Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

A Field in England

If I had to summarise it, it's like someone blended Eraserhead, Witchfinder General and the acid trip sequence from The Tingler.

Not strong on narrative, and having a distinct amateur feel until they get to The Field, this is a film of imagery, sound design and mood. It's the cinema version of works by the great Impressionists. Some of the imagery is haunting, and has me thinking about it still, 4 days after watching it.

Not perfect though, there's one sequence that strobes between shots that I literally couldn't watch because it was too pain inducing.

There's another shot, involving a slo-mo, a tent, and a man on a rope, that might just be in the 20 greatest shots of all time.

The underlaying of the imagery with the blackest of very-British gallows humour complements this nicely. I laughed out loud more than once.

74/100

I intend to watch this again in a few weeks. I fully expect my score to either go up considerably or down considerably.

Jeff, Who Lives At Home: Very quirky film which covers a day in the life of a 30-something stoner who lives at home with his parents, and believes everything in the world is interconnected. Other than a robbery scene, I liked the flow of the film (where Jeff gives in and goes wherever perceived signs take him), and will admit I was a bit surprised by the ending - which nicely tied the story together. I also kind of liked Judy Greer in this one.

Room 237 - doc about a bunch of idiots who have idiotic interpretations of The Shining. Not sure why people like this one. It's just stupid.

Gasland II - Well done doc about the problems with natural gas drilling. It made me really pissed off.

Europa Report - Indie sci-fi about a manned mission to Europa. Pretty cool. Well done.

What the fandango? Did they re-shoot the whole movie or something? Remember those oddly-toned, bizarre 50's-homage trailers they posted before? The ones that looked like student films and didn't make any sense? This trailer makes it look like a completely different movie. Not necessarily a movie I'd like to see, but a much, much better movie.

Trailer editor to the rescue, imo.

That looks like crap. The first trailer was much more interesting.

The first trailer looked more interesting as a standalone piece, but I was scratching my head about how it was going to translate to a feature-length movie. I didn't understand if it was going to be a satire, or a straight melodrama or... At least this one has some semblance (although it's extremely vague) of a story.

Looks like standard BEE adaptation movie now

Have you guys seen the trailer for Spike Lee's Oldboy? Can't say I'm excited. I'll give it a shot when it comes out.

i just saw it , and i am legit disgusted

I will be seeing that. I love the original, but I do really like some of Spike Lee's stuff, and this looks like it's part of his good spectrum.

Also the poster sold me:

Brolin and Olsen are selling points for me. Olsen's performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene is a heartbreaker, great stuff.

i like olsen / brolin /spike but its always weird for me to see foreign movies , especially korean / japanese ones remade (almost verbatim)

I won't be seeing that one... ^

------------------------------------------------------------------------

a couple great crime movie seen recently.

Michael Manns Thief

a less developed version of heat that was made in 1981 staring James Caan and Tuesday Weld. I thoroughly enjoyed this very early 80's period piece about a gritty Safe Cracker trying to go legit by doing one last Diamond job. the actual "Job" scenes are really great and typical reality based Michael Mann stuff.

a french made Mafia movie... The Sicilian Clan

great sound track and another really good late 1960's period piece about a Sicilian job to steal diamonds from an international flight.

Upstream Color

I defy anyone to watch this movie and claim they understood what the hell they just watched. I found this article to be very helpful.

I "understood" two thirds of the film. The entire time I was all wtf? Missed a visual cue in the beginning, that's why I lost out on the third part.

Yeah Oldboy knock off remake here we come. I like Spike Lee, and Brolin is one of my fav actors as well... but ffs come on people, just watch the original and be happy with it. Subtitles aren't gonna kill you and I don't agree how hollywood can just kinda copy and paste a proven successful story/movie and print money.

The Departed, Girl with Dragon Tattoo, Vanilla Sky and now Oldboy are movies that first to come mind. Most remakes don't even give credit to the original which I think is bs as well.
07-11-2013 , 08:26 PM
Oldboy is a masterpiece of a movie. Can't imagine a US remake can do it any justice.
07-11-2013 , 08:49 PM
Hoooooold on now. Vanilla Sky was a tremendous remake.

Oh hell yes

I don't think it works at all. Either on its own or compared to the original. Big misfire.
