Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

The Wizard of Oz (theater obv) - There are a few movies that are consensus top 10ish that have never resonated particularly strongly with me. Casablanca is one (it's ok, but I far prefer The Third Man for crime/romance overseas in that decade), Singing in the Rain is another (but I haven't seen it in many years). And The Wizard of Oz. Sure I liked it as a kid, but I also loved Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer as a kid, and TWoO was never one of my favorites even at that age.

There's definitely a lot to like, probably first and foremost being the craft that went into the detailed sets and costumes. It's a great look that I'm fond of - artificial, but almost intentionally so. This is one thing that's lost forever to the sands of time - you'll never again see fake-looking indoor-for-outdoor sets unless there's a retro thing or in Disneyland.

The Munchkins are fun, the Witch is awesome, some of the songs are great. Somewhere Over the Rainbow never did much for me though, nor does If I Only Had a Brain. These songs are obviously iconic as are a bunch of the lines, but how much of that is them actually being amazing vs. coming at a time when we weren't already saturated with quality children's media and cementing themselves into popular culture early? Like, My Neighbor Totoro is a clearly superior children's movie. Mary Poppins probably is, though I haven't seen it in a decade.

It's a decent movie and an A+ piece of history, but is it really one of the top 5 movies ever made? Come on.

Gone With the Wind - Everything that I said above about consensus top movies?

Doesn't apply here.

Movie is phenomenal. Mammy and Scarlett are incredibly great characters. The men (even Rhett) are a little bit dull and not fleshed out, but since it's the reverse 98% of the time that's fine.

Watching it feels more like immersing yourself in a long, epic experience than it feels like just "watching a movie". Similar to Lawrence of Arabia and probably others that start creeping higher than 3 hours, especially if there's an intermission.

The story itself is great, and you have the sets and the lavish costumes and the nostalgia. Racism and "enjoyable" rape, but at least a black woman gives the best performance of the movie and one of the best ever.

I saw Scarlett as brilliant, cunning, and hard-working, and have no doubt whatsoever that she'll get Rhett back (if that's what she wants) after sleeping on it.

Don't like Somewhere Over the Rainbow?

Next thing you'll **** all over
The Rainbow Connection...

The Marx Brothers are awesome. The jokes hold up really well. The only thing that doesn't hold up is that sometimes it shows that they spent 6 weeks (if that?) making a movie.

Three stooges except for the Shemp era>>>The Marx Brothers imo.

Seriously, don't bother since you are obviously **** at rating movies.

The Lobster was alright, not my cup of tea personally, but rating it the same score as Suicide Squad is outright laughable since a lot of people here have pinned The Lobster as their best movie of the year so far.

Spectre 3.5/10 give me a fkn. break. It wasn't the greatest of bonds, but i'm pretty sure no film critic from here to mars would rate Suicide Squad higher.

Learn to rate better or GTFO.

Maybe there are 2 kinds of people, Marxists and Stoogists. I'm definitely a hardcore Marxist. Even Zeppo makes me laugh!

ya I never liked the stooges.

I never thought I would ever see the day where you would call yourself a Marxist

Wait. Am I supposed to write how I felt about a movie or conform to how other people felt about it? You say The Lobster wasn't your cup of tea and then blast me when my review basically says it wasn't my cup of tea either? My scale is really quite simple. Would I recommend The Lobster? Not really... so it can't be higher than a 6/10. Is it watchable? Sure. So I give it a 5.5 because I'd recommend it to some people, but definitely not the masses. Suicide Squad falls in the same boat to me... although upon further reflection, I'd lean more towards the 5/10 side of things. I recognize that it's a seriously flawed movie, but I still enjoyed watching it for the most part. An opinion on a film is subject to change over time or multiple viewings and I might wind up thinking less of Suicide Squad over time, but my expectations were so low upon first viewing that I was pretty satisfied with the end result.

Spectre I did not enjoy. At all. I only finished watching it out of a sense of duty.

While expectations tend to influence scores, they really shouldn't.

This is why I don't like to rate movies. Everyone has their own style/system. Also when I only see a score, it means nothing. See it on commercials, "So and so gives it four stars." Orly

I still want to find whatever ****ing moron reviewer gave the snippet "THE BEST BOURNE FILM YET!" to jason bourne.

The Lobster was well-made and imaginative but real disturbing in that it really tries to destroy the idea of adult love. It also has several horrific unpleasant scenes. You won't leave feeling good. Not sure if you'll be wiser either.

My fail-safe criteria is to avoid any movie where the ad campaign centers around reviews being given by regular people as they walk out the theater.
08-29-2016 , 02:20 PM
Hints: If you see any "review" spots before the movie comes out, it's a bad sign. As said, testimonial spots are also a really bad sign. After the movie is out a few weeks, these types of spots typically mean the business isn't living up to the perceived quality of the movie (see The Iron Giant).

Don't know why I decided to watch again " The notebook" quite strange for me, I'm a person that hates dramas as so on..

I just do it cause I enjoy it. I have no professional aspirations, nor do I think my ability to articulate what I think is anything special. But still, this thread exists on a forum I post on and I like to grade movies, so here we are.
08-29-2016 , 03:33 PM
I like movie grades. Of course you have to take the source into account and look at other movies the person has graded.

Wow,just heard Gene Wilder passed...
Hope he didn't see the Young Frankenstein posts...

Whatever happened to B movies!

Don't Breathe is a fantastic little horror movie. Lots of good scares, some built on genuine discomfort rather than cheap jump scares, though there are plenty of jump scares, too. A few things seemed rather convenient, though they worked in the moment. I liked the story and each character's motivation.

I give this perhaps a 7/10. For comparison, I'd give The Descent an 8/10, and I thought that was one of the best horror movies I've ever seen.

Mulholland Drive.

Really deserving as best movie of the 21st century imo.
