Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

When I was watching Groundhog Day I had never realized until this week that Michael Shannon was in it, he plays the part of the groom of young couple that get married Fred & Debbie. I had never noticed it till he gives them the tickets for Wrestlemania and thought he looks a little like Michael Shannon.

Just checked it out and it was his first ever movie.

Completely useless information i know. but I suppose I am a bit of a geek when it comes to movies

Rbk I think, theoretically, it does "weaken" the case at least a little bit.

It was largely not shot with a "male gaze" afaik; we didn't get to ogle the bodies all
that much.

Spoilerish coming up but not really.

So one problem is that you have ~2 women who are the "aging" beauties and who are nasty, and when they get it dished back to them you'd hear the audience snickering (largely women tbh). People loved that the vapid b's who only care about beauty got what's coming to them. The movie supports your snickering a bit by giving some biting one-liners and such. In my estimation, the attitude of the audience towards these women early on was sexist (like, the main character was no better, she's just younger and more beautiful). Perhaps that's part of the point of the film (to dredge out sexism we have towards models and celebrity culture or w/e) but as I said I generally don't think that's a good road to go down. Note I'm more talking about the first 2/3rds or so, it changes later.

To summarize: the audience LOVED the schadenfraude (sp?) any time a beautiful woman was told off or got screwed in some way.

Holy crap, Jupiter Ascending is as bad as you've heard.

It's airing on HBO and I was curious.

I've never seen anything like this. It's like watching something made by a group of 7 year-olds who pass off story points to the next kid every 5 minutes. And every idea is cobbled together from another, better source, like Men in Black or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Mila Kunis has zero screen presence. Odd, because she's quite likable on TV.

Eddie Redmayne should have to give back his Oscar after this. I can't believe the directors let him make the choices he made. It's actually worth watching just so you can gape at Redmayne's bizarre performance.

The only good part of this was Tuppence Middleton's naked butt.

man I had zero interest in watching it but after that review my curiosity is piqued

JA was actually worse than I thought that is was going to be... to this day, I have only ever seen 10 minutes of the first act.

I had an idea that briliant visuals might offset horrid dialogue or terrible acting... I was wrong.

I felt it was appropriate to judge this book by it's cover.

One more thing on the Forrest Gump vs Pulp Fiction. Wandering around the rural West this morning, scanning the FM dial, some old song that (I think) was in Forrest Gump came on.

Despite using so much classic popular music to tell the story, I think that Gump was significantly in second place on the soundtrack that year too.

Also the new Independence Day is showing at the local theater on main street in this small town where I'm staying this evening. Fortunately, the town's microbrewery is across the street. So, no aliens.

Speaking of book...the original script was about 600 pages.

Enough for three movies.

The original script.

Makes sense they cut out so much of the script for the one movie that alot of exposition was lost.

Has anyone seen Swiss Army Man?

My teenage child wants to see it. The weirdness and grossness I guess is ok with me as long as there's nothing too perverted.

Apparently there are dead man boners

Tickets already bought. I'll have to cover her eyes or pretend I'm european.

Don't mean to burst your bubble there Microbet, but if this is your 16 year old daughter you're referring too, it's 2016, she's already seen her share of boners both covered and uncovered. Not necessarily irl, but definitely on the interwebs. Although she may not have seen any dead man ones yet.

Which is the trouble with Harry in Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry, a vastly underrated joy of a film.

It was my younger daughter. She's 14. The 16 yo didn't want to see it.

It was still ok.

It was very weird, but we liked it. It was surreal, but there was still a lot of real stuff too.

My daughter is a little puzzled. This is pretty much her first weirdo art movie. She was into seeing it because she's into horror and it definitely wasn't that. But we liked it.

By the way, you're doing something very right as a father/are very lucky that your two teenage daughters love to spend that time with you one on one, bonding together.

I've never been a parent, but I was a teenage once and I can certainly say that's not common for teens to want to spend that time with their parents. So cherish it/good on you.

Thx. We're pretty close as a family and there's all kinds of parents, grandparents, and kids doing stuff together.

Yeah, that's awesome microbet. Speaks well of you and your family both, I'm jealous.

That's awesome. I love those. Probably some clickbait page that covers this list, but what are the other big ones? Alfred Molina in Raiders obv, Nicolas Cage in Fast Times. I know there's a bunch more.

Richard Dreyfuss in Valley of the Dolls.

Jeff Goldblum was a rapist at the beginning of Death Wish.

Keira Knightly was the fake Princess Amidala in Phantom Menace.

Samuel L Jackson is listed as "black guy" in the credits of Sea of Love. I guess they somehow shot a movie set in New York with only one black guy.

Melissa McCarthy had a tiny role in Go (roommate to cheating gay hairdresser).

Sofia Coppola is the baby getting christened at the climax of The Godfather.

For a late night movie I found Rooster Cogburn & the Lady (sequel to true grit) for rent. Some of the transfer or something is messed up in one scene but it's mostly intact.

I'm way biased towards this one, but Katharine Hepburn is so good playing opposite bogart and John Wayne types she makes this good on her own. The villains and side characters are hilarious too.

I watched Take Shelter yesterday, I liked it but I felt a little let down after all the hype I'd read on it here in this thread. Seemed very similar in a lot of ways to Midnight Special. I might have liked Shelter better if I'd seen it first.

Never saw a movie with my dad. I doubt he's been in a theater in 20 years. Good job #1Dadding Micro

Hadn't heard about that movie until this discussion, looks pretty weird/interesting. Also seems like Ratcliffe was born to play that role, he looks like a corpse in real life imo.
