Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Great list. Lots of those look interesting. I'm convinced now of seeing Grand Budapest Hotel. The Tribe also sounds fantastic.

The Purge Anarchy - I love dystopian concepts, but this was very poorly orchestrated. The first was better, which does not say a lot. Are we supposed to care about the characters? The whole idea around such films is getting to know the people and caring about their lives. There is no depth whatsoever to any of the characters, other than a mysterious avenger who helps others stranded. Boring.

Under the Skin was pretty great...I still think about it after three months.

Not sure if it was correct to call this a box office bomb - it only made it to 73 screens, and even that was only for two weekends. 9 weekends total, $423k total revenue. This was a low budget film, and I can't find an actual production budget figure, but they have to have spent more than $423k on it.

Why?

I enjoyed it, but wouldn't put it on any best of lists, mostly because
Spoiler:
the plot just rapidly stops making sense after the train track scene. Mostly because almost all of Richard's actions don't fit in with how the character has already been established to that point. Richard coming back from home to help murder the snuff film guys is probably the most egregious example. Ben/Jim I can accept doing that, but Richard deciding to violated my suspension of disbelief.

I thought the acting was good, but the decisions that Richard makes and the actions he takes post-train track scene are just too unbelievable, considering the character they have constructed to that point.

<shrug> Made sense to me.

I just thought it was a great movie. It was constantly surpassing me.

Grand Budapest Hotel is Wes Anderson's best movie in a long time. Maybe ever. It's unusually plot-heavy for an Anderson film, which really works well in curtailing the excessively affected cutesyness that some of his films suffer from. I've always loved the sort of weird parallel universe that Anderson's movies seem to take place in, but it can be a bit much at times.

Unbroken was quite good. It's an epic triumph of the human spirit type movie, although not exactly 'feel good'. Relatively unknown cast all did a good job. Well paced, it doesn't drag. It is exactly as advertised. If you think it looks good, you'll like it, otherwise you won't. 7/10

I finally watched The Seventh Seal which was an interesting change of pace from all of the Christmas movies I have watched in the last week or two. Despite the dreaded subtitles I thought it was worth watching. I must have been mistaken though as I thought it was an Ingrid Bergman movie but I never saw her? Anyway I thought every scene with the Knight was great and every scene with the Knight and Death to be riveting. The rest was pretty boring I'm glad I finally watched it but I doubt I ever visit it again.

Oh yeah I watched Labor Day last night, don't ask why. It is unbelievably terrible. 1/10

Slither A man gets bitten by an alien. I really don't want to give too much more away.

This is an absolute MUST SEE if you haven't. Campy alien horror fun from beginning to end. They throw everything but the kitchen sink into this and then they toss in the sink. Once you think you've seen the greatest thing ever, something better happens.

This is a re-watch for me and it was as much fun as the first time around.

Her (not the actress) husband Ingmar directed it.

That's right! I always get them confused. Their kid Dave used to play for the Detroit Tigers.

Mrbaseball,

In a while all you'll remember are the knight and death and it will all be great.

Ingmar Bergman directed. Interestingly, his wife's name was Ingrid, but she was not the Ingrid Bergman.

Slow pony, but they weren't married.

Damn internet! All I was trying to do was make a joke

Ingrid did marry a director, Roberto Rossellini and have a daughter, Isabella.

I once directed a porn chick named Isabella Bergman.

Life is a circle.

I'm pretty sure Isabella is hot and I saw the granddaughter on some talk show and she is way hot too. Good genes

Next gen is a model. Hot, but not quite Isabella or Ingrid imo. They are both very very nice and when I hear their accents, super hot.

The Equalizer- Maybe a 6 , but prob in the high 5 range at best. Denzel is my favorite actor and I like several previous films of the director, and this was a beautiful looking movie for blu ray and stuff, but the story never really develops to where I could find a way to give a **** about a single character and just didn't flow/develop at all. Like the poorest version of Man on Fire they could have come up with. A total pass

I think Ingrid was a better actress than Isabella because Ingrid often seemed to hold things back and keep a reserve. Isabella was always way out front with the emotions.

Not that I know anything about acting.

This. Don't watch Gummo.

And Equalizer was ridiculous but entertaining for the most part. Denzel pwns a lot of noobs. That's pretty much it.
