting for the industry and no one seems really know much about it that I've asked.... plus I'd like to buy some protein if I get the urge.
