Just saw Side by Side. Loved the film and found what the directors, DOPs had to say very interesting. But god damn it Keanu Reeves did you have to narrate and present it?

His dull monotone voice combined with awkward phrasing almost made it unwatchable.

Keanu was fine stop hatin! =p

I LOVED what Soderbergh had to say about film vs. digital. Wish I could watch with a purist and see/hear their reactions.

I haven't seen a film for a while now. No, I do not want your suggestions because I'm not interested either. Hope to read more of this thread than the last 2 I didn't open but once total, which is an average of 50% for each thread, but I can't half-open a thread, so I'll post here because why not?

You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. And look at you... I don't see an intelligent, confident man... I see a cocky, scared ****less kid.

Staying in nickel-diming Hyatt in La Jolla. Underdressed for free salsa dancing in the bar and the bartender messed up my aviation pretty badly (should have ordered a Corona imo)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is surprisingly (I guess?) quite a good movie. Whist predictable it is consistently funny. Drop the pointless voice over and I'd like it even more. Cast is superb. 8/10

Hope Springs obviously I have a thing for movies about old people this week. And once again sure its predictable but Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones attending marriage / sex therapy? Hard to screw it up. Just write whatever and let them shine. And they did. 7/10

End of Watch otoh lost me towards the end. It captured me from time to time, especially Pena, but thinking back I can't say.it was very good. Not terrible.either. Meh. 6/10

Total Recall was terrible. Colin Farrell seemed tolerable before but I think I'm going to have to start avoiding his movies. This movie was bad for lots of other reasons though and didn't need to be remade. I like most of Philip K. Dick's work, I've read a ton of it and have seen almost all screen adaptations as well, but they could just as well have rewritten the plot a bit more and created an entirely new (bad) sci-fi action movie. It's not as if the 80s movie was much more than a campy pseudo-classic in the first place.

Meh can't blame Farrell. He's an actor who needs the right role in order to shine IMO though. The whole movie is dreadful - this would seem difficult given all you need to do is the same thing Verhoeven made, lol. Somehow they took a fun, intelligent movie and made it dull. Bravo.

Just saw L.A. Confidential for the third time or so.

I maintain my view that it is overrated and generally crappy. I understand they were going for a particular tone, but to me it's just cheesy.

Ooh, Bud White hates violence against women. Oh jeez, Jack Vincennes is on Badge of Honor. Exley is square but learns etc etc.

Ask yourself this question: how good can a film be if they allow that awful acting by he guy who played White's partner Stensland?

I did find it entertaining his facial hair changed from scene to scene but he never actually managed to grow a full beard.

I only saw the second-half of the movie, but I was riveted. Then again, I like those actor-centric films. I really should watch it now if I can find some place that has it up.

That is an okay point if we're talking about nominations. As much as I love Titanic, did it really deserve to best Good Will Hunting for Best Picture? I also have lots of love for As Good as It Gets. But L.A. Confidential absolutely was the right choice for the Oscar it did win, "Best Supporting Actress." Here was the competition that year:

Best Supporting Actress
Titanic: Gloria Stuart
Good Will Hunting: Minnie Driver
L.A. Confidential: Kim Basinger
In & Out: Joan Cusack
Boogie Nights: Julianne Moore

The only one that I think gave any decent competition was Julianne Moore, and even that's colored by PT Anderson doing his thang.

Yes he is. He's a face actor - he can show you what he's thinking by facial changes and gestures, and does it brilliantly. Bob Hoskins is the same type of actor, and can do similarly great performances.
