I think you can renew your visa at migraciones in Retiro every 6 months, thus subbing out every other Colonia(or somewhere else obv) trip with a visit to migraciones. Price is about the same as the fastest ferry(I paid 300 ARS at migraciones), but if you show up when they open it'll be pretty quick and save you a couple of hours.
I did that for 1½ years and had no problem at neither migraciones nor at the border control in the Buquebus terminal.

I also overstayed my visa by 3-4 months before leaving, and had to pay 300 ARS in EZE, which caused no problems at all. I haven't been back, so I don't know if that'll come back and bite me in the ass, but the guy in EZE made it seem like the whole thing was no big deal.

Re: argie banking.

Just out of curiosity. Are there any good reasons for having an argentine bank account besides being from US and wanting to play on euro sites?

Also, for whoever talked about staying for 3 years. I've heard people talk about needing a DNI/permanent visa thing in order to open a bank account. I'm not entirely sure, but I think you can initiate the residency proces after one year in Argentina, and after you've obtained the DNI you can stay for as long as you want, so that might be a good option for you. I'm sure dealing with argie bureaucracy is a pain in the ass, but it might be worthwhile if only for the cheaper airfare! A bit of googling will help you out for sure since every BA expat forum on the net have discussions about DNI/residency

Bank fees? I know I pay 2 or 3% to visa and 16 pesos to the banks here when I withdraw money from my US account.

bring the max cash u can before coming here w/o reporting it at customs! Like 10K usd if u plan to stay longterm, that will get u a long way already..

That's weird. I never paid any fees to the argie banks when using my visa in ATMs. I did pay my bank back home(Scandinavia) around 20 pesos each transaction, but when I bitched about it they just waived them which I thought was pretty normal.
I have no idea if I got screwed on the exchange rates compared to wiring money to an argie bank and then withdrawing, though.

open a Schwab checking account. They don't charge any fees and refund the fees the other banks charge to use their ATMs.

Apparently they started charging the entrance fee at AEP now as well. I don't think they are charging it if you take the ferry across from Uruguay yet but flying into MVD and taking the boat across would be a pain in the neck anyways. I don't know about the other airports outside of Buenos Aires.

Thing is, its really hard getting money in/out of poker sites with bank accounts, so here in argentina i use neteller (moneybookers is good too), having a bank acct is pretty useless imo

Argentina has restrictions to get USD OUT of the country (you will never/rarely have problems getting money in unless is an absurd amount that can be tagged as suspicious) so having money outside the country and just getting in what you actually use to live is by far your best option, if you are planning to invest here is a diff thing.

The best shot at playing on eurosites here is just using neteller/moneybookers and getting the card to withdraw/use as prepaid credit card.

Regarding visa, it depends on your actual country of origin so i recommend going thru this web

Goverment stuff is pretty flexible here, i woulnt go crazy on visa requierements since they dont go after illegal imigrants here as they do in most of your countries, and since most european/USA ppl are seen as tourist theres hardly any problems with them

Most people don't go to towns, they go to middle sized cities in "la costa": Mar del Plata, Villa Gesell, Pinamar, Miramar, etc.

La Cabrera is also good but more touristic and you'll have to make reservations for evening dinners. IF you go with 5+ at least a week in advance (that's how it was last year)
