I might be getting a place in B.A. with a few other HU regs in March/April. There will be anywhere from 3-5 of us and we are looking for apartments and have a few questions.

What is the best area to live (I know Palermo/Recoleta, any others)?
What can we expect to pay per month per person for a short term lease?
How should we go about booking it? Should we wait until after we arrive and can check it out? Can we pay a 2+2er in B.A. to go scope it out and make sure everything works?

Also is it at all necessary to get a building with security? How common is this?

This is all for now but if you have any wisdom you want to bestow (or if there is a BA faq posted somewhere) we would really appreciate it.

Yeah me and one other guy I know are going, that I know of.

I found our place on www.compartodepto.com Look under "Busco una habitacion" Its pretty useful as you can see pictures / etc. You can search by neighborhood, Villa Crespo, Belgrano and Nunez are nicer neighborhoods I think as well. Though before you commit you may just want to get a hostel for a few days until you can scope them out in person as some blocks can be iffy and how much can you trust pictures? Per person about 1000-1200 pesos month rent is normal I think. If you find one address specifically I can try and help though I'm no expert. By the way, I highly recommend living near China Town in Beglrano... it is a good hub for transit to anywhere else plus the best grocery stores are there (only place I've found peanut butter).

I don't agree w bahdawg..He is a local and sees things different. I suppose you guys are young and all wanna have a good time, go out a lot and be close to a ton of good restaurants. If so then there is only one choice IMO and that is Palermo. (soho/hollywood). Recoleta is also nice, but it's a bit further from the action/party scene. U'll have to take a ton of cabs..

The areas that bahdawg names are nice indeed, but i would never recommend anyone to rent something there w/o first being in BA for a while.

A 3br place, count on 1K usd minimum per person. Again bahdawg is wrong, he is stating argentines prices. Also the website he gave u guys is for room sharing more so then for finding an appartment. U'll have to lease from real estate sites who charge that much cuz there i sno other way for foreigners and they know it..Only argentines can rent directly from argentines (non-real estate agents.. (not exactly true but they mostly don't do shortleasing + u need document that u cannot get as foreigner for longer term leases). Payments are normally always upfront in USD + 1 month warranty also upfront ldo. I'd suggest choosing a place for a month and then look for a possible better one if necesary once you're here. Or gamble and lease immediatly for all months u gonna be here.

Building w security is not necesary if u live in any of the good neighbourhoods..

I think you def should read all this topic, u'll read the view of at least 5 different people on all your questions. Then decide. If u too lazy to read all, then read all posts from after december, been good discussion about best locations and all that

also fyi, around end march/start april there are a bunch of players here that pbb will be looking for a place as well of which are at least 2 hu players (incl me)

1k USD/person seems ridiculous...are you sure this is right? All of the sites i've been to have listed 3 BRs in the 1500 - 3000 range, with the 3000 range being ridiculously sick.

Check the prices on the websites i posted. I don't know anyone here (except for me since i don't pay through real estate agency) who pays less then 1K usd for a 1bedroom place. I mean u might find smth in the 700-1K usd range but do you rly wanna spend your time in a dump of 30m², 4 walls and random furniture stuffed in it ?? Btw, this is all assuming that you rent from one of those sites and not through craigslist or a tier person u might know.

1k a month for sharing a 3 bed is too much...you can get a very nice place for $2k for sure

Wow thanks for the advice guys. I hate when people drop in on threads like this and ask the "standard" questions that seem to get asked every 2 pages but the search feature wasn't doing much for me and neither were the last few pages. I'll go back and read from December to here.

@estoys, that's awesome that you'll be coming down in April. I'd love to meet up with some other players (especially HU) and it seems like there is a really cool community down there.

I been here for 4 months already..staying till end of June. Many HU players here atm. U gonna like it.

What's the best way to get there from BA? You guys playing any sats too of just the ME?

Just ME for me anyway. We will prob fly though only aerolineas has flights. Only other way I know of is buquebus ferry to montevideo and bus from there to punta

Ferry : colonia express to colonia (1 hour) and then bus to montevideo (2.5-3.5 hours) and then to Punta del este might be the cheapest.

buquebus has direct to montevideo (3.5 hrs- 4) which is more expensive but a little faster. You still have to bus to punta. Cant remember maybe an 1.5 hours more.


I would investigate flights if you are worried about time. Christ, they may even be cheaper. I've seen some deals if you book in advance. I think there are flights direct to punta or to montevideo and then you can take a bus. Aerolineas, LAN and the others are where to check. I also have see ads for "Pluna" around town. There are a few others but I'm drunk now and can't remember. I would do a general search and try to scope out what airlines have direct here to punta de este.

You can fly roundtrip on Pluna from Aeroparque to Montevideo for as little as $65 (but you also have to pay an airport tax which I think was $17 to leave Montevideo). Although that was only searching for some random dates; I don't know specifically which ones you need.

Yeah fly (out of Aeroparque) if you can. Next best option is ferry to Colonia and a 4.5 hour (I think) bus (all through Buquebus). When I took the ferry to Montevideo, I had to get a cab from the port to the bus station and then find a bus to Punta, quite a hassle.

I found a travel agent. Where I cant really remember and booked the ferry plus bus all the way to punta.

When the ferry got to montevideo and you clear customs theres a bus waiting outside and it takes you straight there.

am i the only one who's been underwhelmed by Osaka the last couple times I've been there?

I just went there last night (my first time to Osaka) and comparing it to a lot of other top sushi places I've been to in the US I think 'underwhelmed' would be a fair way to characterize it. Granted, we just asked them to do an all sushi-chef's choice (since it didn't seem that they had a formal Omakase option) and we got a couple of super generic, low-risk dishes like tempura shrimp roll w cream cheese and salmon over the top. The flounder tiradito and ceviches I was extremely impressed with though. If I go back I think I would prob just order all tiradito/ceviche and dessert.

edit: I had the Quara Reserva Torrontes (150 pesos i think?) which was by far the best bottle of white I've had since I've been in BA and my favorite wine overall so far.

The one time I went to Osaka, I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Had a seat up at the sushi bar and my friend knew the chef (her sister works there). 10/10, everything was perfect and I didn't even like sushi before this.
