Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I enjoyed 'The Greatest Showman' even more the second time. What a show!

The Post - Have you seen a Spielberg movie before? Have you seen Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep before? Then you largely know what you're getting. It's competently made and the story's well told, although not as dramatic as it's trying to be because it can't quite surmount the problem that we all know how things will end.

Hanks does what we've seen him do so many times; he's reliably noble, driven, likeable, well-intentioned with just a hint of gruffness. Streep isn't all that different - she's less confident, more nervous, but ultimately can be counted on to do the right thing. There performances can't reasonably be faulted but these roles aren't big stretches for either of them.

What is remarkable is that even though Spielberg's been criticised his entire career for excessive sentimentality, he still can't seem to stop himself from drenching his movies in mawkishness. The last 20 minutes of The Post are just nauseatingly awful, hitting you with one horribly contrived scene after another where our heroes pat themselves on the back, heavily accompanied by soaring music. But hey, Steven's one of the richest people in Hollywood, so maybe he knows that general audiences happily lap this treacle up, critics be damned.

Overall felt like Phantom Thread was overly long and and I fell into a lull during certain portions of the movie but it all culminates to one scene that is absolutely masterful which makes most of what happened before it worth it, DDL is amazing as usual and hopefully this isn't his last role because he's the GOAT.

Only PTA could make a movie about dress making interesting and although it was beautifully shot with a ton of attention to detail still kind of feel like it could have been cut by about twenty minutes. Still very good PTA
DDL plays Obama.

you mean you thought it would be one of the worst movies of the last 30 years?

Life

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I found it pretty tense and well executed throughout. Not a big fan of the ending, but overall very enjoyable.

I've been thinking of going a 2nd time. I'm going to try to make a matinee in a theater with a great sound system, and park myself in the middle of the first row and see how I like it down there.

I’m intrigued I haven’t seen AHX since it came out but remember it being pretty good. Why the hate?

It's written so ineptly. The beginning is an ABC afterschool special level of exposition. It relies on the "magical negro" to change our so-called hero. The directing is amateurish and meaningless. Other than the lead performance, there is literally no reason to watch it.

Interesting how big the discrepancy is between the critics’ and audiences’ views on Greatest Showman. If it was just the audience rating on RT that was high that wouldn’t mean much, but posters in this thread and everyone I know who has seen it are being very positive.

It was terrible really

It was boring

Every character was vapid

It had 0 plot

If you want to see this film done right just rewatch Moulin Rouge

Thought I saw The Green Fog (2017) mentioned ITT a few weeks ago but search isn't showing it. It's Guy Maddin and a couple others, experimental film that edits together scenes from numerous San Francisco movies/TV to try to re-create Vertigo. It's a noble experiment that IMO doesn't work. Shots are chosen merely because they have similarities to a Vertigo scene, with little regard for cutting them together in a way that flows or makes sense. For example, the rooftop chase is a relatively random hodgepodge of rooftop chase shots that don't make spatial sense.

Some moments are humorous and the final 10-15 minutes are decent. The overall film is only like 62 minutes, so if you're really into this idea give it a shot, and skip to the end if you're not in a theater and not digging it.

Florence Foster Jenkins OK, I guess. The joke that she can't sing and everyone around her reacts to that was good the first time. Not the 7th or 8th time. Funny bits but all in all just not all that great.

I felt like I needed to balance out the frivolity some so we watched this...

Manchester By The Sea Phenomenal movie with phenomenal acting and phenomenal writing. Just phenomenal.

I have to go cry some more now.

I felt the same way about Manchester by the Sea. People all around us are affected by so much that we don't or can't see. And somehow we survive and even prosper.

haha.....I've got exactly the opposite view and thought Moulin Rouge unwatchable.

Moulin Rouge is awesome, really the only Baz movie besides his first one that is worth watching. Haven’t seen The Showman, but the trailer was one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

I don't disagree. Still, pretty shocked that Cell Block 99 has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I saw the Baz Romeo & Juliet last year and it was aight

I feel Moulin Rouge has soul.

The greatest thing.....

Where a week later I can’t tell you the name of any secondary characters or the names of any of the songs.

To each their own

Jzo, I thought the trailer went on for too long! Figured there was no way I'd see that movie despite ddl being in it but your post has changed my mind.

Clovis, same boat. Saw it in high school and thought it was fine.

I thought Bamboozled was a great musical. I was going to see it a second time, but it disappeared after a week at the local art house. I've got really strange taste in movies...

It's certainly varied. It's refreshing to see you posting about some movies I never even knew existed. Also the way you review is too much fun to read.

I don’t agree. I thought it was an abomination. Shakedown did not deserve the Baz Jazz hands treatment.

Moulin Rouge is excellent. Strictly Ballroom is good. Gatsby is meh. Australia is bad. Romeo and Juliet is a truly awful film. I wrote a review of it years ago for the lounge explains why.

Something to look forward to! Anything would be better than the original.
