1) High paying job
You haven't gotten to the chapter on frontier economies in B-school yet? Also, the economy in Argentina is probably going to get shellacked hard in the not too distant future. The worldwide economy is super saturated with experienced out of work people looking for high paying finance/consulting jobs, consider yourself very fortunate if you can get a job making six figures in the states.

2) Cost of living
A) Real estate
This is wildly dependent on where you live. Ten minute cab ride from Palermo and you can be in a middle class/relatively safe neighborhood that is well under half the rent (granted it's going to be kind of far from good nightlife). The short term rental market is huge in Palermo and Recoleta, also very targeted at foreigners, hence the price inflation. Since everything is short term, the price is going to vary a lot depending on how long you are staying and how nice the furnishings/building is. Just peruse some rental sites and craigslist and you'll get a good idea. Tough to find bargains that aren't skimping on the furnishings. Remember that the cheaper/sketchier agencies are probably more likely to try to own you on the security deposit.

B) going out
Again, very dependent on where you go out. A beer might be 4 dollars in Puerto Madero, 2-3 in Palermo, and 1-2 in San Telmo. Much harder to spend a lot on dinner than in most US cities...a decent restaurant will be 10-15 dollars for an entree.

C) Groceries
Not a huge bargain unless you're going to be preparing your own food from basic ingredients. Name brand products can cost just as much if not more than the states.

As long as we're on that topic... how efficient is the pricing on the vacation rentals? I'm kind of assuming that since these things are targeted at foreigners who have to book remotely, and there's not much repeat business, that owners are just going to charge whatever they can get away with, and a more expensive price tag won't necessarily indicate that the apartment is any better than other options. Am I right about this? From browsing around I've encountered some apartments that are much cheaper than most others nearby and have considerably more floor space (supposedly). I keep debating about whether I should assume there is something wrong with these places to make the price so low, or if perhaps the owners are just offering a good price to try to improve the occupancy rate and I would be getting a good deal.

thats what happened to us in cordoba. prices were very differently with no obvious reason showing. one agent showed us a place for 2500, when we returned the key the very same apartment was advertised in the window for 2000. then they let us wait for another appartment, said it was sure, didnt work out, showed us others, when we agreed on one they said now we also have to pay +50% of the rent as comission, and that this is normal in argentina(which obviously isnt)

so were gonna invest some good time looking for places in buenos aires. also they said that there is no way to negotiate the price, which is the first time i encountered this after having traveled so much in central/south america, or is this supposed to be the first round of (very very tough) negotiating?

@ Fatking: real estate agents are a real piece of work here in BA. I hate them almost as much as I hate the police, and I always get my soul owned by them, even being a local. If you have the right personality, stand up for yourself, 'cause they'll usually be FOS... just think that they're trained to con locals, who are in turn trained to spot con artists.

In this economic environment I think walking about is a powerful negotiation. There should be more property on the market than ever, so I'd just be patient and wait for someone trying to offload out of desperation.

Every apartment I have ever found there has been through craigslist. Whenever possible try and cut the agencies out as they take a huge cut on most rentals (around $200-300 per month in some cases on a $1000 rental).

I rock climb and do a little non-technical alpine stuff when it presents itself to me. It's very flat over here in BA. I believe there is rock climbing in Mar del Plata, but there are no mountains around BA that I know of. I am presently looking for a climbing gym in the city, if you want I can let you know of what I find.

Mendoza is near Anaconcagua, the largest mountain outside the Himalayas. Santiago is on the other side of the amazing Andes, offering some good choices for climbers I believe. Its going into winter, I don't know how many things go this time of year with regards to avalanches and weather conditions.

I'm planning on spending winter in the Andes skiing, not sure where yet. I hope you get some other, better responses...I'm interested as well.

does anyone have a tip how to get a cheap one way flight from buenos aires to europe? my secon option would be to look for a round trip, meaning i return in like 4-5 months to BA, but i would really prefer the one way ticket.

I've been looking for flights from Europe to BA, and the cheapest I've been able to find is $1400 for a return flight from London or Madrid to BA, one-way flights from London or Madrid to BA are ~$1000. That's the best I've been able to find.

Yeah, it looks like one-way has become a huge sucker's bet. About a month ago I couldn't find anything < $1000 to Europe. But when I tried out some multi-leg options, I was able to get BA--Madrid, Stockholm--NYC, Miami--BA all for $1450. I guess the moral is if you KNOW you have to be somewhere else (besides your primary destination) in the next six month, just add that on to your one-way since you are basically freerolling.

What sites/airlines did you use to find those prices?

I want to go from Copenhagen(Europe) -> BA, BA -> Las Vegas, Las Vegas -> Copenhagen over a ~9 months timespan but I was unable to find any cheap options. Vegas to CPH was pretty cheap, but I couldn't find any cheap flights from BA - LV, so I'll end up paying something like 1k for CPH-BA, 1k for BA-LV and ~500 for LV-CPH.

Came to BA on Friday thinking I would find an apartment after I arrived rather than book something unseen. However, I find myself paralyzed by the myriad choices as well as my fear of being taken advantage of as I was in my last adventure by an agency in Mexico. So, I find myself booking yet another day at the hotel.
