It was almost a mess, it won me over, then it full-filled it's destiny by becoming that mess. God bless. I would have rated it much higher if it'd ended about 45 minutes earlier.

Michael Shannon is always interesting, Amy Adams is a constant delight, and that Reeves look alike did well in the role as "dude with pecs playing superhero". The last part of the movie was destruction porn with buildings falling down killing thousands of people, yet we're supposed to feel relief when somebody played by a known actor gets saved.

More backstory, less 9-11 knockoff scenes.
5/10

Bad Grandpa - Lot of giggles, few guffaws. I think we're finally over this "candid camera" style of making a movie where you do awful things in public and you lean on unaware people's reactions for the humor. But that kid was pretty funny.
5/10
Most of Bad Grandpa was not very funny, EXCEPT the ending is outstanding. The way they stick it to those outlandish child mockers is fantastic. Watched it over and over again.

wrt the Lone Ranger: that was a ****ing abomination. as prolly the biggest Lone Ranger fan in existence when I was young I can't even express in words how terrible this movie was.
whosever bright idea it was to make the LR a bumbling ****ing idiot for 98% of the movie should be bitch slapped n never work in Hollywood again.
pretty sure whoever was behind TLR is also responsible for that awkward moment (which I obv haven't seen but was forced to watch a preview for which was ****ing bad enough).
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Disney. TLR could've been so epic (fwiw depp was good as always, everything else was TERRRIBLE n not even remotely true to the original canon).

/rant
That's the first time in history anyone has ever referred to the "original canon" of The Lone Ranger.

Agree with Dom on Rush including the racing astoundingly not being very exciting. Even real auto racing is better. Yeah, auto racing.

watched I Saw the Devil.

enjoyed this one. not huge plotwise but the violence is very crude and extreme and the characters are quite insane.

Spoiler:
laughed my ass off when he spikes the cannibal's hand to the table with a knife/screwdriver and later the guy tries to pull it out but he only takes off the handle but leaves the knife intact with his hand stuck to the table.

also the way he finishes off the villain was gold

I couldn't get through On The Road, and I really tried.

Hard Eight

PT Anderson's first movie, already shows promise of a meticulous career behind the camera and a script. Being a poker player, it is not hard to dip into a gambler's life and its pitfalls, even though the characters are heavily stereotyped. But God, that soundtrack is horrendous and seems to come out directly of the 80s! (even if this movie was done in the late 90s). Overall, an enjoyable gambling movie, but not a top tier one.

7.2/10

Understood. Was a disappointment after waiting for it for a couple of years... On The Road and Che both were (although the first part of Che is pretty good...).

Are you talking about the soundterack or the score? Either way, it's not fair to criticize a super low budget movie, when just a year later PTA employed one of the GOAT soundtracks.

(I thought the characters fine, I hated the Paltrow arc, but he was young)

This Spectacular Now while on the topic of of talented young artists, and I'm including the cast here, is a wonderful movie in all these little ways. If I were to explain the mechanics of the plot to you the thing is your eyes when start rolling and surely you would place this movie squarely in a box where it certainly does not belong. Plenty of movies have covered the same territory here but very few with such grace and humanism. If you want a plot summary go look one up. I suggest you just give it a look, with no expectations, with no preconceptions, and perhaps you can find the wonder I see here. 9/10

I had no idea what the movie was about it all going in :P

vix, did you watch Smashed?

Was just talkin about Matthew McConaughey in the TV Thread in regards to True Detective... has anyone seen Dallas Buyer's Club? I've heard great reviews. Thoughts anyone?

The Loved Ones was just very average. Meh is the only way I would describe it.

Ace In The Hole (8/10) . Wasn't a huge fan at first but its overall nastiness ended up winning me over. Leo's wife in the movie is not a pleasant person. And pleasant, but still nasty is Kirk Douglas (first movie I've seen of his btw, pretty good performance) who make some very interesting moral decisions.

seen 4 Wilders now, my ranks:

1) Witness for the prosecution
2) Double indemnity
3) some like it hot
4) ace in the hole

GB, I'd put these Wilder films, in order, on your "must see immediately list:

Sunset Blvd.
The Apartment
Stalag 17
The Lost Weekend

Others that are great:

Sabrina
The Spirit of St. Louis
Foreign Affair
Avanti
One, Two, Three
The Fortune Cookie
The Private Lives of Sherlock Holmes

He also wrote, but didn't direct, the classic Ernst Lubitsch film, Ninotchka

Shame on you for recommending Sunset Boulevard, noone deserves such evil.

I hope that's a joke. One of the best films ever made.

ty Dom. Stalag 17 is next. waiting for my roommate to get it on Netflix.

Drug War was pretty solid Hong Kong cop movie. Nothing spectacular, but worth catching on Netflix if you're into that sort of thing.

Loved the book, but it just doesn't translate well into a movie.

Speaking of which you know what would make one hell of a double bill: Ninotchka and One, Two, Three. In that order.
