Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

The Man With the X-ray Eyes Schlocky tale of a man, well, with X-ray eyes. After a monkey dies in an experiment to improve eyesight, a doctor thinks it's a good idea to try it himself.

There are some pretty lol moments in this. I kept thinking, if he can see through stuff why isn't he seeing people naked. Yeah, I was thinking that. Sure enough, he was a perv too. Other stuff happens that was pretty lol as well.

Look for Don Rickles in a bit part.

Worth a watch if you like this sort of thing.

For me it's Vertigo, then North by Northwest, then Rear Window. I also love Psycho, Rope, The Trouble with Harry. I rank Birds as the worst Hitchcock I've seen (I've seen about 12 of them). It's still very good, just not one of my favorites.

Severely underrated? By whom??

Every Top Ten list of Hitchcock's films I've ever seen has always included The Birds. And it's usually even in the top 5 or 6.

So who are all these people who have semi-dismissed and/or underrated it?

Why did I watch Mr. Right

I mean, I know why I watched it. Anna Kendrick is hot, and Sam Rockwell, Tim Roth, and RZA are generally awesome.

But why did I watch it

I really did know better. I don't have any reasonable excuse. I knew it was going to be terrible.

Am I really that susceptible to Anna Kendrick in cat ears?

That was based on no research or evidence other than me not remembering anyone putting it near the very top, and it's basically what I assumed going in so it's the "sense I had" of it.

If you asked a bunch of film students none of them would name it. It isn't in the "canon" as strongly as Vertigo or Psycho. Also:

I personally think we should edit out those misogynistic rants as to not corrupt our youth.

Civil War

"Civil War is about as fun as summer blockbusters get. With solid performances all around, good surprises, the perfect dose of humor, and relentlessly awesome action, this movie takes over the top spot as Marvel’s best film yet – and it’s not all that close, it really blows The Avengers away"
Pretty much agree with TDK's summary review of Civil War. Saw it last night - it was fantastic. Don't know if it blows Avengers away, but it's better. It was really fun to see all the different heroes come together. Ant Man and Spidey added some great comedy to an otherwise serious movie.

One thing I didn't get:
Spoiler:

When the bad guy was reading the hypnotic code words to Bucky, Bucky broke free of his restraints mid-way through the word list. Why couldn't he have just covered his ears and done the, "nannananana, I'm not listening I'm not listening" thing? I know I'm simplifying it, but it seems like he could've done something to stop himself from hearing.

White God http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2844798/

Quite a good Hungarian drama. A young girl is forced to abandon her dog on the street by her father.
The dog goes through a series of dark and violent experiences as he tries to find his
way back to her. Getting revenge on those who hurt him as he retraces his steps
back home.

Really engrossing movie, very well shot and acted. A couple of scenes felt a bit forced, but that's to be expected when working with a cast that includes 100 dogs.

I can't say I enjoyed this movie, one or two scenes were a bit tough to watch for a dog lover, but I was certainly drawn in to the story and wanted to see where it led. 8/10

ferris bueller's day off

truly one of the greatest teen movies ever made. saw it tonight in the theater for its 30th anniversary (wtf? where'd the years go?); you can catch it again theatrically on the 18th.

Monsters University.

Sully and Mike, the monsters from Monsters Inc return to show a story how they met in college.

This was an interesting, special view for me.My son,who is graduating this week from high school, wanted to watch it with me again, joked about it helping him with getting ready for college.
And it's actually better than I remember.
The story is a basic outsiders struggling to fit in,kind of a "Revenge of the Nerds",but not R rated.
And it doesn't go in the "you can do anything if you try hard enough" ,it veers off into the lesson of leaning into your strengths and that it doesn't always work out the way you plan.
I must admit, watching the two main characters took me back to when Monsters Inc came out and I took my son to see it,he identified with being the small guy and I was his big buddy.
So these characters have special meaning to us I think.
Maybe that colors the way we viewed it,we are already predisposed to want to like the sequel from the first film, and experiences during that time also play a part in our opinion.

So,I think it's a good film,and it brought back a great memory.

It's been too long since I've seen Hitchcock movies to rank them well, but

Rear Window - really liked this one

Notorious - I think I really liked this one, but it's been a while

Vertigo - yeah, but it's also been a long time

Rebecca, now there's underrated Hitchcock!
05-16-2016 , 12:51 AM
Not by the academy. They gave it Best Picture of the Year. No other Hitchcock film ever won that.

If you mean by people/Hitchcock fans then yeah, that's probably true.

It's a great trivia question.

I never really got this. I mean, I liked it and all but I don't understand the cult status.

IMO Sixteen Candles is much better.

I can't place either the birds or vertigo in the top five Hitchcock filmography. I am probably in the minority here, but I find both difficult to watch... the birds less objective than vertigo.

I personally don't like Ferris Bueller but I understand why people love it. It has the naive insouciance of privileged youth at its core.

Yeah,I never liked the movie, cause Ferris just seemed so douchey.

Don't care for The Breakfast Club either.

Better Off Dead,Weird Science and The Sure Thing were my cup of tea.

About 10 years ago, I got to talk to Anthony Michael Hall for a couple minutes. He seemed legitimately flattered (and confused) when I told him Weird Science was one of my top five favorite movies.

He then looked around quickly, lowered his voice, and asked, "Were there titties in that movie?"
05-16-2016 , 10:01 PM
The Sure Thing criminally underrated. Pretty in Pink is damn good too in that genre/era. Harry Dean Stanton's role as Molly's Dad in that movie was really cool and poignant.

Pick up Artist pretty good as well. That was first time I saw Downey and he def caught my attention.

My mom took me to see that in the theater when I was 14. She was SHOOK...lol. I thought it was amazing, minus the "culture" scenes.

If you were 14-17, maybe around that age, FBDO resonates huge whether you're rich or poor. It was also legit hilarious in many scenes. One of my favorite moments was when they called Sloan's house and the machine says they're at the funeral or whatever, and when she gives the number where they can be reached it's just sobbing.

Sixteen Candles was a good movie (many things about it would not be in any movie today without intentionally being politically incorrect), but I really think it had more appeal to older people and rich people. There was almost nothing for me to identify with in that movie, even though I enjoyed it.

It's like the idea of Pretty in Pink being about a poor girl from across the tracks who drove a Karmann Ghia. Hughes's idea of poor was, uh, interesting.

How old are you?

Better Off Dead was easily my favorite "teen" movie, and I probably saw it well over 100 times. It had some cheesy and gross moments in it, but it was incredible overall. It's stunning that Cusack literally hates Savage Steve Holland over it. There are so many hilarious moments in it, it's impossible to count. You have to have an offbeat sense of humor to really enjoy it though, due to how patently absurd it is.

I had drinks with the bully from Better Off Dead in Key West once. He was working as a server, co-worker of my dad's gf.

For 80s high school I like Back to the Future.
05-16-2016 , 10:47 PM
You mean the jock he was trying to beat at skiing? I don't really think he was a bully, he was just a big douche.

My favorite line in that movie is:

"Lane, I've been at this school for 7 and a half years. I'm no dummy."
05-16-2016 , 10:48 PM
80's high school is, was, and always will be, (for me at least) Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
