I loved Birdman, especially since I taught the Raymond Carver story contained within the film numerous times. Shape of Water is well worth seeing but won't stay with me. Still, though, Sally Hawkins alone should make you want to see it.

I did not know this.

What the heck does Birdman have to do with Shape of Water?

Very little, I suspect, but the guy had a question.

I was trying to do a killer standup special this evening but I might’ve gone too far. After the first show, I felt kinda nauseous. I threw up a little but it didn’t seem to help. Then I started sweating buckets and my chest felt heavy. Turns out I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life at the #glendale hospital told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (also known as “the Widow-Maker” because when it goes, you’re a goner). If I hadn’t canceled the second show to go to the hospital, the Doc said I would’ve died tonight. For now, I’m still above ground! But this is what I learned about myself during this crisis: death was always the thing I was most terrified of in life. When the time came, I never imagined I’d ever be able to die with dignity - I assumed I’d die screaming, like my Dad (who lost his life to a massive heart attack). But even as they cut into my groin to slip a stent into the lethal Widow-Maker, I was filled with a sense of calm. I’ve had a great life: loved by parents who raised me to become the individual I am. I’ve had a weird, wonderful career in all sorts of media, amazing friends, the best wife in the world and an incredible daughter who made me a Dad. But as I stared into the infinite, I realized I was relatively content. Yes, I’d miss life as it moved on without me - and I was bummed we weren’t gonna get to make #jayandsilentbobreboot before I shuffled loose the mortal coil. But generally speaking, I was okay with the end, if this was gonna be it. I’ve gotten to do so many cool things and I’ve had so many adventures - how could I be ****ty about finally paying the tab. But the good folks at the Glendale hospital had other plans and the expertise to mend me. Total strangers saved my life tonight (as well as my friends @jordanmonsanto & @iamemilydawn, who called the ambulance). This is all a part of my mythology now and I’m sure I’ll be facing some lifestyle changes (maybe it’s time to go Vegan). But the point of this post is to tell you that I faced my greatest fear tonight... and it wasn’t as bad as I’ve always imagined it’d be. I don’t want my life to end but if it ends, I can’t complain. It was such a gift. #KevinSmith
He's such a good story teller.

I saw black panther and immediately thought of this thread since it was really good up until the final battle which was a complete nonsense mess.

The panther is like a leopard,
Except it hasn't been peppered.
Should you behold a panther crouch,
Prepare to say Ouch.
Better yet, if called by a panther,
Don't anther.

Best part was he was OK with dying. How many of us can say that our lives have been so good that if we died right now,it's cool?

It's probably a reasonable goal in life

Finally got around to seeing Shape Of Water this week... cinematography and acting were great but wasn't a big fan of the writing.... Birdman is way better

Probably another case of going in with expectations too high though.... need to make more of an effort into going into films with a blank slate.

Why the hell to peaple keep comparing birdmand and shape of water?
02-27-2018 , 08:05 PM
Ones about a bird and the other is about a fish??
02-27-2018 , 08:20 PM
Birdman is way better than Black Panther... I agree.

In that case Au Hasard Balthazar is better than both.

Because someone asked about the two. I would compare The Shape of Water to Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast if I were comparing. Birdman I would compare to...I don't know...Spirit of the Beehive for its magic realism.

I thought Annihilation was pretty bad.... but maybe I'm just too dumb to fully understand it. Still might rewatch cuz Natalie Portman was amazing as always,.. but just thought they tried to do way too much in a 2 hour runtime and I just wasn't feeling any kind of emotional payoff with any of the themes or characters.
02-28-2018 , 12:06 AM
I thought Annihilation could've done without the affair subplot, for sure.

The movie has not stayed with me at all. It's interesting but I don't think it succeeds.

Enjoyed Good Time (2017) on Amazon. Intense never dull 24 hours in the life of a tough guy manic New York City hoodlum trying every trick he can to save his ******ed brother from jail. Watch for the great overhead camera shots. Grade A imo

Exactly why the movie exceeds all expectations and becomes great. It's less about being smart and more about diverting away from expectation bias that envelopes modern western movie goers.

Somehow I thought they were directed by the same guy. I’m clearly just a donkey.

They are both Mexican, so partial credit.

Los Olvidados was filmed in Mexico by some French guy. We could compare that.
