Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I've said before I was really turned onto movies by a friend who recommended, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out and Body Double to me way back when. A time capsule trifecta of excellent DePalma movies.

He also suggested never watching or reading reviews or trailers of movies you know you are going to watch anyway based on the director/producer, actors or subject matter. I found this to be an excellent piece of advice. As well he told me not obsess over movie making techniques as it can cloud your interpretation of the final product. I haven't found this to be as black and white as the first piece of advice but it does have its merits.

If Neon Demon is more self indulgent than Only God Forgives, which it sounds like might be the case, then I am ready to dish out the hate. Where did you guys watch, vudu or some other VoD service?

The Witch Goat witch movie?

Holy **** at The Machinist. Bale was unreal and scary looking, but not sure I loved it as a whole. Very dark movie, a lot to take in. May force myself to rewatch, tho it might be tough. What are other ppls thoughts?

In the Heart of the Sea

This was mediocre at best. This is the "true" story that supposedly Melville based his book Moby Dick off of. Unfortunately (or fortunately for Melville), this story is way less interesting than Captain Ahab needing to hunt his whale. This is just a story of survival, and other movies have done that way better (Cast Away, and All is Lost just to name a couple off the top of my head). There are some nice set pieces, like the first whale hunt, but the visual thrills can't make up for all the yawning that happens in between. I actually didn't really care about any of the characters, and didn't really feel much of anything when they start dropping off one by one.

Moby Dick is a story of revenge. About a Captain hellbent on killing this demonic beast. Heart of the Sea is about a crew trying to get back home to their families alive. It's such a dramatic shift in theme, that going into it blind, I couldn't understand where the story was going until I was already annoyed by it.

bubble boy is nothing like Seinfeld not even sure how you got there but don't go into it with that expectation or you will be sorely disappointed.

that being said it's hilarious.

There was a bubble boy in Seinfeld
06-27-2016 , 07:04 PM
Dunno what any of you are talking about. John Travolta was the bubble boy.

Jesus, saw this on a trip for business, trying to score brownie points with a couple of ladies.

This was terrible, and it infuriates me how degrading it was to women.
Several women were discussing it afterwards, puzzled on the merits of the film,we rehashed certain scenes, and you could tell it dawned on them the terribleness of the plot.

Have read interviews with the director, and he is really full of crap.

Read reviews, and the best one said it was like hanging out with a stranger on cocaine on a Monday.

Pitiful,exhausting and partly infuriating.

Liked it. Bale's performance is otherworldly. Like the dark, slow pace. Never thought about rewatching it, but might do so, come to think about it... I would put it in "good, not great, worth a watch" category.

I think you missed the main point of the film. That youth and beauty cannot help but be corrupted by the fashion industry, fame, and even the Male Gaze.

The filmmaker is railing AGAINST how women are treated in Hollywood and New York and in the media. Granted, he does so in an overtly offensive way. He's literalizing how today's society eats pretty, young girls alive, and how women themselves cannibalize each other in the pursuit of fame.

In case you didn't notice, two of the three screenwriters and the cinematographer are female.

Not seeing Neon Demon because I'm squeamish about the cannibalism.

Anyone else remember the John Travolta Bubble Boy? Silly question. I know everyone my age or older remembers it.

Rifftrax has a great Boy in the Bubble commentary.

I like those dark, weird, moody movies that don't make much sense on a plot level, but there's something that just doesn't deliver about The Machinist.

I keep thinking one more watch will push it over, and Christian Bale and Jennifer Jason Leigh are really committed to whatever is supposed to be going on, but it just never comes together.

agree.

it's one of the movies I feel like I should like but I can't seem to.

TV show on TBS, Angie Tribeca. Although like police academy, sometimes I have a hard time finishing the show, I usually rewatch it because it is better than most shows on t.v. jokes are sometimes deep.

I remember when this was on t.v.. Another good movie was Blow Out by Travolta. After that everyone knew he was more than Barbarino. When poker commentator Gabe Kaplan was an actor and a bigger star than Travolta in the same show.

Had a urge to watch some Bill Murray Movies this week Started off with Meatballs Which i have never seen before thought it was pretty good Murray holds the whole film together and is class as ever. I sure alot of people older than me loved that movie as a Kid.

Then I watched What About Bob? One of Murray's greatest movies IMO its so funny and the chemistry between Dreyfuss and Murray is perfect, If you don't like this movie I doubt we would get along.

Finally I watched Groundhog Day Which is what some might say is Murray's greatest movie, I have seen it over 10 time but it never gets old think its a masterpiece.

I am a huge Murray fan and will be looking to watch some of his other great movies later in the week, any recommendations would be great. Not everything he touches turns to gold and I wish I could get them hours back in my life from watching Lost In Translation which I thought was utter ****e.

I hear that. Hate me some Lost in Translation, one of the most overrated movies evaaa! What a con job.

I used to listen to The Canon but can only take so much of Devin Faraci yelling. He's among my favorite writers but he can be annoying in large doses. I listen to: Movie BS with Bayer and Snider, Fighting in the War Room, The Watch, The Next Picture Show, Movie Bears Podcast, and The Green Screen of Death (shameless plug)

GTFO Lost in Translation is fantastic.

And regarding Travolta in Boy in the Bubble - he was actually dating the actress who played his mother in that movie - Diana Hyland. She died of cancer soon afterwards.
