saw the jurassic park re-release in imax 3d the other night: it was fantastic. it'd been many years since i've seen the movie, and i'd forgotten how scary it is. the 3d conversion wasn't anything special, but the movie itself is a terrifically thrilling ride.

mars attacks is fantastic.

Lincoln was a bit disappointing.

DDL was incredible, the cinematography remarkable, the rest...

Meh.

The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans

I thought this movie was very good, probably underrated/appreciated. I think it might get more appreciation in the coming years. A predictable kind of plot done many times before, except done very well here in an original and funny way. Nicolas Cage is perfect for the role and the rest of the acting is good. A great soundtrack as well.

Watch the original Bad Lieutenant by Abel Ferrara, starring Harvey Keitel. It is absolutely marvelous.

All The President's Men

I loved this one. Redford cementing himself on my favorite actors Rushmore with Newman and Nicholson. Spot 4 still available. Dustin Hoffman was great in this flick as well. 1970ish-1976 has got to be my favorite period. I love historical / political / thillers so this was right up my alley.

Please add Robert DeNiro, NOT Al Pacino.

DeNiro is great and might be top 4 all time but he's not one of my four favorites. Top 10 though

Elysium will be the first time I go to a movie theatre in over a year. Movie is going to be fire. Some people were fortunate to get a 10 minute preview of it and it blew them away. If you liked District 9 you are going to love this.

Director:
Neill Blomkamp
Writer:
Neill Blomkamp (screenplay)
Stars:
Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley

PLOT: In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds

Quote:
Elysium is set a hundred years in the future, in a world where Earth has become overcrowded and dirty, all the inhabitants are unkempt. The wealthy reside in beautiful utopia inside an enormous circular 2001-like space station called Elysium orbiting around Earth. Matt Damon stars as a blue collar worker in a robot manufacturing plant for Armadyne, the devious corporation behind all of the corruption. The plot involves figuring out how to somehow get to Elysium. William Fichtner plays an Elysium exec who has valuable data he's after, while Sharlto Copley plays Elysium's sole security man - and damn does he look badass.

What defines this movie and makes the footage so awesome is the world Blomkamp has built. Instead of aliens (like in District 9), we get a world where robots are the superior species. There are robot police, robot escorts, mechs of all kinds, but they don't feel like CGI. They seem as real and seamlessly a part of this world just like the aliens in D9. He also establishes a fantastic dichotomy between the sleek, refined world of Elysium, and the gritty, brown, disgusting world of Earth, showing just how bad things would get if division of wealth in society continued to expand. Things gets really badass when Damon outfits himself with mech implants on his arms and legs to make him more powerful. That is the exact moment when shoot gets real.

Stoked for Elysium. I loved District 9.

Looks good. District 10 still possible?

Would only see it because if DDL. Hate Spielberg and the content itself really doesn't interest me either.

Elysium: 100 years in the future things are exactly as they are now. Matt Damon blows some **** up. The end.

I loved district 9 but something about Elysium is not grabbing me. The special effects look awesome though so it might be fun to watch.

The Painted Veil

What a great movie. It is a romance, but I'll be damned if it doesn't wallop you when you realize that's what it has turned into. The characters go through bitter twists a quarter of the way through, revealing their true natures and the coming conflicts they'll both have to overcome if they're to ever see a happy ending. I saw this back when it first came out and had forgotten how good it is.

Elysium looks like they all the good parts out of Battle Angel Alita, kept the rest, ruined the emotional impact, and then switched genders. The floating city looks exactly like Tiphares from the comic.

Not impressed.

To be fair, it takes a hell of a lot to impress you.
04-10-2013 , 09:25 PM
You impress me. No man-crushing, just saying what I think.

LOL

I'm probably the only person who thought, "Let's make sure this is a piece of crap!" I can confirm this is indeed a piece of crap. Not one redeeming feature about this movie. Okay, I was impressed with Demi Moore's plastic surgery, but is that a reason to watch a movie?

For the sake of transparency, I cut it off 20 minutes in.

I know this thread is "too mature" (too OLD) for horror films. If you have seen Evil Dead here are bullet points of some of the problems I have with the film.

Spoilers obviously!

Spoiler:
After watching the film I could not put a finger on why I did not enjoy this film. After a twitter discussion and further brainstorm here is my list:

The opening witch scene was bad ass! It set up the audience for what’s expected. The people are never referenced again in the film. A part of me expected them to return. The hanging rabbits would have been scary if the opening scene were cut out. People fear the unknown, but since the audience knows exactly what happened during the cellar reveal, our only remaining option is, “Oh cool that was from the opening scene.”

The opening act sets up characters with information we don’t need. Animosity between Eric and David? Why? It did not lead to conflict in the movie. The registered nurse, she gave Mia an injection to help her sleep, did we need that info for the medication and one line of dialogue? How about this instead? “I gave her some sleeping pills, she’ll sleep for three days!” David’s girlfriend is given nothing to do with no build-up and that’s fine. They should have done that with the rest of the characters.

Mia’s story is intriguing but they never do much with it. If Mia is a junkie, why let her grab a set of car keys and storm into her room? Why let her take a shower by herself? She’s acting deranged, whispering to herself and speaking about a woman in the woods. If that’s my friend I do not leave her side!

Why not check her into a hospital? Maybe this is my “socialist” Canadian side speaking, but I’m not sure a registered nurse and a teacher are qualified to help a junkie recover. “She’s getting the exact same treatment a hospital would give her!” That line served the exposition machine, a lazy plot device.

Violence against animals is a bold move. I’m alarmed there have not been activists out in full force regardless of whether an animal was harmed. Generally speaking, animals are taboo in the horror world.

The Book of the Dead cannot be burned, but people can scribble over markings and write their own English text in the book. Why does this make sense?

The book says, “DO NOT SPEAK THESE WORDS!!” The teacher clears his throat, decodes the book and immediately speaks the words out loud. Is Alvarez commenting on the teachers of America? Why not make this guy just a regular guy? Why talk about his profession at all if he isn’t smart?

The book is wrapped in a garbage bag and barbed wire. Is this designed to keep the book out of the wrong hands? The people in the beginning knew what they were doing. If they truly wanted to save that girl’s soul they would do everything in their power to prevent it from happening again. Dear in-breeders, your barbed wire and garbage bag didn’t work!

The deadites resembled zombies more than deadites. An attempt to tap The Walking Dead audience? Dear Mr. Alvarez, you didn’t need to do that, true fans bought in from the beginning. Let’s stick with the deadite template.

Whenever the deadites spoke it was out of place. “I can smell your filthy soul!” Wait, why didn’t you say that earlier? In the original franchise their dialogue and timing made sense. Whenever the deadites speak in the remake it’s as if Alvarez feels the need to throw in a nod to the original for the heck of it.

Remember the beginning of the film when the witch tells the man, “This is the only way to save her soul?” A teacher picking up the book for the first time discovers two additional ways to save Mia’s soul: dismemberment and live burial. Why include the “…only way to save her soul,” line at all? Sloppy.

Each infected person contracts the virus (zombie) by the following methods: rape by tree, ingesting blood from Mia and a bite from Mia. These methods follow behaviour of a traditional zombie with the exception of rape. Why did Eric re-animate after he died? When Eric came back a major rule was broken, he was not raped, bitten and wasn’t forced to swallow blood. This was the dumbest thing and took me out of the movie, pushing me further away from a sloppy mess.

On the topic, what a dick move by David, placing Eric face down in the water. Sure he’s dead but have the ****ing decency to lean him against the wall. If you’re a friend and you place my lifeless corpse face down in the water you better believe I’m haunting you til the end of your days!

Alvarez spoon feeds the audience because we cannot possibly follow along. When the first girl turns into a zombie we get a flashback of a page in the book which also reveals exactly what she’s doing to her face, removing any hint of a surprise/shock. When Eric is thinking about the book we see the book and specific passages. Thanks for the reminder!

Advertised as “The most terrifying film you will ever experience!” The film is not scary at all. This is coming from a chicken **** that won’t make eye contact with the following blu-rays in my collection: Paranormal Activity, Sinister, Insidious and The Shining.

Gore for the sake of gore. The second/third acts are frantic, giving the audience zero chance to absorb what’s happening on-screen. When Bruce Campbell hacked off his hand there was a build-up which delivered big laughs and a successful gross-out moment. When the nameless girlfriend does it there is no build-up. “Holy **** my hand!” Boom hand is gone. Why not do something with the possessed hand? Why not have it slap her around? Why not give the possessed hand time to play? Something fun/interesting before hacking it off would have been effective.

When Mia loses her hand it’s the nail in the coffin. Alvarez is handcuffed by the original franchise, serving it’s cause in choppy fashion. It’s a cool moment but it felt off. Before she uses the chainsaw she must lose her hand, here is how she will lose it.

The stinger after the credits served no purpose other than a cute nod to fans of the original. I love Bruce Campbell as much as the next guy but that was silly.

The Chaser

This is a must watch. I felt pure evil, absolutely pure evil watching this movie. When I think of evil, Kevin Spacey in se7en is probably one of the first things I think of lol but The Chaser surpassed it.

I loved how they captured the grit and unromantic stuff from both sides (prostitution, general scum / the police). Both sides are just an endless grind with little light at the end. Everyone's struggling, and even tho they are on opposite ends of the spectrum, they are trying to achieve the same thing...catch the bad guy.

Just my opinion, but I thought the movie kinda challenges societies views on what good/ evil, legal/ illegal really is. Where is the line? and is there actually even a line? Nothing new but I think The Chaser did a really good job...It's one of those movies where afterwards you feel lucky and grateful to be alive, and all the wrong stuff you might've done pales in comparison to some of the stuff in this movie.

I am probably the only person who thought "No way did Busto actually try to watch this movie. Busto is jerking us around."

For the sake of transparency, I had to Google this movie to find out what the hell it was.
