I am not completely anti-Spielberg... Just mostly.

------------

I also remember the scene when The Exorcist Came out... and not being allowed to go see it because of the disturbing nature of the film. I think I saw my first 8mm porno before I saw the exorcist...

They're showing Road to Morocco now, I'm loving this. Bob Hope is a true comic genius.

If it is, they missed the point I was making, I'm no big Spielberg sucker, but I recognize his ability to convey a story, whether I like it is another thing.

The way films changed from Jaws being filmed the way it was, as opposed to how it was intended, just struck me as interesting, Spielberg changed what he originally wanted in the film, and it made it more successful, he readily admits that, and he mentions how it changed his career.
He owes alot of his success to a broken shark.

Gave him final say on most of his movies, got many of them made in the first place.

So to just assume I was bagging on his ability, is not the point.

He could still have been successful, but maybe more as a TV director, or as an action director, much like Michael Bay, who actually worked for him.

But he helped usher in the era of blockbusters, and made some of the most prestigious and memorable films of his generation.

Maybe some weren't the best, IMO but still can't deny their effect.

I don't know what the others problems were, I just was focusing on how problems in film-making sometimes are blessings and wondering aloud on here.

Interesting list I've just seen that some of you might like.

How some cool silent film effects were done

A Monster Calls

About a kid with a depressing life - bullied constantly, suffers from night terrors, mother is sic and father is absent. All his pent-up sadness and rage manifests in this imaginary tree-monster that tells him fairy-tales and demands that the kid tell him a a soul-searing truth in return.

Problem with this film is that it's not clear who it's aimed for. Children are likely to find it far too intense and upsetting, but the moral messages are too cliched, baldy stated and trite for an adult.

The kid's acting is good in some scenes, but his delivery is quite wooden in others. Sigourney Weaver as the grandmother conveys pain, sadness and frustration well through her face, unfortunately her British accent sounded forced to me and got in the way of her performance. Liam Neeson's voice in contrast was just perfect for the monster, the gravitas he puts into dialogue can elevate any script.

Spielberg is a raging sentimentalist but he's a master of the craft and anyone who denies his technical ability doesn't know what they're talking about.

Here is a good shot breakdown of Jaws:

Speaking of which, rewatched Minority Report recently. That movie is very good.

Definitely recommend Sing Street on Netflix. Really fun, feel-good movie. Excellent soundtrack. Had a smile on my face the whole time. Hard to imagine anyone not liking this.

This is a good recap. A Monster Calls is a garbage movie with the most manipulative score of the year. I hated this movie.

The golden globes results are lol.

TCM shill: Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love is on tonight. I don't think I've seen this one, but I usually like his stuff. I miss the Saturday night Hong Kong film fest that used to run in Austin.

Why? Seems like they've awarded the most critically acclaimed movies and performances of the year.

I stopped taking the Golden Globes seriously when I first found out many years ago that the voting is done by fewer than 100 foreign journalists and photographers who are wined, dined, and bribed by the movie studios.

Depending on who's hosting, I usually watch the opening 15 minutes or so, and then find something else to watch. Fortunately, TCM had a double feature of Annie Hall and then Hannah & Her Sisters from 8-12 last night.
