Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

If there was never another Ben Affleck movie made ever again, I'd be happy.

I have seen neither of them and will check them out. But curious that I got this quote from critics of Days of Heaven : Critical reaction initially varied, with many critics polarised by the beauty of the film, however finding a flaw in a perceived weakness of the story. Pretty funny, as all of his movies I have the same impression...

As an actor, I totally and Gone Baby Gone is simply amazing, with The Town being a good flick for its genre.

I would add Argo, which I really enjoyed.

Well yeah, that rounds up the 3 movies he directed ; I just prefer his 2 firsts. Might as well mention Good Will Hunting that while it was directed by Gus Van Sant, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote the script.

American Psycho 2: All American Girl 62/100

nothing like the original, but functions as a goofy light comedy about a teen serial killer. Mila Kunis elevates the slight material. Blended To Die For, American Pie and Dexter, kind of.

Mr Nobody

I just revisited Mr Nobody, but it felt like the first time watching it. In fact, I was more focus on the tables I was playing the first time around, when it was on tv in the background. Majestic movie. It is Cloud Atlas meets multiverses, meet parallel lives, meets time travel. For all the sci-fi lovers at there, this is a must.

9.1/10

Ok, I take back my statement. Affleck has made some good films. I still find him kind of annoying though for some inexplicable reason.

Affleck is somehow a good director. But his brother is an infinitely superior actor.

Ben Affleck is the new Keanu Reeves (or even Tom Cruise).

Everyone loves to slag him as talentless, when actually, he has quite a lot of talent.

The guy knows what he's doing. He's a solid actor and an even better writer/director.

That said, yes, his brother is a better actor. It's hard to believe just how good he was in TAOJJBTCRF.

I'm shocked at the nerd rage on twitter, AFFLECK SUCKS! HAVE U EVER SEE GIGLI? DAREDEVIL?

I'm stoked for Affleck, he'll do a fine job. Nolan is staying on board as producer right? Even if he's only consulted I'm excited. Then again I'm a Snyder fan boy to the max.

I was all ready to give out a little hate at Affleck, but today I rewatched Shakespeare in Love and remembered how much I love him. I roll over in laughter every time I see the scene where he comes into the theater and gives Shakespeare twenty questions over the new play and what role has been written JUST FOR HIM. He looks so pissed and above it all, but after hearing the description of Mercutio, he smiles and says, "...I will play it."

He is great, and not just "at what he does." He has range. He has depth. He has charm.

My opinion of Affleck is that his acting seems to have gotten worse, or at the very least he needs the right director to coax it out of him. He worse pretty well in Kevin Smith movies (I liked him in the often forgotten Jersey Girl, for example) and Good Will Hunting, but it starts to not really be working so well in the likes of Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. He really was the weakest main actor in Daredevil imo. I honestly can't remember seeing him in a new film since Jersey Girl, except a brief bit in Clerks 2, so maybe I'm just remembering the bad parts.
08-24-2013 , 04:44 PM
You're remembering terrible movies tho. There's no way those movies were bad because of Affleck, or that anyone else would have come off well in them. Would Gary Oldman have been able to save Daredevil? Pearl Harbor was outright terrible. Ewan McGregor is a pretty terrific actor, but even he was only passable in the Star Wars prequels.

All I know is I avoid Ben Affleck movies these days, because of him in Pearl Harbor and Daredevil

However, I accept it's most likely you are correct
08-24-2013 , 04:52 PM
Affleck is an ok actor, but let's not make him out to be De Niro or something.
08-24-2013 , 04:56 PM
De Niro is one of the GOAT. Yet if we were to look at De Niro's most recent collection of work and ONLY his most recent collection of work, would anyone be saying he's great?
08-24-2013 , 04:58 PM
Goddamnit. I went looking through his filmography thinking it'd be easy to list his last ten movies and prove my point, but like 9/10 of his last ten movies showcase how brilliant he is. I retract everything I said.

Cool, let me know what you think about it, for Mr Nobody nees more exposure... I have never seen Toto le Heros, but loved Le Huitieme Jour.

You're absolutely right. De Niro has been dog**** since Jackie Brown (1997). I hope Silver Linings Playbook make the return of a great actor.

I love Afflecks monologue in Boiler Room.

Blue Jasmine

Writing was a bit heavy-handed and the support characters were all either uninteresting or too cartoonish to care about, but Cate Blanchett's turn as the desparate fallen socialite is good enough to carry the whole thing.

The Great Gatsby

Holy overwrought! Really just overdone in every way possible. From the ridiculous camera zoom-ins to the cheap 3-d tricks to the violent bashing in of symbolism to the constant and unnecessary voiceover narration to the forced overacting to the 2:20 runtime it was all just too much. Went in expecting to like it more than most, came out thinking it was the worst movie I've seen this year.
08-25-2013 , 11:38 AM
There is a overly palpable element of arrogance to Affleck and his acting craft that ALWAYS seems to come thru to the viewer when ever he's on screen.

I find his work distasteful simply because he's ben affleck, irregardless of how bad his pasts works have been... and some of them have been pretty bad.
08-25-2013 , 12:14 PM
This is a serious question.

Does it actually matter one bit who plays a superhero? The acting in these films is basically meaningless. It's never the acting that kills them, it's the boring terrible narrative and 100% predictability.
