OK, thanks for the advice

watched hateful 8. spoilers ahead.
Spoiler:
seems like ppl are either loving it or pretty meh about it. I certainly loved it. Story itself was not anything special, but the way this story was told was def. special. Tarantino does not fall into stupid cliches, which is one of the main reasons Tarantino films are and should be hyped. Sh*t is original. Secondly, Tarantino never f**ks up is the cast. There is no one in Hollywood better for a southern hillbilly role than Walton Goggins and to think that The Shield producers were skeptical about him in 2001 when the 1st season was filmed. Seems like Chris Mannix role was written for him. Same with Samuel L. Jackson who does not dissapoint (imo the dingus scene is def in top 5 Tarantino scenes and the way it is delivered is nothing short of superb). Jennifer, Kurt and Tim were good too. Too bad Madsen's role was so small, since he was awesome in Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill and I was waiting for him to shine in h8ful 8 too. Nevertheless this is one of the best films in recent years imo and if u loved Reservoir Dogs ur gonna love this.

As much as Roth was great for Roth's role, I couldn't help but feel the roll was intended for Christopher Waltz. Considering Quentin's last few movies I have a feeling I may be right about that. But would Waltz have turned Quentin down after working with him twice already?

Perhaps he's the kind of guy that doesn't want to do more than one movie at once, and there were scheduling conflicts with this and I don't know, Specter I guess. Hummm...

I mean Roth is pretty much perfect for it too, bit Waltz would have been as well, so I'm leaning towards Waltz was originally intended for the role.

I used to fancy myself a huge Tarantino fan, but I just realized I may have to re-evaluate that. Although I don't think any of his films are awful, I think his best film was his first film.

Does a director who's best film was his first film deserve to be considered among the best of all time?

Then again, Orson Welles is considered one of the all time best, and his first film is generally called his best. So I guess perhaps it is possible.

I also admit I haven't seen Reservoir Dogs recently enough to be sure it's his best. But I do know it's his most real film, and personally I'm a big fan of real.

I don't think American Ultra should be there.

Not saying it was really good, but not 10 worst of the year. I enjoyed it over all and I don't even like Eisenberg all that much and definitely have a hard time liking Stewart after the Twlight movies.

So I figure if I don't like the two main stars of the movie all that much over all but still find the movie reasonably entertaining and enjoyable, there is no way that movie can be 10 worst of the year.

Pulp Fiction is Tarantino's best film.
12-21-2015 , 08:07 PM
As I said I haven't seen Reservoir Dogs recently enough to argue my opinion legitimately, not to mention I'd likely still elect Pulp Fiction as the 2nd best.

Either way my point still, more or less stands, if a directors best film (s) were his first and/or 2nd movies can he be considered among the best all time.

Because in either case, RD being his best or PF being his best he peeked early (like Woody Alan and actually Martin Scorsese too but I probably shouldn't get into that.) So if we're right that he peeked early, can he legitimately be considered among the best all time?

American Ultra was way better than either Minions or The Good Dinosaur.

Thanks much! Will make note for sure -

I'd rather raise a kid (especially a daughter) on only animated movies from Studio Ghibli than without them.

I have a weakness for movies like The man from Earth or Devil (The elevator one), basically movies that play in a confined setting and are often about a group of people talking, some mystery, you get the gist. Also including movies like Cube and the loads of movies where a group of strangers take part in an experiment of sorts.

Any great recommendations? I probably have seen most of the ones that are imdb 5+ but always looking for more.

I assume you've seen the most obvious one, Rope.

Although you didn't list it, so maybe you somehow haven't.

Perhaps somewhat of a stretch, but 127 Hours somewhat meets the "confined space" criteria... Coherence as well, where the action takes place in the living room. Will try to find more...

Yeah, didn't mention it, but The Rope is great and remains my favorite Hitchcock flick.

Both look great, I have't really looked into movies of this kind that are that old but it wasn't a conscious decision, will definitely watch both (if it's not super well known, you can assume I haven't seen a movie if it's made before 1990 or so, I'm not really a film buff).

Nothing looks cool, will watch. I liked Coherence (perfectly fits the profile of movies I'm talking about) and thought 127 hours was boring.

We can see it more than once. I didn't get to see Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm until 35 years after it was released.

Kurosawa's High and Low, at least the first half, is terrific for this.
