Just finished it. Yeah it's bad. The world building could have been cool. Instead you get lazy D&D stereotypes.

Re: Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

Watched Shape Of Water and really liked it. It reminded of La La Land in how it's inspired by a certain era of cinema and how whimsical and delightful it is except this is about a fish guy and a mute girl and La La Land was much more of a traditional love story.Sally Hawkins is fantastic as Elisa, and even though I said Frances McDormand was a lock for best actress a few weeks ago but I'm not so sure now because I think Hawkins' performance was probably my favorite all year. The rest of the cast is great as well, especially Michael Shannon who is basically reprising his menacing god-fearing fed role from Boardwalk Empire.

My only complaint about the movie is that I don't really care much about Fish man. He has zero personality and there's not much about him that's interesting, In the end I don't think that matters much because the movie is about Hawkins' character and she could have fallen in love with a piece of wood and it would have been just as moving.

Got tickets for Lawrence of Arabia tonight at the Egyptian! Last year I was too late and it was sold out. This year it seems to be running for a couple weeks. I've never seen it. I hope my expectations aren't too high.

The storyline isnt as compelling as La La Land and its definitely more of an entertaining movie rather than anything thought provoking/oscar-hunting.

7/10
I just saw The Greatest Showman and I'd give it half of the Oscars right now. One of the best movies I've seen in years and I don't normally care for musicals.

Enjoy the spectacle! It's a little too long, but always great.

The Disaster Artist

James Franco: Played by Dennis Hopper in his greatest role.

Dennis Hopper's Brother: Play by Tom Cruise impersonator, David Franco.

Tom Cruise's friend Tommy: Played, of course, by James Franco, the Star of both movies.

Melanie Griffith and Sharon Stone: Hollywood eye candy.

Coneheads, from France? Nah, Nah Oluns...

Be the best: On Tommy's planet.

I did not: Hit her.

Do it like Shakespeare: but sexy.

Malcolm in the Middle: check.

This is a fun flick. Check it out.

Seeing this flick in no way obligates you to see The Room. I advise you to give it a pass. Instead, feel free to watch this:

War of the Garantuas and Destroy all Monsters for Christmas morning!

WIN!

War of the Gargantuas (Frankenstein returns) is one of the greatest practical special effects movies ever made... the models and fight action are quite spectacular. it's a classic good versus evil story within one family... and evil wins (or at least lives to escape)

Pitch perfect 3: you either like these movies or you donít. I love them. It was better than number 2, highly entertaining and medium cringeworthy.

As a single straight middle age man, I am surprised how much I liked the first two.

I wanna see the third, but don't wanna be known as "that guy" and end up on a list somewhere.

The Greatest Showman

Killer opening: check.

Real dancers: check.

P.T Barnum: Wolverine, dancing and singing.

Freaks: wanted.

Jenny Lind: Pop star.

Young love: Nothing like junior high rope drills.

Freak Flags: Flying.

Pompadours: Poised for a big resurgence.

Model trains: And CGI elephants.

Maybe the best thing I've seen in a long time. Check it out.

I thought it was the worst of the 3 but still entertaining. Like you said, you either like them or you donít, and if you like them you will enjoy 3.

Curse of the Golden Flower (2006)

I was not aware Gong Li retired after this movie. She was still ravishing in this role at 40 and still looks amazing for her age today. In general, the acting in the film was very strong. Chow Yun-fat is good in everything he plays, although his character wasn't developed much as written.

Overall, the production quality was very high, but the execution of the plot was nonsensical. There was a good story in this movie somewhere, and you see it at times, but the film was really lacking intimate touches and lost itself in the familiar Chinese weave of over-the-top plot twists and complex betrayals. Still, decent to watch if you're a film snob and want to leer at extravagant cinematography.

Ideas for Gong Li / Zhang Yimou films to watch or re-watch soon:

Ju Dou
Raise the Red Lantern
Farewell My Concubine
Shanghai Triad

Didn't know she had retired, either. Easily one of the most beautiful movie stars ever

Just saw it and enjoyed. I love these movies so if you like the first 2 this is more of the same very entertaining mix. Not sure if there will be a 4 but I'll go if there is.

Re: Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I got to see her on the big screen last summer in 2046. I realize that this argument has been beaten to death, but some of these actors/movies take on a completely new life in a real movie theater. Gong Li is stunning in more ways than one.

I have this... it's good given the era of film.

I just bought the new 4k uhd version of the dark knight... it's spectacular on oled.
