I watched American Sniper last night, pretty good. Man, Bradley Cooper really bulked up for that! I like him, one of my favorites of the newer movie stars.

Watched Mudbound on Netflix. Really, really average. Felt like a made-for-TV movie... slow-moving and poorly written. The voiceovers jumped from character to character and were confusing and added little to the drama. Acting was OK, Mary J. Blige as supporting actress nominee is a mystery to me, she had like 5 lines and none of them were particularly memorable. All in all I would not recommend it.

I lasted for about 25-30 minutes before I had to turn it off as I was seriously bored.

Re: Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Just watched What Happened to Monday on Netflix which I believe was a Netflix original. I enjoyed it and its the kind of the type of movie I usually don't care for. It's about a dystopian future with massive overpopulation and food shortages. My interest never waivered and found it interesting and well done.

JohnCole....apparently Guy Maddin has made some kind of experimental collage having to do with Vertigo....

I'm dying to see it:

Re: Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

The Player (Altman 1992) - I was looking forward to revisiting this. Tim Robbins plays a Hollywood exec. There's studio palace intrigue, Hollywood parties and restaurants, numerous cameos, movie pitches, and a film-within-the-film. All of that is pretty strong and great and funny. It's densely shot - there are sometimes multiple conversations happening at once (main characters dining at one table while an interesting/important cameo is happening at a table behind them), and it works to give it a fast-paced feeling that approximates what we imagine modern Hollywood to be.

However there's also the main plot (I guess you could call it that) involving a dangerous stalker, and this entire spine of the movie is unfortunately not great. I found myself becoming bored during long scenes that focused on that storyline.

It is a highly recommended watch for almost all of you despite the fact that it falls short of greatness (unless you hate "Hollywood insider" type films).

I love The Player and revisit it often! But the whole writer arc is not that interesting, you're right. It's just a McGuffin.

Two films I watched this week that had critical success:

The Wailing - Korean horror/black comedy/family drams/whatever the hell else it is?? Was interesting, but I could not get over the strange genre shifts. Hard to get scared or get into the tension when half the movie is a goofy guy going into hysterics over everything. Just didn't do it for me. The end was stylish, though.

Good Time - indie fave of last year starring Robert Pattinson about a few dumb lowlifes making horrible decisions and getting chased by cops. The filmmakers obviously know what they're doing cinematically, but they need to work on writing interesting, relatable characters. Bored me to tears.

Finally got around to watching The Big Sick Wonderful! Loved it. Smart writing. Clever dialogue. Great acting. Holly Hunter is fantastic. Just great.

I didn't care for either movie for mostly the same reasons you mentioned. I couldn't figure out what kind of movie The Wailing was trying to be. Good Time was all style and no substance. I thought it started out ok, but it ran out of steam quickly and I ended up not liking it.

Why should lowlifes be relatable? I thought this was more a glimpse into the dysfunctional under world than an attempt to show the dark side that everyone has.

I’m surprised you found the characters uninteresting and boring. I thought Pattinson was a psycho and I found his unpredictability gripping. The “friend’s” backstory was very well written I thought: very funny explanation for his circumstance and his actions always made sense.

I'm just not interested in dumbasses doing dumbass things, I guess. Pattinson was fine, I just didn't care one bit.

Man, that sounds like a real bad idea. Tarantino should be doing something based on a real life like that. Unless he plays it straight....which wouldn't be a Tarantino movie...

I don't like The Rock. I somewhat dislike Marky Mark. And I hate Michael Bay. But Pain and Gain wasn't bad.

I'm not trying to say it was great. I had low expectations. Maybe you were expecting too much.

Infinity Chamber http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3839880/

Not a bad low budget futurisitic drama about a guy who wakes up in an automated max security prison and has to try to outsmart a computer to escape.
Slow paced with a few minor nitpicks but overall an engaging drama.

I saw Good Time a few months ago and really didn't think enough of it either way to write anything. I guess it's a thumb down.
