That's the story of most movie sequels though, which is why most sequels are so bad.
I quite liked Reloaded. Revolutions is completely unwatchable, though. I like to pretend that the proper order is The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded, The Thirteenth Floor.

The Prestige

Still one of my top-5 all time, and every time I watch it though it seems like there's a new detail to notice. Very impressed with the improvements Nolan made over the book. I figured this one might drop for me over time but it hasn't. Highly recommended if there's anyone left here who hasn't seen it.

Black Dynamite

This was surprisingly enjoyable. It came on HBO and I couldn't change the channel. At first I thought it was an honest 70s blaxploitation movie for a couple minutes until the comedy kicked in and I recognized an actor.

Film Crit Hulk wrote a really good analysis of Nolan's career and perspective as a film maker today. Thought it would be interesting to people here.

Watched Passenger last night. I enjoyed it, thought the reviews were a little harsh. My roommate keeps watching it, kind of obsessed. It wasn't that good.

I feel inclined to write a long form review of this piece. It's a pure and simple drama that hits the correct pacing, all the correct notes, and unlike so many movies we are used to seeing.... well, see it yourself, it's a neat little package.

Definitely worth the award in nearly any year for that category (or standard Best Picture, to be honest).

Eh, maybe a true filmy can do this better justice than I.
This movie might have the best final scene surprise payoff of all time. It is so simple, yet so unexpected... such a powerful, emotional scene.

Dunkirk 4/10

Spoiler:

First major critique is the score. I understand it was meant to feel unnerving and unsettling but it is brutal. I felt like i was being tortured into having a heart attack. I don't need to actually feel like im at war to get a good experience, it is monotonous and relentless. You get huge 3 minute+ segments of nothing but a droning alarm sound blasted in your ears. I was actually considering leaving due to it, and if the 3rd act didn't seriously pick up the quality and keep me invested, I may well have done so.

The intentional jumping of time plot seems to be there purely to be a cool quirk. Not sure it adds anything but unnecessary confusion. Since you are telling a story of survival for the men on the beach, really would have liked to see the film play out in a much more linear format. Actually staying on the beach for the first 50 minutes so you can appreciate the length of their struggle, before introducing the boats, then bring in Tom Hardy with 30 minutes to go. You suddenly feel emotion for the characters due to spending time with them and learning how hard it is, and I feel Cilian Murphy's character being fleshed out a bit before we see him on the boat later on would add a lot. Did anyone care about his character at all?

Agree a lot with what Clovis said about how the film is the same 3 scenes on repeat. Every Tom hardy scene is the same, the cuts to the boat where we can have another discussion about ptsd played out quickly, and each beach scene being, we escaped, oh no actually we didn't got repetitive. 'The land' was clear best part of the story and I liked it a lot, but the scenes really picked up when the characters started talking to each other in the boat on the beach. Maybe would have been nice to use words to add tension in other scenes too?

Last critique is the terrible Tom Hardy end bit. How long to we have to watch him glide for? and then the extended omg will he wont he of the landing gear. Why has such a cheesy thing been put in out of the blue? Plus it ultimately doesn't matter if his gear comes out or not, because noone cares about his character, and he is ****ed whether he lands or not based on where he is landing.

Overall the film looks beautiful and is a great piece of film making. Its just the sound is awful and the film tries to do cool stuff just to be quirky to its detriment. Ultimately though, I think it's just boring. Shame because the story is one I didn't even know of, and seems like a great story. Maybe if the film had been handed to someone to just let the story do the work instead of trying to jazz it up, it would have worked better.

I wonder if Christopher Nolan hasn't seen Tom Hardy's other work. That might explain why he has, once again, utterly wasted a great character actor. What is the point of casting Hardy if you're going to put a performance-killing mask on him?

Dunkirk was a unique film experience for me in that I've never had a movie totally ruined by its own soundtrack. Garbage film, don't bother seeing it.

Leaving the theatre from Dunkirk now. It was phenomenal.

Just saw Atomic Blonde, I don't really know how I feel about it.

Spoiler:
Pros:
-Theron was great, she was very believable in her role.
-A lot of exciting action including one of the best extended action sequences I've seen in awhile. Really impressive all around 10 minutes or so.
-Storyline kept your attention throughout. It was deceptive but didn't feel contrived first time through.

-Aside from Theron, you left the theater really feeling like you didn't know the characters at all. This can be fine, but in a movie with twists and turns like this, I think it's important to at least have a feel for why people act the way they do. That wasn't the case here.
-I don't know for sure about this, but I think it may have been too clever for its own good. I'll have to rewatch, but I'm not sure the final twist will hold up watching the movie knowing her true motive the entire time.

I definitely was entertained, and I think it was undoubtedly a solid action movie. I'd be interested in others thoughts on it overall though.

I understand not liking Dunkirk, but I'm perplexed at people complaining about the soundtrack. What was wrong with it? I thought it worked wonderfully. Probably my favorite part of the film.

It was so LOUD then when you thought it couldn't get louder it got louder. Also it consisted of entirely annoying random chimes and droning sounds. It was oppressive. It felt like I was at Guantanamo and being subjected to audio torture.

It may have been less oppressive in a normal theatre.

Watched John Wick, Chapter 2.

Pretty much a perfect "turn off your brain, and get entertained" type of film, just like the first one.

Very stylish violence, which may be troubling to some,it becomes comic bookish, you start to be numb to all the blood splatter.

Just watched it to prep for Atomic Blonde.

Was not disappointed

I also had trouble hearing some of the dialogue in Dunkirk (Imax screening). Even positive reviews have commented on this.

Enjoyed The Big Sick. Lots of laughs and some good heartfelt moments. That line posted earlier had me laughing for a good two minutes.

Think the two main characters didn't have very good chemistry but then again they weren't dating long so idk.

War for the planet of the apes was pretty weak. Nothing really stood out as particularly good or bad. A bit heavy handed at times. On the whole pretty forgettable. I think it's a shame too because I really enjoyed the first two installments.

It's just manipulative, monotonous, nonstop trilling/thumping/ticking for two hours and it never lets up, even in scenes where it's wildly inappropriate. Like, the old guy is unloading his ship back in England or Kenneth Branagh is chatting with his officers and the soundtrack's telling me there's a serial killer about to attack them all. Basically it's like if Jaws had the Jaws theme going for the entire film.

There's also the issue of volume, and idk if it's just the IMAX cinema I went to, but holy **** that was painful to sit through without earplugs.

Same. They just ran out of ideas and kept calling back to the previous films. It's a shame because they could have just made it an excellent two-part sci-fi series, but they just had to make it a trilogy.
