Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Ran across "Super" a 2011 film starring Rainn Wilson as a guy who mentally snaps(?) and becomes a costumed vigilante.

Ellen Page becomes his sidekick with her own problems and they attempt to save Wilson's wife (Liv Tyler) from evil Kevin Bacon.

It's dark, funny and offensive.

Kinda goes weird in a few spots, but all in all, a good varient to the superhero genre.

I've heard it compares to Kick-Ass, but I think it is better overall.

So I thought I'd rank Ridley Scott's features as a director:

Masterpiece:

1) Blade Runner
2) Alien

Great films:

3) Thelma and Louise
4) Black Hawk Down
5) Kingdom Of Heaven
6) Gladiator

Damn good films:

7) Matchstick Men
8) The Duellists
9) The Martian
10) White Squall

Interesting:

11) The Counselor
12) Legend
13) Body of Lies

Juuuuust a bit outside:

14) Prometheus
15) Alien: Covenant

Fun but meh:

16) Black Rain
17) Robin Hood
18) Hannibal

Just meh:

19) A Good Year
20) Someone to Watch Over Me
21) American Gangster
22) Exodus: Gods and Kings

Not good:

23) G.I. Jane
24) 1492: Conquest of Paradise

BR and Alien are probably in my top 5 best sci-fi films. Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, The Martian were incredible. Such a sick career.

Used my moviepass to rewatch The Last Jedi tonight and liked it a lot more the second time around. It's extremely well shot and the Rey/Kylo Ren relationship stuff is so good...Still had the same issues with the Rose/Finn storyline. Also felt the movie could have probably ended a little bit after Holdo scene. The last 20 minutes or so still makes the movie a bloated mess but the parts I really like about TLJ still outweighs most of the negatives.

read this and was all wait did Ridley Scott die or something???

Good rankings but I'd move both Prometheus and Matchstick Men up a category or two. Also Hannibal is misunderstood, it's a very black comedy and is a very good movie.

I thought Blade Runner was boring af but I understand I'm outside the mainstream there.

Also, I really like A Good Year, it's the sort of sentimental film I'm a sucker for. Didn't even realize Scott directed it until I saw it on the list.

I thought Alien was a horror movie that just happened to take place in space?
02-11-2018 , 12:40 PM
it's still a sci-fi movie even if it's also a horror movie. They're not mutually exclusive.

I never thought Kingdom of Heaven was that well regarded but apparently the directors cut was good?

Him and Crowe had quite the run together in the 2000's.

Definitely makes my top 5 favourite director list OAT.

I'm not even sure Ridley is top 5 working director. Just off the top of my head linklater, Lynch, fincher, Anderson, and Aronofsky. And then there are guys like Nolan that aren't very popular here that I would still put over RS

He's not... specially with the latest few outings.
Not even top 20 of all time. He still makes enjoyable movies.

Just a personal preference; he's made several of my favourite films ever.

Made me chuckle.

Any filmmaker who can count Blade Runner and Alien in his ouvre has nothing to feel ashamed about. Two of the best movies ever made.

My gf tells me I love lists and ranking things so what you guys are doing naturally appeals to me (also really respect both Dom’s and Dark Knight’s opinions). How about Mann and Tarantino? I’m a sucker for Mann films and everyone seems to have diff opinions on Tarantino’s films

In b4 someone who actually hates Tarantino claims Jackie Brown is his best film.
02-11-2018 , 10:34 PM
I have mixed opinions on Tarantino; Jackie Brown is maybe my second or third favorite Trantino film.
02-11-2018 , 10:39 PM
Jackie Brown's my favorite of his. Definitely don't hate QT though, I like all his movies a lot.
02-11-2018 , 11:25 PM
I think the recent QT movies have descended into self-parody, but love all his earlier movies. Jackie Brown just delivers so much that's fresh and unexpected. Elmore Leonard plot, Pam Grier with an excellent performance, a very menacing Samuel L. Jackson before he phoned all his roles in, De Neiro cast completely out of type as a ****up pothead. Also, it's a Tarantino love story featuring a middle-aged interracial couple --who saw that coming?
02-11-2018 , 11:49 PM
QT rankings

1) Jackie Brown
2) Django Unchained
3) Pulp Fiction
4) Inglorious Basterds
5) Kill Bill Volume 2
6) Kill Bill Volume 1
7) Reservoir Dogs
8) The Hateful Eight
9) Death Proof

But I liked all of them a lot except for Death Proof, which I only liked.

The Spielberg backlash backlash (the backlash to the previous generation of cinephiles writing him off) has gone way too far in the opposite direction. Film Crit Hulk made a tweet where he lists I believe 14 "masterpieces" of Spielberg's. Just gfy.
