Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I don't know how Now You See Me can have bad ratings. I really thought, as well as others, it was one of the better movies out in awhile.
06-05-2013 , 01:09 PM
The trailers didn't do much to get audiences excited. I only went because my brothers wanted to go so I tagged along (had another movie to watch that night anyway)

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Morgan Freeman acting like a condescending *******, Eisenberg playing magic Zuckerberg and Harrelson stealing the show every time he showed up. Ruffalo is also very good.

I hope Now You See Me is good, but the trailers make it look positively douche.

Yes, douche as adjective.
06-05-2013 , 02:01 PM
why not the commonly accepted douchey?

Ethan Hawke's did a recent AMA on reddit: Ethan Hawke AMA

Lots of movie talk obviously, especially re BEFORE series. Good read.

More classy

That has got to be the worst formats for trying to read something I've ever seen. It's impossible.

The Call (2013) - 6/10

Really fast paced thriller which was good for the most part until
Spoiler:
the lol decision of Halle Berry's character to go looking for the girl by herself and then the even more terrible ending of them leaving him there tied up.

Michael Eklund plays a really convincing psychopath.

Pain & Gain (2013) - 7/10

Thought it was really good but had the same feelings as I did post Alpha Dog when I realised it was a true story.

Side Effects (2013) - 9/10

Probably the best movie I have seen in recent memory. I am a huge Rooney Mara fanboy, though.

Fast and Furious 4 and Hangover 3 were both okay, not great.

All About My Mother is very good, not the best Almodovar I've seen but yeah worth watching. 8/10

Synecdoche, NY seems overly indulgent, to the point of absolute tedium; no me gusta. 2/10

Behind the Candelabra is knocked right out of the park by Douglas; truly a brilliant performance. As for the movie it seems to fall short of great, missing something or another, shrug. Worthwhile though. 7/10

some things i've watched that i like, Sunshine, Moon, Solaris
Silent Running (1972), oldie but goodie
2010 (1984), more straightforward than 2001 but entertaining
Apollo 13
The recent Battlestar Galactica series, almost entirely in space
Firefly

If you extend that out to movies/shows that take place off-Earth (and not necessarily mostly in space) the list is way longer.

There's not enough good ones, probably because space might be limiting as a backdrop to a lot of directors. There's a lot more in print if you were to read especially short story collection.

The poster-movie for Love It Or Hate It (possibly tied with Dogville, which I despise).

Love Synecdoche, NY. It's so miraculously sad somehow.

Are any of you posting Top X lists at the halfway mark of 2013? I'm hating this year at the movies =( Tuesday could be amazing though: Frances Ha, The Kings of Summer and Before Midnight.

Finally watched Half Nelson this week. I thought Gosling played it well, and I actually loved the limited interactions between Gosling & Mackie, the latter playing counter to how the movies usually portray the neighborhood drug dealer. The fact that they both thought they knew what was best for the girl, despite neither being a good role model, was a really interesting part of the movie.

I may go on a legit killing spree!

For weeks my local movie sites have said Before Midnight was starting today. Today comes and it says sometime in the next few weeks.

What's the most movies you've watched in one day?

I was wondering because I just worked out, I watched 6 movies today, and it's been years since I gorged on movies like that. If anyone cares, they were:

Scream Blacula Scream
Monster Squad
20 million miles from Earth
The First Men in the Moon
Evolution
Ghosts of Mars

We did a hibernation once back in '99 and watched 14 movies over 2 days. Only left the room to go to the washroom and get drinks. Set up a pulley system outside my buddies upstairs room. Got the pizza delivery guy to even pick up some VHS' for us at the local video store, and had him blow a whistle that was placed in the bucket of the pulley system. We pulled up the goods, and sent down the cash.

It wasn't the highest state of our lives, but it was pretty fun. Trying to remember some of the movies.

A Fish Called Wanda
Pure Luck
hmmmmmm, that's all I can remember. I'll have to talk to my friends to see what else was on the list.

I watched McKenna's Gold on TCM today. It is an absurd 1969 Western starring Gregory Peck and Egyptian Omar Sharif, playing a Mexican outlaw named Colorado. It seemed a little campy by today's standards. They're all hunting for gold in some legendary canyon that's holy to the Apaches.

Edward G. Robinson was great in a bit part as a guy who'd actually been there and had his eyes burned out by the Apaches as a result.

I was entertained. Julie Newmar rode along with them and looked pretty. Lots of other stars too. Give it a try.

I liked it. The theme of the movie varies throughout and other than a somewhat rushed ending I thought they did a pretty good job creating a smart mystery movie, like a modern Hitchcock film.

8/10
