Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

its not nostalgia. the original dumb and dumber is an incredibly hilarious and intelligent script about two dumb people. the sequel is a dumb, not funny script about two dumb people.

also the star wars example you gave could not be further from the truth either. im sure you will just brush this off with a " lol bgp is high on nostalgia" but i highly recommend the 90 minute star wars 1 review if you want to watch a hilarious analysis of why ep 1 is different from the classic movies.

Dumb & Dumber - 6/10

Better than the sequel. I guess.

That's probably 100% true. I was exactly in the target market when it came out of dumb high schoolers watching dumb movies so they could quote them to their dumb friends. But yeah, this one never clicked at all. For Farrelly brothers I'd rather Kingpin any day, and for better Jim Carrey I'd go Ace Ventura. Madness, I know.

I'm only like 90% sure I saw Dumb and Dumber (20 years ago) and, if so, didn't like it much.

Agree. Once I turned 15 fart jokes lost thier impact.

I saw Dumb and Dumber once. That was enough. Kingpin is ten times funnier.
02-25-2015 , 02:05 PM
LOL @ D&D haters.
02-25-2015 , 02:12 PM
Kingpin is good. Still has some not great stretches.

When making a comedy, if possible, get Bill Murray.

dumb and dumber is a 9/10 for me.

Wow. I get that comedy is subjective, but I never realized there'd be that much of a divide over Dumb and Dumber in here. It's not my #1 (Strangelove), but it's pretty darn close at #2. Happy Gilmore is right up there too.

You have to go way down the list before you get to another Carrey comedy, and keep on going for even longer before you see Sandler again on my list.

ya it's not nostalgia I rewatch dumb n dumber all the time and still find it amazing, whereas there are plenty of other movies I loved when I was younger that I remember fondly but have no interest to watch again.

sounds like you might have some personal beef with d&d.

I mean its flat out disingenuous to characterize d&d that way.

we have very similar tastes apparently.

dr strangelove n dumb n dumber are at the top of my list as well (along with the big lebowski).

dom,

kingpin is absolutely amazing as well. the greatness of one does not detract from the greatness of the other. the farrelly bros had an amazing string of comedies including something about mary and me myself and irene.

I didn't realize until recently how amazing of a singer she is. I always thought she was just a sideshow.

I was in the car last year listening to a replay of an appearance she made on Howard Stern from 2012. I got to my destination and stayed in the car to listen to her entire performance. It was at that point I realized she was pretty incredible (the story of what the song is about is very moving, as well):

I appreciate the dumb humor in the Farrelly brothers' Kingpin so much more than in Dumb and Dumber.

The reason why I did not like it that much is that I found it really hard to believe, for instance, I hardly doubt that theres a professor remotely similar to J.K Simmons character irl, at least nowdays.
Also I found it really hard to emphatize with the main character, his cocky ways were just ugggg

I still find it a good representation of how hard is the road to success and how much sacrifice it takes to make it to the very top of any field in life. It inspired me a lot to keep on pushing my poker dream.

Ended up giving it a 6/10. Music and J.K Simmons acting were the reason it was not an average 5.

Also watched Gummo the other day. I loved Kids by Korinne and expected something somewhat similar, but Gummo is a whole different thing.

I like movies that make me feel something, whatever that is, and Gummo achieved that. I found that most of the characters were taken out of nightmares, and the film had that spooky tone all over it.

At some point I thought that all of them were dead

Even though I like indie movies, I prefer them with more plot. Nevertheless, I read after watching it that some characters were real, and most of the situations were filmed with no actors and on the same houses the people lived. This crossover between film and documentary gives added value to the movie, but still didnt fullfill my expectations. I think I gave it a 4/10 since It was hard to digest for the most part and found myself checking how much time was left a couple times.
I think its supposed to be more like Black Swan, not a realistic insight into what it is like when attempting to be elite at something, but rather a deliberately hyperbolic/over the top representation of the psychology of it.

It's not often that I ask a film for LESS character development on the main character. Honestly, this thing was great in every way EXCEPT for digging into Grace's background and giving her a motivation for every thing she did. But the acting is master class, and if it doesn't tug on your heart strings then you are probably made of stone. And if you are made of stone, you shouldn't be reading film reviews on the internet anyway. Go back to your stone cave, stone boy.
Why not?

When Woody saws off the horses legs, I lost it.

Kingpin is definitely better than Dumb and Dumber for my tastes but D&D is still brilliant and hilarious.

"These Rocky Mountains don't seem so rocky to me"
"Yeah, that John Denver is full of ****"

Both movies throw a bunch up against the wall and some works and some doesn't. Both are terrifically funny and I put them at the very top end of what I call my second tier of comedies meaning they aren't in the top 25 but just outside.

Kingpin is great, and if someone (with inferior taste) claimed it was a 6/10 I'd be just as perplexed
