Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

The Great Gatsby was much better than I was anticipating, thought it was pretty good. It is very highly stylized, cure for ADHD, etc, but you know that will be true purely on Baz behind the camera. Only major weakness is Carey Mulligan is always meh and nothing different here. No way Leo is all torn up over her.

This is pretty cool (and with background music from Requiem for a Dream!):

ugh i had to turn off the great gatsby after 15 mins.
i always give a movie at least 15mins but i could tell after 10 i was gonna hate it.
last 5mins were unbearable.

it's nice to see that someone was bored enough to actually take the time to construct a video illustrating Kurbicks use of a fully balanced fixed camera position in many of his signature scenes... but we really didn't need a cheat sheet to tell us that.

it would be like going to a race track and yelling at the top of your lungs... "Look, there is a race car!"

Inside Llewyn Davis and Oscar Isaac snubbed for Oscars

Finally got around to seeing The Hobbit. Pretty good but so many things that seemed completely unnecessary. I would have preferred all of the scenes that weren't focused on Bilbo and the Dwarves to have been cut. I didn't need to see Gandalf coming face to face with Sauron.

I have a feeling that much like the Star Wars prequels there will be quite a few fan edits of these movies floating around in a few years. Thankfully they are still good quality but I can't see any reason other than money for creating such a bloated story. Two 3 hour movies would have sufficed. Still I enjoyed it and it was my first time seeing a movie in 3D HFR and I loved it.

yeap... I am really surprised by the 10 each for gravity and hustle.

but every year the academy surprises me. are you sure Llewyn davis isn't pushed to 2015?

I also really liked the Please Mr Kennedy song from ILD. That got snubbed too.

Coen hate in this years oscars imo

None of the songs for Inside Llewyn Davis were original songs, none were eligible.

It's too bad because the music is great.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Listed as a comedy but without the punch lines this movie still won me over. It sets its own world and vision and never leaves it. At the end I felt like I had watched a novel brought to the big screen.

8/10

a novel about nothing that has been written many times before

While I whole heartedly disagree with the bad rep that Life is Beautiful is getting (and no, it does not mock the Holocaust, IMO, for the fantasy dimension of the movie is introduced from the get go), it got me curious and I looked up a list of overrated movies.

And yes, I agree that Blade Runner is overly hyped, but not No Country for Old Men. Contrary to the author of this list, I like the anti-climatic ending, for the relationship that the characters have with the land is FAR more important than a final showdown. And putting 2001 on this list, come on! Anyhow, still an interesting list to share, even though I disagree with it...

Actually, if you ask me, Titanic has to be the most overrated movie of all time... But I never made it past 10 minutes...

whoever wrote that list, i hope wrote it for money, because if it was written earnestly its author is disturbingly stupid

Yeah, so the love story of Titanic is really trite and Cameron is definitely not very good at dialogue. But I feel like the pure spectacle of the crash and the boat sinking is definitely worth a watch. It's on such a grand scale, how can you not be awed by it, at least a little?

Hating titanic is so boring. It's not nearly as bad as the "cool" haters like to pretend. It's no masterpiece but it no disaster either (see what I did there!).

I haven't seen it, for I couldn't make it past 10 minutes of Dicaprio cheesy love story. But I do not think I am missing out that much...

I cried when Leonardo sank into the water... but then again, I've only seen the movie one time and I generally fall apart when simplistic overly cliched love is illustrated on screen.

true story^

Maybe. But taking out one the most successful movies of a overrated conversation would be plain silly. I think James Cameron is probably one of the most overrated director as well (up there with Oliver Stone). That being said, I might have to go Titanic another try...

Titanic is worth it just for the sinking scene , but its been 15 years not sure how well it holds up .but yeah its not a bad movie by a long shot .
