Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Hunger games was really really bad. I can't imagine why any of you saw it unless you have kids (daughters) like I do. Thankfully my wife took them to see the new one.

----

12 years a slave - I know it is good, but I haven't been able to motivate myself to go feel terrible. I might just let this one go by.

I watched Of Mice and Men yesterday morning on TCM. It depressed me all day, plus it was cold and rainy here!

Don't tell me about those ****ing rabbits any more, George.

Which one, the Gary Sinise/Malkovich one or the earlier b+w version? Both are great imo.

It sounds like a canned pet food brand.

Old B&W, Burgess Meredith is George.

On my hit list this week: Oldboy (remake), Dallas Buyers Club, The Book Thief, Frozen and I'd love a second viewing of 12 Years a Slave.

I saw the first Hunger Games and have zero desire to even Netflix the rest of the franchise. I wouldn't say really bad, but there's not much there for the non-teenage girl audience.

12yrs is just a tough watch, but then great drama isn't always about walking away from the show and feeling good about life.

Of all the bad posts re: this franchise in the past few pages, this is the absolute worst.

I thought Hunger Games was awesome! When Wiress was going nuts with the "tick, tock" crap I was really tempted to say, "TELL THAT ****IN' BITCH TO CHILL!!"

Hahaha, nice

Apparently there are whole bunch of teenaged girls itt, myself included. Thought Hunger Games was good. Ending of Catching Fire was great.
Spoiler:
Dat look by JLaw

After a second viewing of Catching Fire I'm wondering if we're singing praise because it isn't horrible. I definitely felt the painful runtime the second time around and noticed it follows father exact same formula of the first: poor D12, boring/unconvincing love triangle, reaping, lol Panem is fabulous, hunger games, end.

Let's get this clear, I don't think it's magnificent, it's decent and enjoyable and x1000 better than any of the teen-lit movies we've seen so far (it probably doesn't qualify because not quite teen, but the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies are pretty good too).

Stanly Tucci is fantastic as the creepy compere dude, as was Lawrence as the amazon princess who had two drippy guys fawning over her, but I also liked Lady gaga, Woody Harrelson's decline into Nick Nolte, and the contestant that was like a buff cross between The Joker and Shaggy. The evil bleeding-at-the-mouth Santa was also good.

The secret 'plan' was ridiculous though

Spoiler:
at least in the book, someone actually told Katniss about the wire and the arrow, rather than it being completely convenient.

Agree with this. Thought Elizabeth Banks played a difficult role incredibly well, gave so much heart to that character. Really liked the scene where Finick offered the sugar cube to Katniss as well. Philip Seymour Hoffman did a great job too, so much added to the smaller parts by great acting.

If you enjoyed Gravity, here is the other half of Sandra Bullock's distress call:

Put me in the teenage girl camp. Catching Fire was great. Looked great, reasonably well written (extraordinarily so when you consider the target market) and fantastic performances at every role. Except for Peeta, who is remarkably uncharismatic, to the point where they had to rewrite his character from the book to make it work.

thanks for posting, that was neat. While I was watching GRAVITY, my mental image of who was on the other end was:

- some drunk old guy
- sitting in a small room
- messing around on a HAM radio
- with a dog sitting nearby

Surely Harry Potter counts as teen-lit.

Catching Fire - It was OK, very odd structurally though. I had to run out to the bathroom around 2 hours in, and they had just got put into the Hunger Games dome when I was gone, so we basically spent 2 hours on the pre-story with roughly 30 minutes spent on the games themselves. Definitely the mirror opposite of the first one....which enabled the first one to function better than this one. The games themselves didn't work as the climax of the movie bc 1) too short and 2) we didn't really get introduced/know any of the rival victors all that well so there were never any stakes raised. I suppose you could argue that the 'real enemy' was always Snow, but then why bother with the Hunger Games scenes at all? Also, Snow was not made out to be a big enough threat here...he's always just kind of lurking menacingly. Also, I thought that
Spoiler:
Cinna was killed in this book because of the mockingjay dress he makes for Katniss? Did I remember that wrong?

Also, I really didn't like Katniss' character here. She's always crying in this movie...and that I didn't really remember from the book. As she was portrayed in the book, one of her big problems is her lack of emotion and keeping her emotions internalized.

Watched Oceans Thirteen last night. Can't really decide if I like it or not. Abigail Sponder...what a cougar!

I've seen "Jack Reacher" several times now that it has finally appeared on TV for free... I have to say, I like this movie... I like it a lot.

certainly there are plot holes a plenty, but the JR character itself is really very good.

A grounded avenging angel with skill sets and no boundaries is something I quite enjoy watching...
