"vibe" is pretty subjective and obviously not everyone will share your opinion of that... but from objective standards, it's old and decayed and located immediately adjacent to some of the worst parts of the city

This is correct. Nowadays it's more of a touristic stop than anything else.

Level of fluency required = enough to order food and talk to girls in bars/clubs.

I've kind of heard both things - on one hand, people saying that they wish they learned more spanish before they went there, but on the other, people saying that you should just learn the very basics then go out there and do a ton of lessons and talk to everybody you can.
Any views on this?

To order food you need to know the regional food vocabulary and not much else, and no amount of practice you do now is going to get you to the point where you can carry any conversation with someone that goes much deeper than "hi how are you, where are you from, how old are you?" But obviously, the more practice you do, the better off you will be in various spots that might come up. It's not like there's any specific point at which it suddenly becomes "enough".

Either way I'm going to do a couple hours a day of lessons once I'm there, I'm just not sure if I should be doing 1 pimsleur lesson a day until I go(may 1st), or just cram and do 3 a day to finish all 90.

Stop worrying so much sir! Most of your spanish, you'll pick up here during the first weeks of your stay. Keep working on your spanish but don't rush things. U'll do fine with a good knowledge of english and it's not hard at all to pick up spanish if you try.

yeah, i agree. I live here now and it's sweet. It has an original scene, great food, architecture, and it's cheaper.

i think for some people san telmo would be the place to live, but for someone coming here for the first time, I would never recommend San Telmo as the first place. That's why folks in this thread always say people should get their first apartment for just a month or two.

I don't see why you would want to live in san telmo when you could live in recoleta or palermo. Especially as a poker player who shouldn't be that short of cash. Its not that expensive to live here anyway compared to where most of us are coming from.

Having ribs on summer for lunch isn't the best idea.
