A Field in England
If I had to summarise it, it's like someone blended Eraserhead, Witchfinder General and the acid trip sequence from The Tingler.
Not strong on narrative, and having a distinct amateur feel until they get to The Field, this is a film of imagery, sound design and mood. It's the cinema version of works by the great Impressionists. Some of the imagery is haunting, and has me thinking about it still, 4 days after watching it.
Not perfect though, there's one sequence that strobes between shots that I literally couldn't watch because it was too pain inducing.
There's another shot, involving a slo-mo, a tent, and a man on a rope, that might just be in the 20 greatest shots of all time.
The underlaying of the imagery with the blackest of very-British gallows humour complements this nicely. I laughed out loud more than once.
74/100
I intend to watch this again in a few weeks. I fully expect my score to either go up considerably or down considerably.
