There's so many references to other films in each of the movies which is also a bonus.

I mean wow, I'm moved. I'm inspired. I want to help lol but i have no idea how. If there was any way I could move to South Korea and get some itty bitty tiny part in the production process I'd do it.
Don't start watching the horror films. They're awful through and through.

Dave, Korean horror movies can be amazing. Case in point: The Eye.

And LOL at calling Casablanca over-rated.

I'm perfectly ok with this although I haven't watched it so couldn't add much to our sewing circle.

Am I the vaguely ethnic one? Racist!

Is white an ethnicity or is it the bench mark?

Mother

Korean Thriller about a ******ed boy who is charged with murder.

Kind of slow moving and a little unengaging. Interesting if you want to see the details of small town Korea and the lives of working class Koreans. The plot was also unexpected in a good way.

What were you expecting that you didn't get? Just rewatched it and it delivers on every level.

I'd give my left nut to be as cool as Bogey was.

Ok, lets see here,

I tried searching for Tazza: The High Rollers
but didn't find anything. It's probably my second favorite Korean movie behind Villain and Widow. It's got a lot of action, the extremely sexy Kim Hye-soo (love of my life), and the plot revolves around underground gambling. Rates right up there with The Thieves. Worth a watch if you can find it.

Thirst Horror
Wasn't into it, but that's because I'm a wuss. Don't want to spoil anything but if you like lots of blood and vampires then this movie is for you. It's really dark, and gritty, and gloomy. There was a scene that was really intense and I couldn't watch anymore cuz i thought it was gross.

Spoiler:
When the priest tells his father he's a vampire, and how thats the only reason he's still alive, so his dad slits his own wrist to feed his son. It was really intense the way they shot it. Wow.

Kick the Moon romantic comedy drama
I'd give it a B-, It's about some old highschool friends, A PE teacher and a big time gangster that end up falling for the same woman (Kim Hye-soo). Has some funny parts, and Kim is sexy. The ending was a complete mess.

My Sassy Girl Romantic Comedy Drama
About a loser college student that meets his "type" on a subway. Was a little too sappy for me and it dragged on, but there were lots of funny parts and I think everyone could relate to the guy in some way. Worth watching if you're bored.

Hypnotized
This one stars, you guessed it, Kim Hye-Soo. It's about a psychiatrist who falls in love with a mentally disturbed patient (Kim). This movie had a lot of potential, why was she crazy? whats wrong with the doctor? whats going with the husband? there were quite a few things going on, but it sputtered out. I was expecting more. That said, the ending was ok in that everything kinda comes full circle and there's some sort of closure and justice. Kims huge tits make up for it. You can view it on netflix streaming.

Edit: Forgot one.

A Bittersweet Life Gangster movie.
Gangster movie that deals with moral issues. This movie was awesome. I liked it because most gangster movies try to portray the gangster life in a good light, where in the end all the gangsters go down HARD. Flaming ball of fire style (think scarface). Instead this movie deals with a lot of moral issues that revolves around money and power.

Spoiler:
The main message was the same as most crime movies. Money, power, and greed will consume you. Whatever goes up, must come down.

^

I thought it was clever how anyone who accepted their roles, never questioned authority, and indulged in the spoils of gangster life went down, but those that didn't remained, and it plays all throughout the movie. You don't see the main character indulge in anything, or accept bribes or skim off the top. In the beginning when his boss tells him to take some money for himself because "everyone does it", he doesn't even tho you can tell it was extremely tempting. Talk about discipline. Like he still had a moral compass and code of ethics even tho he worked for a crime family. Pretty cool. It's like being loyal was all that mattered to him, it didn't matter that the family was doing awful things, but once he got raped he realized what a ****ed up situation he had put himself in.

Yeah he was cool, I'll give him that.
I just felt it kind of lacked something. The script seemed a bit eh.
12 Angry Men though, now there's a captivating movie.

Also, with all the rave of Casablanca this, Casablanca that, and having heard about it since I was a kid, I just expected to blown away

Spring Breakers is some next level ****. Don't let the trailer fool you. It's the biggest bait and switch since Drive. I'm giggling as I read tweets about it, young audiences are completely missing the point of the film.

Spring Breakers is about a bunch of ****heads who do dumb **** and make terrible decisions. It makes audiences cringe and feel uncomfortable, the audience is supposed to squirm in their seats. It's starts off light, fun loaded with pedo shots of yesterday's Disney stars. Then BOOM Korine flips it upside down and ****s with your mind.

There were moments where I was laughing my face off then felt incredible pain and sorrow moments later.

It's a worthwhile film, I highly recommend it.

Searching for Sugar Man: I know some have had problems with the focus being more on the storyteller, however I thought it was very well done, how it slowly told the story before even introducing Rodriguez.

I saw Rodriguez play an Austin bar in 2009 as an opening act. I was like "who is this old Mexican dude on stage" (a strange sight in an indie music scene) - I thought he was decent, but now really wish I had paid more attention.

See my warning about 5 posts up-page...

****

The Woman

See the preview here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsUxrMyWXeI

And you can watch in on Hulu...

One of the quotes in the preview states "Disturbing and Disgusting," and if I could sum up this movie in one sentence, I would pretty much use those exact words, but with that, I have a difficult time figuring out exactly where on the disgusto-meter this movie lies. I would say it is somewhere just below Irreversible, Eden Lake, and Kids, but this one is most certainly up there.

Don't let the preview mislead you. The movie is mostly talking heads with just enough dissonance to keep you from completely throwing up. The ending was quite surprising and overall, it is a gory, disgusting, and utterly ****ed up movie. Definitely not a movie for the feint of heart.

I don't get it. Is Spring Breakers doing well, or not? My friend told me it was being expanded to more theaters, so I thought it was killing at the box office. I don't really follow trends in twitter/pop culture. Do the young people like this movie or not?

Personally, I loved it fwiw.

Saw The Magnificent Seven for the first time, which is a bit surprising as Seven Samurai is one of my favorite films and I've watched it at least five times. Magnificent Seven isn't nearly as good. I think a major problem with the movie is that it uses guns instead of swords. I understand that using guns well requires a lot of dedication/skill but it doesn't film well in comparison to the samurai's martial prowess. Also this loses out on several major themes in Seven Samurai such as when (arguably) the most talented samurai is killed by a stray bullet. This one scene packs so many themes into it: the death of the samurai culture, the rapid advance of technology, dumb luck bringing down skill and dedication.

I also thought Seven Samurai had much better and more defined characters, although that's bound to happen when it runs over an hour longer. Still it's such a large story with so many characters that it deserves that much screen time. I think the American version would have done better to cut down the characters and focus on them if they are going to cut an hour out of the film.

It was an entertaining watch, but certainly not the classic that Seven Samurai is. Wouldn't watch it again or recommend it.
The Magnificent Seven suffers terribly when compared to the original, but I think it's a fine Western on its own. The scene with James Coburn proving his mettle with the knife at the beginning is terrific, and Robert Vaughn as the drunk and aging gunfighter is also a standout. The director, John Sturges, has always been underrated, and the opening scene takes up one of the themes he explores in Bad Day at Black Rock, racism in America. And the score by Elmer Bernstein is a classic.
