Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2 Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

The creepy lady definitely worked - and they kind of used it (deliberately or not) again in Woman In Black.

Also the kids jumping out of cupboards and scuttling away was creepy too.

Yeah, the movie had a great eerie feel to it.

Trouble with the Curve (2012): the anti-thesis to Moneyball, and also the anti-movie. Clint needs to stop these shenanigans and get back to talking at chairs.

Cosmopolis (2012): really bad, like really really bad. Pattinson is a terrible actor.

Unrelated note: is Sinister worth watching?
Havent seen it yet but some horror critics i really respect had it on their best of list this year

New short film by David Lynch

^Nice... I have been buying Lynch's music lately, very cool HEADY stuff, specially since a lot of it can be purchased on LP in addition to CD.

Just saw Lincoln and loved it. Best movie I've seen in years.

I just can not look at this and not laugh...

Saw Amour and loved it for the lead performances alone. Can someone talk briefly about a few of the recurring elements in the film?

Spoiler:
-The break-in. The couple is introduced while inspecting an attempted break-in, and later Georges has that dream where an unknown stranger rings the doorbell and then attacks him when he investigates. Are these just precursors to the police break-in from the beginning of the movie?
-The pigeon. I took this as Georges desire to be free of having to care for Anne. Is that all there is to it?

Finally, is the timing of the final scene clear? I assumed when Eva walks in, it was after the police had already broken in and discovered Anne. Otherwise, she would have noticed the door taped shut. Correct?

I thought Sinister was much better than Insidious. I was disappointed in the ending but it seems like most horror films these days have awful endings. If you saw the trailer and think it looks good, it's definitely worth a watch.

I recently saw Lincoln & I didn't read anything about it before hand.....I like to go into movies with as little knowledge of them as possible.

I was really tired the day I saw it so wasn't as focused as usual.....but obviously, DDL is one h_ll of an actor. I believe the entire movie basically just covered one month in Lincolns life.

I'm curious if people liked that decision. And if they did, was it the one month that they would have chosen? I liked the movie quite a bit & if I see it again on all cylinders, I think I may even like it more.

I haven't seen this but I did see it very briefly discussed somewhere.....maybe on the "Charlie Rose" show.

I think I may have heard that part of this movie deals with some of the brutal truths of old age......what it does to the mind & body especially in some of the most egrigious ways.

Is that part of the movie?

Watched The Kids Are All Right last night. I'd give it a B- I guess. It's one of those hollywood-esque movies that you can just sit back, relax, have a few laughs and enjoy with the gf or wife. The acting was ok and the script had some fun stuff imo, nothing new obv but still fun.

On a side note, I watched someother movie that had Mark Ruffalo and Julliane Moore, and I gotta say Ruffalo does much better as supporting character rather than a lead.

Mainstream critics are quite, quite terrible at judging horror movies though.

Compliance - this movie was very disturbing. I had to stop watching it and then restart again. I think one of the most upsetting parts was the prank caller on the phone and how he was tormenting all of the other characters in the fast food store and enjoying it. His absolute lack of compassion was mind-boggling. I'm still conflicted as to how to feel about the manager, Sandra.
Spoiler:
That ending scene where she's being interviewed, sees the video footage from the store, and still cannot face how complicit she was in the whole ordeal is hard. I can't quite empathize with her but yet I can't quite dislike her either.

Tsotsi

This is an amazing movie that follows the life of Tsotsi, who is initially a seemingly soulless thug, as he slowly rediscovers his humanity and "decency" through an accidental act of criminality that involves a new born baby.

Decency is at the core of this movie, and it can clearly be seen in every tracking shot of Davids(Tsotsi's) face as he begins to notice Decency in the minute details of everyday life and in small acts of kindness that live out life in a nasty shanty town of south Africa.

saw Defendor recently, very similar to Kick-Ass. Felt a little long at times but it was decent. Definitely watch it if you've seen Kick-Ass and enjoyed it.

The House of Mirth is quite excellent, and I'm not particularly fond of the costume drama genre. I watched it twice! I'm surprised Gillian Anderson didn't have much of a movie career given how good she is in this movie. 9/10

Reality Bites bites. 3/10

Super is another one like this and is also quite enjoyable. Stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Kevin Bacon and Liv Tyler. Mentally ill man befriends teenage girl and takes justice into his own hands.

Hah, I thought Defendor was this, so I was actually recommending Super

It's a lot darker, almost disturbing here and there.

I liked parts of it, but wish they had chosen a tone. I think it would have been a lot better if they had skipped the dark humor they were going for and just made it sad and disturbing and unpleasant.

But that's just me.

I understand how the film is a "Milgram Experiment" type study on how people are unnaturally obedient towards authority figures, even in the face of absurd orders. And it's quite effective in showing that; however, the filmmakers have also made a conscious decision to cast the very attractive Brea Walker as the victim, making the audience complicit in her humiliation and shame, as you can't help but be titillated by her youthful nudity.

Well, at least, I couldn't help it.

Interesting.
Just watched this. Yikes. Great acting tho.
