stay away from the palms... at least for this particular viewing. there was something really wrong with the color saturation and image presentation. it was dull and uninspiring.

I am definitely gong to see it again at another location.

Pretty cool how spoiler tags don't work on my phone. I guess I'll wait five years to watch this now.

I should be more respectful of Dom's opinions: I hate anything with John Wayne in it, with the exception of Stagecoach. I've tried to like The Searchers since so many people whose opinions I respect like it, but it keeps getting worse every time I watch it. Drek.
Not a huge fan of John Wayne, but The Shootist is great. Think it may have been his last film.

The shootest IS indeed great... I love that movie. I am less of a fan of Peckinpah's work in this area.

Anyone seen Mute yet? I was really looking forward to this, as I loved Moon...but it is getting trashed by the critics.

The phantom thread - this movie tries to take a detached, dead pan look around a relationship between a famous dressmaker and his less famous ladyfriend. It was a good movie. But didn't quite work or at least doesn't seem like it worked to get anywhere. At times this was very heavy handed and reminded me one of those bugs bunny cartoons. Only because how everything is very, almost comically spelled out for you. People's reactions to eating asparagus are so over the top and a little disorienting as to how you are supposed to make sense of what you are seeing. Is there an argument taking place or are you watching people be absurd. As a result the movie theater audience to me was laughing at seemingly random and inappropriate times. What was dramatic to me, was comic to them. The movie clearly spells out that something ironic is happening and the dumb audience, while not exactly sure why this is funny, starts laughing unsure for a few moments. Here and there.

I liked the dresses. I liked the style. I liked how light this movie was on action. How much time it devoted to the characters. I just wish the movie was subtle, allowing the audience for themselves to think and figure things out. Instead of being fed cliche clues on which emotions to feel

I understand your criteria.

Best westerns no one has mentioned include Ride the High Country, My Darling Clementine, Broken Arrow, and Winchester '73. The final shot of Ride the High Country is especially memorable.

I like all the westerns Anthony Mann did with James Stewart, to throw in a few more.

Winchester 73
Naked Spur
Bend in the River
The Far Country
The Man from Laramie

I liked The Shootist, and probably liked some of his John Ford stuff. I can see that I was too quick to condemn them, but I've spent a lifetime being irked by his fans who can't seem to realize that he and his movies are fiction.

TDK - I don't browse this thread on my phone for exactly that reason. So brutal to get spoilered on a movie you want to see right as it comes out. I feel your pain, sir.

I was going to mention Anthony Mann and I was going to specifically mention Winchester '73. But fair's fair -- If I say that Seven Samurai and Yojimbo are Westerns, then I have to admit that I think all of Mann's Westerns are really Noir.

I don't know where to put Bad Day at Black Rock. It's has a lot of Western elements, except for the dates.

In some ways, Sturgess is more Noir than Mann. But Magnificent Seven, Escape from Fort Bravo and Last Train from Gun Hill are all worth a watch.

Also like 3:10 to Yuma and I believe I was one of the few who loved the remake.

My Darling Clementine is elite.

Annihilation ---Reminded me a lot of Sodebergh's Solaris, Definitely In that haunting/moody/ psychological/ sci-fi genre...beautifully shot, I had some issues with the plot and I felt that I liked Garland's Ex Machina more (very similar in tone/feel)...still great and I can't wait to watch it again

Yeah, this definitely came to mind for me too. I think it's closer to a western than any other genre.

I consider Bad Day at Black Rock a western also... it has elements of the Avenging angel, Samurai and traditional Western.

Cecil B DeMille's Plainsman is an amazing watch in terms of production value and detail when you consider it was made in 1936.

The movie Man of the West, featuring Gary Cooper once again, is a very brutal movie when taken in context of the era it was made... the 1950's

I love buddy movies like The Professionals and it features an amazing cast: Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Woody Strode, Jack Palance, Claudia Cardinale, Ralph Bellamy...

Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts 2018 (plus some non-nominated ones) - Nothing that great here this year. If you've seen these in other years you really know what to expect. There's an "edgy" modern re-interpretation of some fairy tales that you've basically already seen, there's the usual Pixar thing that played with Cars 3, there's an utter crap one with Kobe Bryant (scored by John Williams, animated by modern Disney "legend" Glen Keane) that is worse than most basketball Nike commercials and is of course the frontrunner (Hollywood really needs to be burned down).

Negative Space, done with charming real stop-motion models (or made to appear that way) is cool. Garden Party is good as well, animals wandering around a seemingly-abandoned tropical mansion that looks like it belonged to Tony Montana. Both are good and interesting mostly because they're not doing the typical type of animated short stuff.

I've never seen this. I'll put it on my list.

I like stories about the OK Corral; the best one I've seen was a TV docu-drama done in the style of Peter Watkins and took all its story elements from actual eyewitnesses. I can't find any record of it online, but it may have been called Street Fight at the OK Corral. (There was a "You Are There" episode about it in the mid-fifties, but it wasn't as gruesome as the one I'm thinking of.)

I didn't hate the Kobe Bryant one, but couldn't figure out why it was in there with so much other really good stuff.

Worth a watch imo

The shorts I remember seeing are mostly emotional manipulation. Kinda entertaining though.

And that making salsa one
