Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Personal Shopper Oh so French, slow, meandering, sometimes creepy, gratuitous nudity and masturbation. Kristen Stewart was very good but wish the movie was more coherent.

If anyone could explain what was going on in the Crowne Plaza hotel scene, that would be great.

Malcolm X and Bamboozled (both Spike Lee) - Take the white righteous anger you're not sure what to do with after seeing Get Out and see these!

Bamboozled is at the very least uncomfortably thought-provoking. If you passed on it because it got negative reviews, give it a look.

I had never heard of Get Out so I just watched the trailer. I don't know how misleading it was, but I'm wondering how the GF didn't know how ****ed up her parents and their town were.

I must be the only one who actually liked Vince V in Hacksaw Ridge... In my opinion he was the most interesting character in the movie.

I watched a hard arsed gunnery find his own humanity as he watched a private Doss exhibit his... and he exhibited this metamorphosis without some hokey monologue... he did it with his eyes as he witnessed a commitment to an ideology and the exhibition of battlefield greatness well beyond his own military commitment.

I also felt that graphically the battle scenes were quite good... a ballet of carnage, although it was quite out of proportion to reality.

Overall, I didn't have any lasting feeling or connection with this movie... while not forgettable, the movie just didnt do it for me beyond the Vince Vaughn character.

I never understood the dislike for Bamboozled. It came out, played for a week, then disappeared. I thought it was great; I thought it was Spike Lee's greatest flick; I thought it was going to singlehandedly revive the musical -- but this is the first time I've seen it mentioned since it came out.

Viggo Mortenson is once again excellent in Captain Fantastic, a movie portraying the livelihood of a single father raising 5 kids while trying to cope with the recent death of his wife. Of course, it does not exactly make things easier that the family has totally renounced society and lives in the heart of the bush

I was reluctant to watch this movie for some reason, but am sure glad I did
Pretty darn good show. I saw a lot of myself in Viggo's character, and that's... not great.

Kong: Skull Island

A competent showcase of the beast we've come to know quite well. Not quite as compelling as some other entries into the canon (notably the original and the one with Naomi Watts recently), but still quite enjoyable.

The movie begins with the obligatory "how do we get to the island" situation, which includes getting financing, rounding up your typical cast of misfit characters, and going through some environmental hurdles (a permanent hurricane).

Once we get there, we don't have to wait too long before we see the beast. There's a nice touch of showing a helicopter in the same shot as a dragonfly, showing just how small these characters are on this mythical island, and then Kong shows up, and he doesn't disappoint. The helicopter battle sequence is probably the best of the half a dozen or so action sequences, and Kong is treated as more than just a boneheaded ape, which was refreshing.

After the initial attack, the middle of the movie dragged just a bit as we are introduced to the rest of the gigantic animals on this planet, a tribal village, a John C Reilly role that was clearly written for him and only him, and plenty of running for their lives moments. The final showdown between Kong and the whatever you call them is well choreographed, but probably forgettable.

The rest of the cast, while they are big names, are there solely for a paycheck and so the film can market this movie a little better. Samuel L Jackson plays a typical SLJ role, Goodman is mostly wasted, as is Brie Larson.

We have a setup for many sequels which I'll gladly plunk down the 15 bucks to watch Kong thrash around for a couple hours. There are definitely worse ways to spend my money than to invest in a ticket to this adventure.

Never seen Malcolm X but I did like Bamboozled. Maybe I missed something but it never made my white anger bubble up.

My 3 year old boy is really into Star Wars, we are going through his bad guy faze, Darth Vader, then Kylo Ren, now Darth Maul. We only watch the final 20 minutes of Episode 1 but man, what a pile of crap that movie is, and that is just from the final 20 minutes. Got too cute with their technology and it's animation with some human actors.

Get Out was a clever concept and incredibly funny throughout. If I have to judge it as a horror movie it falls a bit, because even scenes that were intended to be creepy or intense come across as pretty funny. As horror comedy or a parody, though, its excellent.

I may be a huge wimp but

Spoiler:
I thought the scene where Walter is running at him outside the house on the first night, and the scene where the mother makes him sink into the sunken place were legitimately chilling.

The new Chips movie wasn't that bad,had a few decent laffs and didn't go on too long.
But see it at a discount matinee, and keep your expectations low.
Not the worst thing you could see for a comedy right now.

Finally saw Wild last night - very good.

What inspires someone to go watch something like Chips in the theater? Or The 21 Jump Street, or Get Smart or Starsky and Hutch or any of those old TV properties that are loosely recycled into action comedies? I understand why they're made and branded that way, just not what gets people out to the theater to see them.

I guess some parents nostalgic for the originals take their kids with them.

I don't necessarily want to see old tv shows as movies, but as a comedy and time waster, why not?
