Hard to believe Scorsese will make a dud with this Joker film, but DC comics movies are just so bad. This is like an unstoppable force vs. an immovable object.

Anyway, they should have rolled the dice and let Tommy Wiseau be the joker. Introduce a little anarchy for real.

Just saw Annihilation. New movie by Alex Garland who did Ex Machina. I enjoyed it. It is very weird, beautifully shot, and a bit haunting. Like Ex Machina I think it's going to be really enjoyable to read about and discuss the movie afterwards. It's probably best to know as little as possible going in. I don't think it delivers quite as well as Ex Machina but that was one of the best movies of the past couple years so not too much of a criticism.

The Cloverfield Paradox A horror drama about scientists on a spaceship doing science-y stuff and bad things happen. Mediocre and cliched, especially compared to the two previous Cloverfield movies which were good.

Lady Bird - It's ok. Feels like a bunch of those teenage girl indie dramedies we got in the early-mid '90s (well, maybe there were like 2 big ones), and there's nothing new here. But it's decent and that's more than I can say about several other nominees.

My rankings so far:

Get Out
[Florida Project]
[your name]
Lady Bird (tied)
[Battle of the Sexes] (tied)
Three Billboards
Dunkirk
The Shape of Water

78/52 - Documentary focusing on the shower scene in Psycho. If you enjoy watching movie scenes get dissected, film people talking filmy things, or even just Psycho/Hitchcock in general, then this will probably be right up your alley.

I thought that a 90min doc dedicated almost entirely to one scene would probably outstay its welcome, but honestly, I could have watched more.

Streaming on Netflix.

Phantom thread was pretty great Imo.

Sounds like something I want to see but Netflix streaming doesn't have it.

Oh, sorry. It's on Australian Netflix, so I just assumed it was on US Netflix, too. Actually, I thought it was a Netflix original, but obviously it's not.

I'm not sure if it's streaming on a different service in USA, but if you can find it, it's well worth watching.

Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis

I had never heard of this band until the attack in Paris, and I’d never heard their music until seeing this documentary. I am now a huge fan.

This is one of the most spiritually uplifting films I have ever seen. It should be called ”terrorism will never win”. It is also one of the best depictions of male friendship ever caught on film.

A truly human film. A masterpiece.

Grade: A+

My buddy met Josh Homme at a Nordstrom rack store in Chicago a while back. We’ve been listening to Queens of the Stone Age for approximately forever. He’s kind of notorious for being a dick but he was cool in this case, maybe because my friend’s little brother was with him (only reason he asked for a picture).

Jesse Hughes the lead singer of EODM and the only member who stays in the group (other members rotate cause they are in other bands), seems to be traumatized by this event and has been made persona non grata at the venue where the attack occurred.

Evidently he hasn't dealt with it or maybe hasn't processed it productively.

But TBH, that's kinda hard to deal with.

I'm no fan of EODM, they seem to be a wannabe The Darkness or Steel Panther.

Still sucks what they went through.

Review later, but this Allison Janney line from I, Tonya had me rolling:

Well my story line went to ****. What the ****?

Well insults don't come much lower than this lol...I think they're fine for making goofy throwaway rock songs. Just like QOTSA, they're full of swagger and cool songs but don't produce anything that will be remembered for very long. Songs for the Deaf as a whole was a very good rock album, great drum work by Grohl.

I've read some mixed things (mostly interesting) about The Mephisto Waltz. It's not on Netflix or Amazon or any place streaming, so I'm probably going to get the blu-ray.

Has anyone seen it? Any thoughts?

I think we should add QT's writing credits to his list when ranking: True Romance, Natural Born Killers, and From Dusk Til Dawn

True Romance I remember liking a lot. Should probably rewatch.
02-16-2018 , 01:20 AM
True Romance has one of my favorite scores. This theme set the mood for the whole film.

It was written by Hans Zimmer, who apparently had some talent before he devoted his career to blowing out his patron's eardrums with rando BRAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Phantom Thread - very good and now in the running for my Best Picture.

It's in danger of being fully rich white tortured genius nonsense, but what flips it for me especially is the

hilarious, kinky, non-standard resolution to the relationship

now speaking of great scores, most of you guys probably haven't seen The Taking of Pelham 123. Not the 2009 remake but the terrific original, which not only is a terrific action-heist-thriller movie but has one of the most original and innovative scores of all time. Written by David Shire, first husband of Talia Shire (Godfather, Rocky). It's an experimental -- for film music anyway -- and exhilarating 12 tone score that does a great job of setting a frenetic and funky and chaotic mood for the film.

10/10, would watch again

02-16-2018 , 03:09 AM
There is no movie I enjoy rewatching more and while from a critical perspective I might think of a number of different films as better, I have no problem admitting that True Romance is my favorite movie.

Love that soundtrack too!
