When I attended two film festivals recently, friends and family on Facebook wondered if I won a contest. "You interviewed Keanu Reeves? Did you win a contest?" No i did not! Rather than get annoyed I thought I'd write a blog post explaining what I do with my free time.

I'm proud to present "Film Writing - This is What I Do" give it a read will ya? http://ptjudgmentday.tumblr.com/post...s-is-what-i-do

just saw Kubrick's The Kiling. Great flick, as suspected by the master himself.

Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead 56/100 - Ridiculous, with some great ideas (a town of insane adults, gone mad by the absence of the murdered children) and some poor actors and dialogue (the bad actors get picked off early, thankfully), but doesn't quite gel. We have Freddy riffing on "modern culture" by playing video games and doing his version of the Wicked Witch, but the ending - obviously intended to be seen in 3D - is completely ridiculous and thoroughly entertaining. This is Freddy passing through an itchy and scratchy/looney toons filter.

About 1/2 thru The Counselor screenplay on Kindle

I won't give away plot spoilers below - but out of respect for those who don't want to know absolutely anything about the film going in - I will hide my comments concerning the structure of the movie

Spoiler:
it's going to be one of those movies where all kinds of stuff / separate storylines is going on without much explanation, I'm yet to see how much of it ties together. kinda like what I remember of crash (I know, awful comparison). the dialogue is pretty razor sharp ala mccarthy's no country for old men. very edgy and cool, and it sounds like there will be a ton of sex appeal in it. if it's word for word like the screenplay, there will be more than a few philosophical ramblings and humor. it's read much like a present-day NCFOM thus far

Judge,

I couldn't resist reading the first couple of pages, but I am one of those that wants to see it fresh. I for damn sure will finish reading the script afterwards tho.

Finished it. Should make a great movie. Very interested in how Cameron Diaz pulls it off... in more ways than one

Thought Gravity was visually incredible, but also instantly forgettable

Captain Phillips was damn tense. Greengrass and Hanks are in top form, but there's something missing that keeps the film from greatness.

The final 15 minutes were A+

I just want to add my -1 to Avatar. If I had a time machine, on my way back from killing Hitler I'd do something to stop James Cameron in 1995.

Smilla's Sense of Snow

I really wanted to see the film after reading the book. Disappointed to be honest. The film fails to establish the dark-ish atmosphere of the book. Probably give it a C+. Julia Ormond can be pretty hot when she wants to be.

The book is awesome!

I wasn't as enamoured with Captain Phillips as everyone else was. Tom Hanks was on top form and the other actors did a good job too, I just felt it was a bit too 'Murica, oorah!' for me. Maybe I expected something more neutral and I shouldn't have, or maybe I expect something that isn't designed purely for the average movie-goer, but I was disappointed. Solid 3/5. Good film for IMAX.

The Chase...

Brando, Redford, Duvall, Dickinson, Fonda, Marshall...

A very dry drama that is beautifully shot with no punches pulled in the storyline.

the movie revolves around morally corrupt towns people that intertwine with a convict trying to get to his lover.

Thanks for reading! Seriously you guys rock!

I purposely left out of the post the fact that Open Road Films asked me to sign off on pull quotes for Machete Kills. That would have been cool but they didn't use my quotes. Ah well! Never dawned on me that was even a possibility.

The Suspect 2013- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2073121/

stumbled into a copy of this the other day even though it appears to be unreleased and thus unable to be voted on imdb.. its a fun movie and reading the synopsis pretty much gives you an insight into the sort of fun (crime) thriller your going to get.

the story is told in present day combined with flash backs, that gradually reveal more of the (back) story. given that it is connelys first ever movie of any kind and he has written, directed and produced it i like, and when I look at this as some ones first attempt at making a movie rather than a hollywood blockbuster i can appreciate it more.

maybe even more so that since i have spent last month, script editing, producing and working on a 7 minute film aimed at tropfest.

Like all these sorts of movies, a few things happen off screen so they can be 'revealed' later which feels a little cheating but i wont complain too much. fun movie worth a watch but without ever being great.
Solid 63/100

I didn't think it was rah rah America and I'm not even American. If anything it was pretty sympathetic to the Somalis. Sure at the end the might of the US wins but it's then vs four guys with guns and ultimately it's based on fact.
