All of those except for Kurt Russell. He did not make Tango & Cash better as an example.

This is just wrong.

Gah, that is spot on.

Ha ha. Kurt Russell in top 5 does astound me. What happened to Steve Buscemi?

And if not Tango & Cash lets go with Tequila Sunrise as a horrible movie not made better by anyone including Kurt.

Yep, Steve Buscemi is a good one.

Here's my non-top 5 but honourable mentions:

John Goodman
Lee Marvin
Keith David
Samuel L Jackson
Malcolm McDowell.

But hey, it's my top 5, do your own one

You may be right, I've never seen that one. I just know every movie I've seen him in, he's improved by being in it.

that is a solid list... I am sure we could all come up with a top ten list.

Morgan Freeman, in a tiny part, was exceptional in Brubaker!

I have a portrait of Sam Rockwell tattooed on my back. Just kidding...or am I? I'm a huge fan. Good call.

EDIT: Although I still didn't like The Way, Way Back.

I might and 3 or 4 of your top 10 will be on it. I really like some of your picks.
Keith David is the most interesting pick even though he likely won't make my top 10.

To this day I hear people comment on how fake the orgy scene is when if fact something nearly identical happens all of the world on a weekly, if not daily basis.
Apologies if I was just being nitty about word choice. I actually had forgotten about the CGI during the orgy scene. It's pretty hilarious to consider they spent tens of thousands of dollars to "correct" an image of people having sex. Especially when you see the two versions side-by-side. The censored version isn't dramatically different, imo.

If you do that is freaking cool.

My list off the top of my head:

Sam Rockwell
Ben Mendelsohn
Rob Corddry (guy is an indie champion)
Richard Jenkins
John Goodman

I think some of the guys mentioned have definitely been in movies where they were miscast and didn't improve it. But impossible to be 100% for those who take lots of roles.

Hard to leave off some of the best actors. Like:
Daniel Day Lewis, Al Pacino, Merryl Streep, Joachim Phoenix

I love the Busemi and J. Nicholson picks. Perfect for the category. (Edit: John Goodman too.)

Others:
Clint Eastwood, Jack Palance?

Some more recent actors:
Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender

What about top actors who disimprove a movie? First actor who comes to mind:
Quentin Tarantino

Good list! I think another guy would be James Garner. He makes everything he is in just a little bit better. And 2 more I like in this respect are Oliver Platt and Bruno Kirby.

Seems like a weird criteria for a list (makes movies better), so I'll just put some often non-leading actors who I think fit:

Max von Sydow
Alan Arkin
Albert Brooks
Bergess Meredith
Sydney Pollack
Morgan Freeman

Ok, going to try to pick some women, not as sure about these though:

Francis McDormand
Patricia Clarkson
Kathy Bates
Catherine Keener
Dianne Wiest

John Malkovich
Bruce Willis
Paul Newman
Vincent Cassel
Billy Bob Thornton
Will Ferrell (I know a lot of people hate him, but the guy never fails to crack me up)

I should point out that he is both hysterical and an excellent dramatic actor. His turns in The Thin Red Line, Magnolia, Hard Eight, Casualties of War, Boogie Nights, Gangs of New York, and even the awful The Perfect Storm were excellent.

Throw in his portrayal of mentally ill man-child Steve Brule and his films Walk Hard and Talladega Nights, and the guy just racks up wins.

Not so much Step Brothers, though, although the movie would be worse without him, I suppose.

Man I really like the perfect storm. I thought the cast was incredible. The story line was pretty original too. I like this movie so much I even watched the extras lol.

Some of the effects were over the top but that's to be expected. Although the scenes between bobby and his gf are def cringeworthy.

If I remember correctly, The Perfect Storm came out right about the time when DVD was being introduced. I think it came with my parents very first DVD player. It was probably one the most intense movies I'd ever seen in my life cuz I was so young. Might be why it sticks out so much in my mind. Good memories though.
