I had the opportunity to see Before Midnight and instead saw Man of Steel again. Let the tilt begin.

It seems Hollywood has finally gotten it right lately in that by fully developing the psychology of the villain characters you full develop the story and reason for the hero to exist.

To be sure, there is literally almost no villain in this movie if one takes a moment and looks at it from a perspective other than that of a Human.

Zod's reason's for existence, and indeed his engineered perspective of life, is a very noble one... protect and serve his own people. In some ways, Kal El is the outcast and his family is criminally responsible for his own races near extinction by withholding technology that wold have benefited the greater good of Krypton. However, Krypton's societal ways brought this destruction upon itself by withholding individuality and freedom to make choices and thereby limiting the variables of it's own future.

Certainly the mythos of Superman being a symbol of the American way(truth and justice) still exists, but is in someways tempered in this movie by the truism that within any developed society, and individual, there is an inherent conflict between good and evil. When the idea of Superman was written decades ago, this symbolism rang BLINDLY true, today things are much more complicated.

I mean in this movie... Superman actually killed somebody.
Sorry, I am just going back to reread what everyone else thought and this one has stunned me. We can't have seen the same film.

MoS has generated truly remarkable reactions. I've read many reviews now, and often what one critic references to praise the movie, another critic will use as evidence to show why the film doesn't work. Completely opposite perceptions of the exact same things.

Um? Huh? Wha? What? Did I read that correctly? Hmm?

THIS VIDEO DOES NOT EXIST
I laughed so hard at the trailer. Looks funnier than most comedies this year

You read it correctly. I had a great time watching MoS again, but I do now feel like I have let down a few people ITT. The thing for me is that MoS is a big screen theatrical experience, whereas Before Midnight is a film I'll happily watch in the dark comfort of my home, tissues and lube close by.

We had the same decision and went the other way. Probably will see MoS this Friday - I believe you may have chosen the better portion....

Cloud Atlas is incredibly boring, I kind of nodded off after 2 hours so I don't know what happened after that lol. I doubt I missed much. 2/10

Man Push Cart is quite good, one of those like neo-neo-realist movies about a Pakistani man who operates a push cart in NYC. I'd recommend Bahrani's works in reverse order: Goodbye Solo > Chop Shop > Man Push Cart. I'm a fan of them all. 7/10

Star Trek: Into Darkness delivered an excellent sequel to the last movie; which I think is one of the better 'summer blockbusters' in a the last 10 years. I think that one is better than this one by a hair but if you were a fan of that surely you won't be disappointed. Love this cast. Wonderful chemistry. 8/10

I don't understand. I checked out the teaser trailer on YouTube. Is there another one? I didn't look laughably bad to me. What's funny about it?

I don't have strong feelings about Gravity one way or another, I'm just confused.

The entire trailer for Gravity is in space. A couple is having a nice chat in their space suits, there is a malfunction, and something bad happens. From what I can tell, that's the whole movie. There is not an inkling of a flashback or any other setting--real, imagined, or remembered.

It would have to be an exceptional script to make this come close to working.

I assume that's why people were laughing.

It will be exceptional and you will eat those words

There is nothing in my post to eat. I said it would have to be exceptional, so if it is exceptional, then why am I dining on verbs and nouns?

On the other hand, there is no victory to be had either. I didn't say anything that might turn out to be right or wrong.

I simply made a fact-based statement about the trailer.

So there.

You might think you have won with your level-headed demeanor and solid logic, but I am here to tell you THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!

the gravity trailer tilts me so hard... sound is space, you've got to be kidding.

There's something hilarious about Sandra Bullock shouting "ahh ahhh ahhh!" through the whole teaser. Ending with her flipping around is comedic gold.
06-18-2013 , 11:18 AM
lol... yeah.

when I see that sequence, I find myself uncontrollably waving good bye to her because if this scenario actually happened... there would be absolutely no rescue at that rate of acceleration(not that we know if she's rescued in the movie)

Probably will see the movie anyway

I thought This Is the End was hilarious. Funniest comedy in a while with lots of lol moments.

I remember when that script was first going around (and Natalie Portman was attached) there was talk that Cuarón might attempt to shoot the entire film in a single, uninterrupted shot.

Even if your logic is sound, I'm not sure that makes is laughably bad. I'm not even sure the average audience member thinks about the trailer beyond it being an intense, exciting action sequence. Most people probably don't consider the fact that Sandra Bullock hurling through space IS the story. They just think the filmmakers were trying to hook us in with a lot of explosions and an intense scenario -- that it's one small part of a larger story. Maybe I'm out of touch though.

I am very interested in a story about a woman's very likely final hours as she tumbles through space, the planet Earth receding into the distance. I don't know how Cuarón will make this work, or if the film will insert anything else into the story, but the concept has me hooked.

Iron Sky - nazis that have been living on the dark side of the moon since WWII plot their return to earth and finish the job. This movie has a lot of fun running with it's off the wall concept. Worth a stream. 7/10

Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - follows Lincoln in his journey from vampire hunting youngster to vampire hunting president. This movie does not have a lot of fun with it's off the wall concept. Takes itself way too seriously, is just an effects laden braindead popcorn movie. 3/10

Man of Steel 6.5/10
The first hour or so was very intriguing, had me hooked and then everything after was just another action movie. Downer. Near the end I was actually checking my phone to see if it was close to the end or not.

I saw the Gravity trailer in theaters, and well, I had a little sweat across my nose lol... I don't see how anyone could laugh... Yes there's no way she could be rescued going at that speed, but it's a movie.. looks interesting

That Guy... Who Was in That Thing 8/10

Documentary about the ups and downs of character actors (the guys who move the plot along). I had quite a few laughs, and there were some sobering moments as well. Being unemployed for years, going from broke to rich back to broke in a short amount of time, planning their life around living off of umemployment etc etc. For some reason it reminded me alot about poker.

Honestly I thought these guys were well off, pretty successful and happy, put this painted a dif story. and I ended up imdb the guys afterwards and idk, alot of the guys on the doc have had pretty steady work.. and I remember someone whining about only making $2,750/wk instead of like $40k/wk and for some reason I instantly thought "first world problems", but whateve

Finally saw Before Midnight last night. Wow, what a beautiful film. I'm American and my wife is from Germany so I found a lot of the situations and conversations directly relatable (so relatable, it was scary, at times). It's an emotional roller coaster ride full of sharp, personally drawn insights and ugly, beautiful truths. I really loved this movie. Like a favoritve song, it hit all the right notes at all the right times.

Very smart and well-directed effort by Linklater. From the pacing to the decision to set the story in Greece... intelligent, confident filmmaking. What a great way to end the series. See it immediately!
