No...The Searchers is one of those classics that has not aged well.

Footnote (Israel, Hebrew)

A comedy about father son jealousy in the field of Talmudic studies. At first I wasn't sold on it even though it has a great long shot focused on the father for the whole of the son's acceptance speech. But as the plot comes together the movie picks up. Overall I liked it.

8/10

Agreed. I can understand its role in the history of film but as a film it's pretty terrible.

Calling on diebitter...

Okay, so I saw this picture and thought holy ****, this is one of the best Batman costumes ever made. Had to check it out and cross my fingers this was a leaked screen test for the upcoming Man of Steel sequel.

And then found out this is from The Dark Knight XXX, which, from the trailer, imo looks like it could be 100x better than the original...

You want me to argue why you are wrong when calling a highly regarded classic movie terrible? Surely you can find numerous resources supporting its acclaim. Were you to actually present some arguments yourself, I would probably try to address them.

The op made all the relevant points. I added that its hideously racist as another reason to dislike it.

OP didn't claim it was terrible, you did.

points OP made:
1. he didn't get it
2. annoying characters
3. gorgeous sets, some sets very bad though
4. didn't like the narrative

You think its racist. Sorry, you got to have better arguments when calling a movie of this caliber terrible.

TV is own and Looper is just starting... You know something will be wrong with the structure of the movie when the first words are "Time travel. It not has yet been invented." I do not need to explain myself, do I...

As far as sci-fi movies in the past few years that do not reach their potential but still remain good :
- In Time
- Limitless
- The Adjustment Bureau

I feel that these 3 failed in meeting their sky high potential, but I still take pleasure at sitting down and revisiting them. As for Looper, I am about to walk away right now.

How is that a good Batman costume, let alone one of the best of all time?

I didn't see Looper, but In Time was terrible all over, Limitless was OK in places and Adjustment Bureau was so bad it made me miss Inception (and I HATED Inception).

I am sucka for sci-fi and these 3 movies mentioned failed in many ways, but I still enjoyed/enjoy them, which says a lot about me not liking Looper one bit. But do not get me wrong, they have been WAY superior sci-fis in the past decade... Off the top of my head, Moon and Sunshine being up there. And loved Inception.

I just think Hollywood has struggled with sci-fi films in the last decade or so (although there are exceptions like Sunshine as you pointed out). This is especially true for the time-travel genre, I can't think of any decent time travel films that were made after the 1980s, anyone got any suggestions?

A few of them. Most noticeable, 12 Monkeys. Time Bandits in there as well, albeit more of a sci-fi comedy. Donnie Darko. Star Trek, even if this figures as a theme, the whole premise is based on time travelling. Primer. Groundhog Day, although this might be time-stagnant and in the same flow, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Terminator and The Time Machine, both decent movies.

The Searchers is a great movie, IMO. Only the stuff where they come back to the ranch is hokey, but even then, only parts of it.

John Wayne talking to the old lady is chilling.

It's not a film reveling in racism, it's a film about humanity overcoming bigotry, how the warrior is necessary for making civilization even though her can be no part of it, and about the different aspects of masculinity. And more.

ESotSM? Not time travel imo. The action plays out the same sorta, but still, it's pretty different.

12 Monkeys, Time Bandits, The Terminator, and Groundhog Day are not "decent" movies about time travel. They are AWESOME movies about time travel.

The Adjustment Bureau as I recall was fine, but like (thought not quite as much) The Time Traveler's Wife and (probably) About Time it was kind of a trick to get dudes to see a chick flick.

Minority Report! AI!

how the hell did no one mentioned these?

The Searchers is still on my mind. Here's some thoughts about it I posted a few years back:

It's extraordinary in the theme it tries to explore given its main actor and time/genre in which it was made (I guess it could be called the theme of 'exorcising your own inner demons'), and I find the closing shot of Wayne, having done his job, and in a sense saved himself, choosing to walk away alone and be shut out forever while his family (and maybe 'civilisation') rejoice. He chooses exile rather than joining, as he knows, I think, he is tainted and the best he can do for them now is leave them.

I also never saw him as completely bad to start with. For example, he saved Jeffrey Hunter as a boy from the indians for instance, and surely then would have seen the boy as also 'tainted' perhaps, and yet he brought him back too. This seed of goodness finally blossomed, I guess.

I find this an entertaining and quite moving film, and you need to see it if you haven't already. The closing scene is one of the best in movies, ever!

Plus some of the shots... wow.
