yep this is his best performance IMO. The Rock stole the film and he went up against heavyweights: Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie. It was nice to see Ed Harris show some support for Bay too, he did a fine job.

Bay's best since Armageddon.

Wahlberg is an acting heavyweight?

Primal Fear

I love Ed Norton

Within his class of actors.

Super 8

I really like the kids and the whole 80s setting and style but I thought the story it's self was a bit weak and slightly rushed. I loved the kids movie after the credits and I think id have preferred to see more of them shooting films and hanging out and less of them battling aliens.

I would agree with this. He has much more capacity for comedy than most, and he gets a general bump just for Boogie Nights.

Plus he gets the joke.

Wahlberg is brilliant!

Love this movie

I'm surprised you guys enjoy Wahlberg, I think he's pretty bad.

Walhberg is one of my favs.....maybe not in DDL class but has churned out some entertaining flicks:

Fear
Boogie Nights
Shooter
The Departed
The Fighter
Invincible
Four Brothers
Italian Job
Rock Star
Planet of the Apes
Perfect Storm
Three Kings

Plus cannot wait for Lone Survivor. Terrific book, btw.

Maybe Light Heavyweight, he's talented. Makes some bad decisions (The Happening for example) but stuff like Boogie Nights, The Fighter and The Departed make him more than Marky Mark

Into the Wild (2007): is alright. The best parts for me are his encounters on his way to Alaska. Can't help but think what a nut he was though to do this.

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957): just really really good. The relationship between Nicholson and Saito is great. Guinness is one of my fav actors of his period.

The Place Beyond the Pines (2013): certainly took a turn and headed in a direction that I did not expect which I think is really refreshing these days. It drags on a bit but the acting is pretty good outside of the kids which I thought seemed out of place. Saw it on a 2-for-1 pass anyways so it was between this, probably Oblivion, Pain & Gain. Happy enough with this choice.

Wait a minute, Planet of the Apes remake was one of the worse movies I've ever seen. I can't be alone on that.

This was the first or second movie I saw with Norton, I rented it not knowing anything about it and it blew me away.

Also, count me in as a Mark Wahlberg fan, even if he is in a bad movie he is never the problem. He might not be top tier, but actors like him are hard to come by, IMO he can really do it all, comedy, action, drama, thriller.

+1 as a Wahlberg fan. probably favourite moment of The Departed was his exchange with Baldwin in the meeting room. I think he's pretty much exactly what the funny beefcake type should embody in most films, I never really have a bone to pick with his acting.

You aren't, most of those films are just terrible.

Although I do like Wahlberg in The Fighter, Departed, Ted, and even though they were bad films, the Happening and Four Brothers.

Watching some trailers on IMDB.

Looking forward to Red 2, Man of Steel and White House Down.

Not a fan of Marky Mark. Just can't take him seriously.

yeah...

The happening was... well, happening.

NOT

MM is good in support roles as the straight man ala The Other Guys.

Just saw Pain and Gain and thought it was pretty outstanding.

Saw The Master, which I thought was very good. Especially liked Hoffman. I'll search the other thread, but don't remember it being talked about as much as ZDT, Django, and Argo even though I thought it was better than those films.

Also saw Ted. Liked it, but wouldn't recommend to anyone that doesn't like juvenile comedy and/or Family Guy.

To be fair, in an interview with Howard Stern, he derides The Happening as a mistake. He said The Happening is a film where not much at all happens. Easy for him to say in hindsight, but he also is usually very coy about saying anything bad about anyone he's worked with.

Oh believe me, I understand that sentiment. But the acting was simply god awful... spurned on my M Night? I would assume, but as an artists MM is the one that is responsible for line delivery, emotion and inflection.

Bottle Shock: A 2008 film about an upstart Napa winery that beat out of the French powerhouse vineyards in a 1976 blind tasting, effectively putting California on the wine map. Overall, a fairly good movie with Bill Pullman and Alan Rickman putting in strong performances. Although I felt it wasn't sure if it wanted to be a comedy or a drama.

I did however feel like the background music sounded extremely familiar to score for Sideways - I mean, there's like a handful of other California wine movies over the past two decades, and you need to use the same musical feel?

drags on a bit definitely. the movie is basically 3 connected storylines. i think it would've been better if they just followed one of the storylines rather than trying to mash so much into it. it was still good, and worth a watch, but i don't think deserving of the 83% on rotten tomatoes.

I love Family Guy (more-so in the past) but I couldn't even finish Ted...and I was watching it on an airplane...
