The original IS a masterpiece

My film watching in theaters has dramatically increased since I quit my job and started targeting $5 Tuesdays.

I actually prefer the remake to the original... its a bit more accessible for me personally.

Overall, it's not a bad movie, but I wouldn't shell out your $12 to go see it either.

I do, too

I've seen both Solari and preferred the old one. It was more interesting to me. I neither hated nor loved either of them though.

I'm a big fan of Stanislaw Lem, and a big fan of the original but I prefer the second film. I think it better reflects the book, plus I think it is visually stunning. I've never understood the dislike for it, but a lot of people just don't seem to like it.

On the subject of Soderbergh, Side Effects doesn't get the attention it deserves, but it's a very smart, interesting thriller that I plug here from time to time.

I felt like it was two different movies, with the first movie being far more interesting. Once they started doing all the double-crosses and twists, it sort of fell off the rails for me. But that first half had me fully engrossed.

I liked Side Effects, too. I also quite liked Haywirw and Contagion.

Can't wait... seeing the iMax version of Ghost in the Shell tomorrow.
Let's see how badly they messed this Comic up... I mean beyond Scarlett Johansson.

I think Scarlet will be alright. I am more saddened by the lack of a Kenji Kawai soundtrack.

I see no point in remaking this sci-fi classic as a live-action affair, but if it's got Scar Jo in a bodysuit in imax, go ahead and take my money.

I thought he did a new one for the new movie...

He did... as far as the main theme. But the song has been reworked.

Side Effects

It was one of those movies I felt coerced to go see because nothing else at the time seemed to be any good and it appeared to have the most potential overall. It turned out to be an enjoyable viewing experience.

As for Arrival. I don't get the love. It really seemed weak to me and Jeremy Renner was near useless and the supporting cast was at B level If I'm being generous. The relationship between the leads was empty and uneventful. The special effects were actually pretty lame for this day and age. Give me Close Encounters of The Third Kind (1977) ahead of Arrival anytime. And I do love Amy Adams. But I love her much more in something like American Hustle.

I should carry on with that post and mention that Close Encounters of the Third Kind starred Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr and was written and directed by Steven Spielberg. 1970's sci-fi baby!

soderbergh: the limey.
underrated!

second: side effects.
dont second: haywire.

edit: tell him im coming! tell him im fxxx coming!

My pick for 1972 in another thread is Solaris. I also really like the remake, but the original is quite something. Perhaps it has to do with the pace of the original--slow and hypnotic--which elevates it slightly above the remake.

I thought that was just for the trailer but i could be wrong.

In any case, if there isnt a long dialogue less cityscape montage scene then i will likely be disappointed.

Patriots Day was pretty good.

Why Him sucks. I was done in 15 minutes but gave it 30 minutes and still not even close to a laugh.

why him was ****ing terrible.

A reworked version of the song is there at some point in the movie... but it isnt the main prologue type that you are expecting.

Scarlett does an amazing job of bring the character to life... and fanboi IS NOT going to be disappointed.

Frankly, I loved the movie... its very nearly the same movie as the original anime, but delivered much more concisely without the typical Masamune Shirow need to explain ever little piece of minutia thru extremely dry dialogue.

The story is slightly different in many ways... for instance, I have been bothered by the fact that none of the trailers used the Majors name... Kusanagi. That one very important issue for me is very cleanly explained in one of the final scenes... and explained in a very touching and befitting manner.

The movie is extreme beautiful to look at and pays a strong rightful homage to the bladerunner influence.

Importantly, all of the Iconic Anime scenes are in the movie... and they look spectacular.

I am definitely going to see the movie again, but I can see how this film might have issues with wider audiences that might not know the original work... it can be a little dry, and the story is fairly complex for a "comic book" type film.

What is most striking to me was the strong disconnect between the Americanized superhero/comic book movie and this VERY Japanese type adult story. This is more of a grown up Science Fiction than a comic book movie.

This is a strong must see if you have any interest in Anime or Science Fiction.
