Never even seen the original, not sure if I want to see a new one, the premise doesn't interest me-I'm not even into Jurassic Park. Interesting that they are making a new one, is there any successful film series that Hollywood won't necromance?

mine have already been taken down...

how about this one?

pretty sure that link works.

Gravity was quite spectacular. I have no clue how they did that.

Loved Gravity. Perhaps a top five favorite theatre experience. Easily the most amazing CGI ever created. It's makes every big blockbuster look like crap. See it on the biggest screen with 3D you can. The plot may be average but the experience is amazing. This is one of those films that will almost not be worth seeing at home.

This is the first time since I was a kid sitting in the theatre watching Jurassic Park that I have been awed by the medium.

Average AT BEST... I usually hate movies rely on "the string of incidents" to further the story, but it... just... doesn't... matter!

Spoiler:
I fully expected an alligator to come out and try and bite her at the end.

Initially my opinion was that the movie was grossly miscast... but I didn't want to say anything before others had seen the movie.

Who would have been your perfect cast?

So after years of being told what a great movie it is and looking forward to seeing it, I finally watched Annie Hall.

Eh.

It's an above-average romantic comedy, nicely written and acted, got me laughing hard a couple times (Christopher Walken ). I did like Woody's examination of relationships, he really nails some deep issues. But on the whole...what exactly is so special about it? Did I go in with too high expectations or has it just aged?

Then again, I never was a fan of romantic comedies, so the fact that I'm calling this above-average says a lot

Xpost - Gravity

Was amazing. Possibly the most tense movie experience I have ever had, 5 minutes in till the end it's balls to the wall. Visuals were awesome, music was the type where you don't really notice it but it's completely enhancing the experience. Thought Bullock and Clooney were fine and overall it had few moments where it was unbelievable what was happening. Great movie, even with all the hype it delivered. Might not be a major Oscar contender because lol Academy but it should be.

Just fantastic.

Natalie Portman was originally signed on for Sandra Bullock's role. Haven't seen it yet. Please be using spoilers ITT if necessary, thanks.

Filth

The Irvine Welsh adaptations since Trainspotting have all fallen pretty flat. This, being one of my favourite books from the author was a film I have been looking forward to for ages and it did not disappoint at all overall, even if certain things didn't necessarily work as well.

The title has a double meaning, not sure if in the US it's the same but here a nickname for the police is the 'filth'. The film follows a cop in Edinburgh. He is a disgusting, nasty, horrible piece of work and James McAvoy plays him admirably. I would go as far as to say its easily the best performance of his career to date.

The plot follows our protagonist, Bruce Robertson an Edinburgh detective, as he goes about trying to solve a murder which will potentially lead to a promotion and simultaneously keep his life hanging together through constant drug abuse, shagging prostitutes, threatening people and basically you name it he does it.

The book is a bit like Fight Club in a few ways and the film does a completely different take on those similar bits, addressing the main character, Bruce Robertson's psychological issues through an hilarious Jim Broadbent playing an Aussie psychiatrist instead of the tapeworm from the book (which does however make an appearance). I enjoyed this approach but ultimately was a bit disappointed as the tapeworm in the book is an incredibly interesting literary device. I was careful not to be too married to the book as there is a tendency to hate the film/TV series of your beloved book solely on the fact it is different. The other big change is the ending, which actually changes the whole plot. This I also could not help being a little bit disappointed with as I thought the alternative was not as dark and impactful of that in the book and it completely changed the main character. I think overall they made Bruce a far far far (like 1000x) more of a sympathetic character than in the book, which seems weird given how much of a complete monster he is onscreen. I still wish they had gone the full way to see what the result would have been but they revamped it all the same and judged objectively it doesn't really result in a film that feels at all 'toned down'.

They got the humour levels just right, its sooooo dark, but you will be laughing out loud all the same. The quality of the dialogue is so high, full of typical Scottish humour complete with copious amounts of profanity and an incredibly morose outlook on life. There are recognisable faces here and all do a great job even when trying to put on the Scottish accent. Billy Elliot (and his da!) are on show, as well as moaning myrtle from Harry Potter fame and John Sessions who you may know from QI. Oh yeah and Imogen Poots is in it as well, overall its an impressive enough cast.

This film deals with prostitution, drug taking, alcoholism, infidelity, psychological trauma's, violence and pornography addiction amongst other ****ed up societal issues. Basically all the most horrible afflictions normally associated with the working class in the big cities. There are some very memorable sequences, scenes and bits of dialogue here. The Hamburg scenes were superb for example, if not a little bit too short. Wish they'd explored that a little bit more both stylistically and from a plot perspective. Its a mesmerising, trippy, dark, dirge, bleak yet utterly hilarious journey. I enjoyed it immensely.

8/10

Well, I cannot say, unlike many people here, that [BGravityB] was that great, but it definitely takes you on a ride. I mean, it is visually stunning, and Sandra Bullock manages to not kill the movie, but it doesn't reach the heights of Avatar, for instance. Still a theatre-must-see-movie though.

Serious Wtf. Avatar is a legitimately terrible film. It looks great but has already been forgotten and will never made a serious film list other than for its cgi.

I love George Clooney. Tom Hanks would also have been amazing.

I will take Jennifer Connelly every time.

Yes. Wow. To say Avatar was better than this...wow. Like we're living in totally different universes.

I am not saying Avatar is a great film - but definitely a good one -, but was amazing visually. All I am saying is that Gravity, while a great cinematic experience, is still slightly inferior to Avatar as far as the theatrical experience goes. Now, as far as criticizing both movies, that is a different subject all together.

Avaterrible.... GAK!

okay, okay, he was talking about visual effects here, not zomg how great avatar is compared to gravity. Calm down, don't get uncool and heavy imo.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Very entertaining, and works way better than it should, thanks to all the Freddy dream sequences, which are both creepy and fun in a grossout way. The acting in the non-horror bits is mostly abysmal, and the script is mostly poor, except a few rather great lines, but what really makes this work is the relish the filmmaker had with the character of Freddy. Easy to see why it inspired a franchise.
70/100

Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
62/100
The Good: Freddy Kreuger, some general hilarity around Freddy and some events, such as an exploding parakeet, and a gym teacher in a black leather vest catching a student at a very...unusual...club, and the final battle, that was Terminator 2 style 6 years before T2
The Bad: The lack of internal integrity (they ignore the fact Freddy acts within your dreams), some general laughably bad dialogue, like when the lead actress tries to convince the hero its his imagination....whilst he drips blood all over her floor.
The Odd: The main protagonist cannot keep his shirt done up, his friend seems to have black PVC bed covers, the protagonist's y-fronts

Nightmare on Elm Street 3 69/100 very solid entry, with good practical effects, special effects and story. Freddy cracks out some good lines.

Prince of Darkness 63/100 Not very scary and the music gets a little imposing, but some good ideas, cool jumpscares, and odd imagery.

Last Man Standing 63/100 reasonable, but inferior, redo of Yojumibo/Fistful of Dollars/Django but with gangsters. Fun to see Willis and Walken in the same movie.

Dead Ringers 67/100 An interesting suspense story from Cronenberg, with some interesting themes. However, the script wanders all over the place, and lacks the focus that would have made this truly effective. I'm glad I saw it, but I'll never watch it again.

Baba Yaga - 61/100 Odd Italian horror/thriller with S&M elements of a woman who is bewitched with Bab Yaga, an 'old' woman she encountered. Not bad, but doesn't really go anywhere.
