I just can't imagine you'd find workable internet that far south. The idea crossed my mind many times while I was traveling in Patagonia to just stay, but it's really not an option for an online professional.

seriously? you can get decent internet connections just fine in Bariloche and have been able to for years.

San Carlos de Bariloche is in a stunningly beautiful location -- BUT it is a very small city (town, by most standards). Yes there is high speed internet and there has been for years. The food is great (northern patagonia is known for its farming). There are breweries and wineries in the area.

It's very different than Buenos Aires (and a considerable distance away). It's right on the border with Chile - - so connecting through Santiago de Chile is an option. If you are the outdoorsy sort -- you'd love it. You can do everything from glacier hiking to skiing to riding to Chile by horseback.

Just left BA, but plan to come back for a few months this fall. Wondering if anyone has put in substantial hours of live play at Madero? Am coming back to learn Spanish, but wouldn't mind grinding out some $$. Was wondering if, considering the high rake, the games are profitable. I am a solid winner at live 2/5 in Florida over a couple thousand hours. Also, they have a 2.5/5 dollar game. anyone know how that works, payout-wise? Thanks in advance.

I've only played a couple of times in Madero but I know how the games run there, also I've happened to grind some 2/5 games on Florida so I know what your standards are. Players are bad of course but games might be quite a bit harder than your average Gulfstream or Magic city game. Still beatable of course even with the criminal rake but I'd definitely do something else with my time if I were you like play online or just chill

Anybody going to LAPT Punta del Este? What kinda cash games will they run? How much money to brind and how to get it there?

I may be going to BA for a few months at the end of the year. Looking at AirBNB rentals in Palermo area and they seem cheap enough ($500-900/month depending on how nice it is). Any advice/tips? Sounds like bringing cash and exchanging on the street is better than withdrawing pesos from the ATM. Would be attending spanish classes most weeks and possibly working on learning dancing and would like a decent gym nearby. I know there are a lot of parks in Palermo which is also a plus.

Please never withdraw for ATMs, using your credit card is equally bad.

I haven't dealt with Spanish lessons or dancing lessons in a long time. There is a facebook group that called "Buenos Aires Expat Hub" that has a lot of helpful information nowadays. I'd recommend asking to join that group. I'm imagine that they get those questions a lot and might already have a list of teachers for both things. Also, I'm sure they can point you in the direction of some vetted money changers.

Palermo is big, but most places within what is deemed Palermo should put you fairly close to a "decent gym nearby" and "a lot of parks." If you post some of the AirBnB options (or just give nearest cross streets) that you are considering, we'd be able to tell you how close you would be to those things that you need.

Hey, I am considering going to Argentina for a month or so and I wanted to ask a bunch of questions that I'm sure have probably been answered here before but I wanted a more updated answer, so:

1) What city would you recommend to somebody staying there? BsAs is good ?
2) What levels of criminality are there in Argentina in general ?
3) Is online poker legal and is it easy to find a stable connection to play from ?
4) Would it be easy for someone to stay in an apartment for a month or do I
have to stay in hotels the whole time?
5) Am I going to be automatically accepted in or would I have any problem at the
border if they ask me what I do and I tell them that I am a professional poker
player?
6) Is it easy to move around the city meet new people and have a nice time
without speaking Spanish ?
7) Is the poker community large there? Would there be people to meet from
the online poker community to chill and hang out with ?
8) Are the locals kind and caring or do they try to take advantage of tourists?

2) Depends where you are. Buenos Aires is safer than other places.

5) You'll have to pay a reciprocity fee I think, like 120 usd. Don't say you play poker but they won't care honestly.

when i was in argentina i felt like literally everyone smoked cigarettes, but according to this they're barely above the US in cig consumption/person.

I can't speak to BA, but the # of smokers seems waaaay higher in Europe than USA even though the chart disagrees.

I guess it's possible that those who smoke in the USA tend to be a pack/day or higher while it is much more moderate in other countries.

hey im going to argentina for a while and was planning on buying a monitor over there. i was thinking i could find a 21 or 23 inches for not too much$ but i checked a couple of spanish buenos aires website and most of the nice monitors were 1500 pesos or higher (which is 215$ Canadian, which is not a good deal even here). anyone can help me ?

I got two 23" monitors delivered through mercadolibre, 3k pesos each, delivery next day, pay at the door.

Had no onward flight when I came down from JFK and was no problem.

Maybe try to bring a bunch of goods down here that can be sold for a lot more due to import taxes etc(think iphones, laptops, cameras). There is a "Buenos Aires Expat Hub" group on facebook which I found very helpfull to setup here.
