By the way, you guys seen Human Nature, also written by Charlie Kaufman? Great funny-well-thought movie. I need to revisit it.

Her is not out here for a month!

Going to see 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle in a row tomorrow, looking forward to it.

Holy ****, Dom. I was already dying to see it. Bravo.

Lol, you guys mock chick flicks and then name as your best movie of 2013 what is effectively a chick flick. So ridiculous.

who mocks chick flicks in this thread?? It might be used as a derogatory term for a bad romantic comedy, but certainly not as deriding a whole genre.

Let's see, some of my favorite movies include The Three Colors Trilogy, The Princess Bride, the Before trilogy, In the Mood for Love, I Am Love...

Yes, I can see why you'd think I'd mock "chick flicks." I'm obviously a Michael Bay fan.

So Hobby, you're just going to be 100% troll now, is that you plan? Well done. Way to contribute to the conversation.

It's like you read a completely different thread. Oh, to have a pair of Dom-colored glasses...

I'm confused...are you calling these movies chick flicks?

If troll means calling out the bull****, then yup. I'll wear my troll badge with pride. And not agreeing with you =/ troll, for the record.

I'm still waiting for the "conversation" part to begin. Because the instant anyone actually begins any sort of discussion that isn't 'oh yeah you're right, great movie', then people shut it down with all of this 'troll' nonsense.

Well, to pursue the chick flick dialogue... I a not one for those cheesy romantic comedies, but told myself that there probably was a few out there worth watching... and went on a curve and watched a few, and was pleasantly surprised with :

When Harry met Sally

Watched it again (the first time was when I was a kid) and is a decent flick, especially with having the polarizing male/cynical versus female/chirpy dynamic.

7.4/10

Can't Buy me Love

Who doesn't like a teenager movie opposing nerds to jocks!

7.1/10

Reality Bites

Not a fan, but does depict well the soul searching youth of the 90s

6.8/10

Liberal Arts

Guy that does not want to grow up and at 35 falls for an 18 years old girl... Questions himself and life in his eternal soul searching quest. Enjoyed it.

7.8/10

Silver Linings Playbook

Was impressed with the interesting/neurotic personalities of these lovers. Does not fall into your typical prince charming meets Cinderella line.

7.6/10

And a few more :

Annie Hall

One of Woody Allen's great early piece.

8.4/10

Little Children

What seemed to be a typical chick flick with interesting characters turned out to be ****ed up and more than expected... Movie left me shocked, as I did not see this coming. Solid movie. Worth a watch, just be patient with it.

No, I'm not, because I dont use that term. I find it derogatory and simple-minded. To both males and females.

Wow, so much better! I feel like I've had a painful bunion removed. Or maybe a bunch of useless skin tags hanging off my ass.

elainemonster,
Is that you?
01-11-2014 , 04:47 PM
I can shoehorn many movies into the romantic comedy realm without them being chick flicks... I think that one is a slippery slope.
