Makes me feel good about my decision to skip Boyhood. Just seems like a pointless gimmick. OMG, boy actor grows up onscreen! Like DJ on Roseanne!

GROWING UP BEFORE OUR EYES, WHAT A FILMAKING ACHIEVEMENT

are any of the animated batman movies good?
talking like batman: the killing joke etc

if any are worth watching would appreciate some recs.
thanks.

fwiw I've never liked superhero movies (aside from nolan's trilogy) so looking for something a lil deeper than just standard superhero stuff.

Killing Joke is not as good as it could be, cos they cheaped out on the animation.

The Dark Knight Returns part 1+2 is elite. 10/10 for me.

Gotham Knight is interesting and worth a watch - kind of like Batman meets the animatrix

I loved under the red hood.

If you're going to watch the animated movies I highly recommend watching fatman on batman too.

Watching?

I used to listen to the podcast. The one with Mark Hamill was amazing. Is it a show now?

Yeah I guess the ones for any of the animated films would just be in podcast still, but he has a youtube channel that reviews just about anything and everything:

I enjoyed Under the Red Hood and I remember hearing good things about Mask of the Phantasm.

But I want to echo the praise for The Dark Knight Returns. It's the soundtrack that makes it for me.

I think that's because he's a child!

How many children have you encountered that are interesting to your adult mind?

It is about the experience of growing up and the often relatively mundane, yet significant events that shape our life.

I loved Boyhood but it seems v polarizing. I think it is a lot less about the children's specific stories and a lot more about putting yourself in their shoes and seeing an adult world from a child's perspective and understanding how their mind struggles to reconcile this.

It made me consider my childhood and the various childhoods other people have had and how that determines the person you become. I really enjoyed that.

Felt like Malick's Tree of Life did a much better job of capturing the essence of boyhood than Boyhood did.

It's almost like taste/opinions on movies is subjective. Or something crazy like that.

Radical concept I know.

The Baumbach talk earlier got me to watch While We're Young, which I don't think I'd ever even heard about before. It was ok, seemed to work quite a bit better than Mistress America which was a big mess. Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, and Adam Driver were all very good, some interesting ideas about youth, aging, and achievement bandied about. Also the great old Wings song Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five was used, so awesome.

I enjoyed while we were young tho the last ~15-20mins kindv lost its way.
seemed like they tried to hard to find a plot.

also, while taste is obv subjective ppl can still have bad taste.

Actually its a "greatest movie character" of all time draft. It should be fun and the since it covers every movie character ever the pool is near unlimited. I know we all love to talk about the movies and characters we love and this is a great vehicle for that conversation.

So hit the link and sign up! Be there or be square I hope to get it started early next week.

ya I wasn't saying we were literally drafting movies, just that we are doing a draft having to do with movies so all the bitches ITT that can't be bothered to look at new threads can stop being lame and go sign up.

If the character I have in my head doesn't end up top five I'm going full trump on you people.

This might be a well, duh thing to say, but this is really film noir. I never thought about it that way before.

So many hilarious things, but Goodman being so angry all the time just cracks me up.
I had the same experience. It is an unusual film. It doesn't really make sense to me why I found it so underwhelming on first viewing, or why I love it more with each repeat viewing. Each time, I look back on my previous self and wonder how on earth I could not have loved the movie as much as I do this time.

RBK my friend my buddy,

There are several great animated Batman movies. Some of these are multiple part stories from one or both of the animated series that function as standalone films.

The Batman/Superman Movie: World's Finest
This is formed from a crossover event of the Batman and Superman animated series.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox
Not exactly a Batman movie, but he plays a pivotal role, and it is an amazing different take on the character.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Though it's not nearly as in depth as Batman Begins, this is one hell of an origin story for Batman.

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
You do not need to have seen the animated series for Batman or Batman Beyond to appreciate this movie. It is set far in the future when Batman is an old man who has trained someone new to take over the role of Batman. The Joker died long ago...so how do they explain the return of the Prince of Crime?

Knight Time (Superman the Animated Series, season 3 episode 2)
Superman learns that the Dark Knight has been missing from Gotham for some time now. Superman finds Robin, who has been battling all the crime in Batman’s absence, such as Batman rogues Bane, The Mad Hatter, and The Riddler. Disguised as Batman, Superman helps Robin investigate why his partner has disappeared.

The Call (Batman Beyond, season 3 episode 11 and 12)
Superman drafts Batman Beyond into the Justice League when he suspects there is a traitor among them. Despite Bruce's warning not to join, Terry goes against it and soon discovers a conspiracy against the League.

Manchester by the Sea really connected with me. So sad.

Didn't like seeing the girl from Moonrise Kingdom all grown up.

John Wick 2 - decent but not up to the first one, sadly....still great fun, tho. B

The Witch - great atmosphere and acting, but I have a problem with religion, so I couldn't help thinking to myself these idiot Pilgrims deserve a witch in their lives some. B

The Monster - interesting film with Zoe Kazan as a young mom on a car trip through the back woods with her estranged daughter...and then they get stranded in the middle of nowhere with a monster with HUGE teeth. Not too shabby. B-
