Unfortunately no. The VIFF twitter account and FB account gives away tickets once in a while.

Saw Therese tonight. It's well done but nothing special. Elizabeth Olsen is really good as she is in everything. I discussed with someone who has read the novel and his opinion was that the adaptation was really good and the few changes that were made make the story stronger. So if you like the novel, period pieces or Elizabeth Olsen then check it out.

Just saw Gangs of New York again, no idea why people rate it badly amongst Scorsese films, I know it's not the best, but it's one of my personal favourites (along with Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Cape Fear) and-I know I might get lynched for this-I liked it more than The Departed, which I found poor in comparison.

I like GONY better than the Departed too.

Speaking of Vin Diesel, has anyone seen Knockaround Guys? Thought he was great in it.

While Gangs of New York is better than The Departed, so is Shakes The Clown, so, well, you know.

GONY is pretty bad, but it's hard to say it's not entertaining. Cameron Diaz is terrible, and there is some serious schmaltz throughout. It was the first of Scorcese's films that had me saying he was obviously slipping.

On the other hand, he can do whatever he likes because of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Period.

Gony is the suck... I just can not make it anywhere close to "thru" that movie.

Haha, I just watched the most amusing movie review I've ever seen:

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/vid...musical-review

A musical review of the movie 'Les Miserables'. I particularly liked the guy in the Captain Crunch hat who parodied Russell Crowe.

If we did a highest expectation/biggest disappointment movie draft Gangs Of New York would be my first pick.

Nostalgia critic is great, funny but usually spot-on. And I'm really surprised by all the dislike for GONY. Anyway, watched a good Robin Williams drama called Awakenings (1990) today. Heart-warming stuff, even if schmaltzy and predictable and 2D in places, but it's based on a true story and has some great acting from Robert De Niro, who at this point must be one of the GOAT actors. 3.5/5

Dom Hemingway is a fun film. Jude Law plays an extremely vulgar safecracker who has just gotten out of prison. There are lots of funny moments and exchanges but the little plot they attempt is the weakest parts of the movie.

I can't say I had HUGE expectations or anything, but I was hopeful enough that I went to the significant effort to see the midnight opening of Star Wars Episode I.

Also, (and sort of hate to say it since I love Kubrick) Eyes Wide Shut.

Eyes Wide Shut is a great film.

Give Eyes Wide Shut a second viewing if you've only seen it once and didn't like it.

The reaction to EWS was so typically and puritanically American with people who have never had sex, other than in the missionary position, arguing the film was fake when in fact it's basically a documentary of a rather common subset of sexuality. It's also a very subtle and realistic examination of sexual fidelity in the modern era.
09-15-2013 , 09:53 AM
Nice comments Clovis. Just bought the bluray. Bring on the uncensored goodness.
09-15-2013 , 10:02 AM
C'mon I've never been to an orgy that's anything like the EWS one.
09-15-2013 , 10:25 AM
Another way of looking at it is that they've never let you in. Pun intended.

EWS is great - except for the ridiculous orgy silliness. and the scene with Cruise and Pollack towards the end. It's damn flawed but I can't take my eyes off of it.
09-15-2013 , 02:54 PM
Pollack is great in the film. Cruise and Kidman are bad. imo. The lack of goodness (it's not terrible) of the film has nothing to do with the fact that it's not puritanical.

I saw it when it came out and I watched it again for the second time just a few months ago.

Billionaire orgies are a common subset of sexuality?

Pollack is so good I should try to see more stuff that he acted in.

The Player? Haven't seen it.
Husbands and Wives? - saw it when it came out, don't really remember it that well.

As far as movies he's directed: They Shoot Horses Don't They?

Bad Words is Jason Bateman's first film as a director. He's also the lead as a 40 year old man who enters a children's national spelling bee. The film is really funny. Bateman goes to some pretty extreme lengths to beat some of these kids. Some of the jokes may not hold up once you get over the kind of shock of a grown man saying the things he does to little kids but it definitely got plenty of laughs on the first viewing.

Gravity. Wow. The film is gorgeous. The 3D was perfect. This is a movie where seeing it in a theatre is only going to enhance the experience. It's definitely the best film I saw at the the festival (although I didn't see 12 Years A Slave). Cuaron does a great job building suspense throughout. I'm going to leave this post spoiler free but if there's anything people want to know I'll answer in spoiler tags below.

Poly, triads, multiple partners and swinging are increasingly common. Ten seconds of googling will show that you can be invited to a similar orgy if you are willing to travel and pay
