I somewhat agree with the previous poster. They hadn't shown any knack for being able to take their restaurant to what it became, and their "idea" was hardly a patentable one. If Ray Kroc never walks through that door, it's far from clear that they end up with anything other than a popular local burger joint and a comfortable life.
They also didn't seem to show any compassion or fairness when Kroc had done some amazing work and asked for a renegotiation of the terms of their contract - at that point, their position was "we have a contract, suck it", so it's hard to be too sympathetic.
Finally, as was shown in the movie (and proven in many case studies of McDonalds) - the value of the corporation is not in the fast delivery system or the hamburgers. It's in the real estate, and this is something they had no inkling of.
I think they did well for themselves - came up with one idea ahead of it's time, and someone with real vision took it to the stratosphere, and they ended up set for life.
