The best animated movie to come out recently is How to Train your Dragon imo.

Agreed

Just watched The Samaritan, and while it is hard to picture Samuel L Jackson in a neo noir thriller, it does work. I quite enjoyed it and suggest to anyone that likes neo noir movies. There is quite a few being released lately, but none, in my opinion, is better then Drive.

7.5/10

Which one of you saw A Field in England? I just watched it and have no ****ing idea what I just watched. Needless to say I didn't like it. Although I enjoyed the visuals and performance by Smiley.

It's incredibly inaccessible. I cannot help but wonder if there's something lost in cultural translation. I'm a Canadian dude with no knowledge of English history/folklore.

That was me. I don't think you lost anything, unless you couldn't follow the accents. It's just inaccessible.

I watched it a second time, assuming I'd either like it much better or much worse as I knew what to expect, but it was exactly the same experience.

Overall I liked it, but as filmic impressionism rather than traditional narrative.

The bit with the guy on the rope is very memorable, and has a touch of Chaney's Phantom of the Opera about it.

spoiler stuff for A Field in England

Spoiler:
what was with the tug of war stuff? they start tugging and boom, Smiley shows up. Maybe Wheatley is going for this but I couldn't help but feel like I was high, or maybe a reel or two were missing. =(

I checked out the trailer on YouTube after watching and some guy mentioned fairy rings play a role in the tug of war bit.

there are also theories that they're dead already. how does the audience know this?! grrr whatever! >=\

even though I had no idea wtf was going on, I enjoyed the sequence where Smiley did something unseen in the tent. there was also some mind-bending sequence where trippy **** happened and Wheatley/Rose did some cool stuff with the camera.

Out of Wheatley's stuff I've only seen Kill List and freaking loved it. Haven't gotten around to seeing Down Terrace and Sightseers hasn't been made available in my neck of the woods.

Fun fact (I may have mentioned this before) I posted a tweet about how much I enjoyed the look, feel and cinematography of Kill List and the DP (Laurie Rose) replied, "Thanks!" haha He doesn't follow me, I'm not on a list of his but he once chimed in when I talked about how much I dislike it when I'm bashing a small indie film. He said they find these things helpful and all feedback is appreciated. I think I said something like, "I feel like I'm murdering someone's child."

anyway, rant over. I was looking forward to A Field in England and was thoroughly disappointed. I'm eager to read the thoughts of others when it's more available here in North America.

On the topic of animated films, I believe The Croods is underappreciated. Sure it's a commercial success but among film lovers/critics it seemed to fly under the radar. I think it's the best animated film of the year (so far).

TheCroShow,

Love Kill List, hate the ending though for its logical inconsistency.

Sightseers is his best movie IMO.

I podcasted about all his movies in a 15 minute cast a few months back, check my location/personal page for the link.

cool thank you. I'll listen to it on my way to work

That bit you couldn't watch in A Field in England was the bit I loved! Heh I also may or may not have written "mind-bending visuals" in my unfinished review. That's certainly one constant between KL and AFIE, memorable, bad ass visuals. I'll definitely seek out Down Terrace and Sightseers and will see his future films.

I woke up thinking about A Field in England so I cannot dismiss it as a bad film, just didn't connect with me.

Well, just watch 2 disappointing movies : Crawlspace and Not Today. The first one is a bad action movie with no script whatsoever, to the extent that I stopped 25 min, and the latter is a Christian movie. What I really dislike about Christian movies, is that they show us an absurd world and make sense of it. Everything always has a purpose... Oh well, if any of yous were planning on watching any of these 2 movies, just skip them.

I thought crawlspace was a horror movie.

Did you listen to the podcast?

There is a bit in sightseers that was my laugh of the year, when Tina finds unexpected pictures on a camera, and shouts something. I'm smirking about it right now. I may buy this movie soon.

I listened and enjoyed it quite a bit. I'll have to rewatch Kill List again because the final scene didn't deter my enjoyment.

I listened to most of your Star Trek Into Darkness podcast (will finish after work) and laughed a lot when you guys talked about people ruining scenes in movies, like the end of King Kong or The Titanic. I had a similar situation when I watched Fruitvale Station. Some lady was shouting at the screen as if the real police were there. It was uncomfortable and funny in retrospect.

Glad you enjoyed it

I can't believe we're in our 3rd year of doing it. It's a lot of fun, but we rarely get feedback, so really don't know what people actually think of it.

It's something I want to get into myself. I'll definitely listen more. Outside of very few I rarely get the chance to talk films so it's fun to listen to like minded people.

My favourites on movies are, in order of best first:

Chinstroker vs punter
outside the cinema
Gentlemen's Guide to Midnight cinema
talk without rhythm
horror etc

I don't want to sound racist, but the dim-witted soldier...

Spoiler:
the guy who made the joke about telling his wife that he hates her and he ****ed her sister. who played that guy? Barratt or Glover?

Sure I'll start a new thread because the film is so ****ed up that it should initiate some solid discussion
