Hey everyone, I came back from BA to the US a month ago.

My old Spanish teacher is looking for some new Students. She's really good (read: young, attractive) and a great teacher. She also really helped me navigate the city and figure **** out when I first got to BA. Send me a message if you're interested.

Brendan

Number one rule of doing business in Argentina:

Don't to business with Argentines.

What would you like to do?

It's not as it's been said. Actually, I feel kind of offended for the generalization. There are honest and dishonest people in Argentina as in every other nation.

I agree with you Spike, and I think the case has been overstated here, but expectations for business will probably be different between an American and an Argentina, for example. And since going into business with someone is sometimes compared to marrying them, you can see why it might not be a bad idea.

Also, it's not just expectations. The whole idea of "the customer is always (or even frequently) right" doesn't really exist here so the expat might get very frustrated letting a Porteno handle certain aspects of a business.

As a native I can assure you that doing business in Argentina is one of those areas where "idiosyncratic" is used as an eufemism.

you started a panaderia, right? if you're willing to write about that and also elaborate on the above, i think it'd be a welcome addition to this thread. at this point, we've pretty much killed 95% of the other topics, and if one more person asks how much Spanish they'll need in BA, we should ask El Diablo to close the thread.

OK I should clarify.

Nothing wrong with Argentines per se, but doing business in Argentina, under the Argentine system with all the inherent bureaucracy and corruption, as a foreigner is an effing nightmare.

Try getting a bank account here without a DNI, it'll give you an idea of what's coming...

I was playing with the idea of opening a coffee shop or a bakery of some sort.
However this would be in the future as I have yet to master Spanish...

I come from Sweden, not the US, if that makes any difference (in getting visa etc maybe ?)

Argentina is probably not a country you should think 'oh, wouldn't it be fun to open a business somewhere exotic!'.

what countries are like that, though? I mean, if countries were business friendly, they would probably already be a developed nation. There are exceptions of course, but even those you could probably argue about.

Opening a business as an expart is not impossible. For example, California Burrito Company was started by a couple Americans like 6 years ago who came down here to travel for awhile and missed Chipotle. They've now got at least 3 branches (Soho, Dot, and downtown) and I've heard (reliable, I know, but it was a friend of theirs) that they were making 10k USD a month when they only had the original store. And to be honest, I think CBC's burritos suck. Maybe CBC has softened up the market for a real burrito company. I'd certainly eat there every day

You should try the burritos from Kussi. I eat them all the time. Never tried CBC so I can't compare.

Not really, I know people who have started businesses in Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia and Czech republic and I haven't heard the stories like you do here. There's lots of western countries with notoriously bad buearocracy.

I'm not saying it can't be done or people don't do it successfully, just not the place where you think "i might move here and start a business!".

CBC just opened a branch a couple blocks from there, you should check it out.

I've never heard of Kussi, I'll give it a try soon.
