Fight Club (35mm, previous viewings were opening night and then DVD in 2001) - There's the germs of something decent here, but on the whole it's bad.
It does what a lot of art does in that it identifies modern problems - often problems of capitalism such as consumerism, bad office jobs, and general life discontentment - but then never suggests a solution nor even a coherent "wrong" solution. We're meant to be impressed just because a movie mentions "buying things from Ikea doesn't make you happy".
Fight Club gets messier by being male-focused, and runs into the problem that many movies have where the audience is sympathetic to points that are meant to be taken satirically.
ANYWAY
It's way too long, and it meanders, and there's unnecessary scenes and subplots. If you cut out a half hour you might have something here.
An important note about spoilers - Most of the audience liked/loved the movie I think, and what's especially noteworthy is that from conversations I could see going on afterwards, it was apparent that many of these people in their early 20s were not spoiled on certain plot events, and they were blown away.* This is why you don't go around spoiling things, even as a "joke" (it isn't funny anyway), even when you think those things are super cliche twists that "everyone already knows". There are always going to be young (or old) new film fans who could still have a chance to come at things fresh.
*Despite my dislike for the film, I'm pleased that they had a good experience like this in a theater 19 years later.
